Book More Brown County Stories

Download or read book More Brown County Stories written by George Monroe and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2006-12-21 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to share some of the fun and interesting things that happened when I was growing up in Brown County. The stories offered here were told to my five daughters around campfires and at many bedtime sessions as they were growing up. They requested that I tell them over and over again. They heard these stories, and many others like them, so many times they said they felt like they actually grew up with Cobweb, and Virgil, and Hazel, and Sis, and Bobby, and Stretch. After many retellings I was once obliged to let my youngest daughter know that I had told her everything I could remember, or even make up. To which she replied, “OK then, just start over.” The various accounts of these uncommon experiences were reinforced for my daughters when they visited their grandmother who lived in Nashville, the County Seat of Brown County, and were able to explore the territory where they took place. All of these stories are based on things that actually happened to me and other live people in the good old days in Brown County. They are as true as creative memory will allow.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 About The Book Still More Brown County Stories Recollections and Collected Tales The purpose of this book, like the two previous volumes of Brown County Stories, is to share some of the fun and interesting things that happened when I lived in Brown County. Most of the stories were told to my five daughters around campfires and at many bedtime sessions as they were growing up. After several years of story times I was once obliged to let my youngest daughter, Abby Monroe, know that I had told her everything I could remember or even make up. Her response was, “OK, just start over.” The various accounts of these uncommon experiences were reinforced for Abby and her older sisters as they visited their grandmother in Nashville, the County Seat of Brown County. From that base, they were able to explore the territory where the stories took place. This volume includes some stories that were recently shared with me by friends who felt they would help to illustrate what Brown County was like in the good old days. They are as true as creative memories have allowed. They also provide additional support for the maxim that truth is often stranger than fiction

Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In his first collection of short stories John Grisham takes us back to Ford County, Mississippi, the setting of his first novel, A Time to Kill. This riveting collection of short stories features an unforgettable cast of characters: Wheelchair-bound Inez Graney and her two older sons embark on a bizarre road trip through the Mississippi Delta to visit Inez’s youngest son, Raymond—on death row. A hard-drinking, low-grossing divorce lawyer fed up with his wife, his life, and the law plans a drastic escape after an unexpected phone call. A quiet, unassuming data collector sets out to bring down a flashy casino owner with his skill at blackjack—as payback for the theft of his wife. A stalker hunts victims in a retirement home, a lawyer confronts a vengeful adversary from the past, and a young man from a prominent family is driven off by scandal and fear—but finds unexpected redemption on the wrong side of the tracks. Often hilarious, frequently moving, and always entertaining, this collection makes it abundantly clear why John Grisham is our most popular storyteller. Don’t miss John Grisham’s new book, THE EXCHANGE: AFTER THE FIRM!

Book Creativity Inc The Expanded Edition

Download or read book Creativity Inc The Expanded Edition written by Ed Catmull and published by Random House. This book was released on 2023-09-28 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The co-founder and longtime president of Pixar updates and expands his 2014 New York Times bestseller on creative leadership, reflecting on the management principles that built Pixar’s singularly successful culture, and on all he learned during the past nine years that allowed Pixar to retain its creative culture while continuing to evolve. “Might be the most thoughtful management book ever.”—Fast Company For nearly thirty years, Pixar has dominated the world of animation, producing such beloved films as the Toy Story trilogy, Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Up, and WALL-E, which have gone on to set box-office records and garner eighteen Academy Awards. The joyous storytelling, the inventive plots, the emotional authenticity: In some ways, Pixar movies are an object lesson in what creativity really is. Here, Catmull reveals the ideals and techniques that have made Pixar so widely admired—and so profitable. As a young man, Ed Catmull had a dream: to make the first computer-animated movie. He nurtured that dream as a Ph.D. student, and then forged a partnership with George Lucas that led, indirectly, to his founding Pixar with Steve Jobs and John Lasseter in 1986. Nine years later, Toy Story was released, changing animation forever. The essential ingredient in that movie’s success—and in the twenty-five movies that followed—was the unique environment that Catmull and his colleagues built at Pixar, based on philosophies that protect the creative process and defy convention, such as: • Give a good idea to a mediocre team and they will screw it up. But give a mediocre idea to a great team and they will either fix it or come up with something better. • It’s not the manager’s job to prevent risks. It’s the manager’s job to make it safe for others to take them. • The cost of preventing errors is often far greater than the cost of fixing them. • A company’s communication structure should not mirror its organizational structure. Everybody should be able to talk to anybody. Creativity, Inc. has been significantly expanded to illuminate the continuing development of the unique culture at Pixar. It features a new introduction, two entirely new chapters, four new chapter postscripts, and changes and updates throughout. Pursuing excellence isn’t a one-off assignment but an ongoing, day-in, day-out, full-time job. And Creativity, Inc. explores how it is done.

Download or read book Human Migration written by J. J. Mangalam and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this guide to the literature on human migration, J.J. Mangalam indexes over 2,000 titles that appeared in English from 1955 through 1962. An important feature of this work is the annotation of nearly 400 major articles on migration. These annotations provide information on the main focus of the study, the hypotheses tested, and any special measuring devices employed. The conclusions are also given, using the authors' words whenever possible. To facilitate the use of this guide the author has compiled an index that lists not only the subjects treated but also the major variables used in each abstracted study; thus the researcher who is interested in the use of certain variables can easily refer to the previous investigation of the influence of these factors upon migration. In a comprehensive introduction, Mangalam surveys the current state of studies of human migration and suggests a theoretical framework by which the vast amount of existing facts from different migration studies can be integrated and given meaning.

Book excerpt: On August 30, 1993, Roberta Moore drove to work; it was a cold, rainy morning. She had left her two sons and little daughter at home with her husband. He was supposed to make sure they got dressed in time to catch the school bus. She had been on the job for only thirty minutes when she received a call at 7:45 a.m. Roberta was surprised to hear her husband's voice on the line. John Moore told his wife he couldn't find their sons. Robert, 13, and Benjamin (Ben), 10, were missing. At 8:25 a.m. the dispatcher with the Price County Sheriff's Department answered a 911 call. Roberta said her husband had found their sons dead on a trail near their home. Brothers Silenced unmasks the dysfunctional personal lives of this seemingly normal family. This shocking real life mystery proves truth is indeed stranger than fiction. Author Kathryn Jewel, spent over a year interviewing Roberta Moore and uncovering the many complex elements surrounding this case. The ensuing finger pointing, inconsistencies, and religious obsession are explored in detail. Because of small town politics and petty jealousy within the sheriff's department, critical mistakes were made. Fans of the true crime genre will be both challenged and baffled as they are led through this psychological maze. Brothers Silenced analyzes the twists and turns of how and why two innocent children were shot to death and left in the woods so close to their home.
