Book The Mad Math Manual

Download or read book The Mad Math Manual written by Ahmad W. Chamoun and published by Ahmad W. Chamoun. This book was released on 2022-07-20 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After studying and teaching math and science over the years I realized that many good opportunities for learning and teaching important and essential things were missing from the resources that were available. Included in this book are many exercises, techniques and insights that strengthen a learner’s mathematical and logical abilities which are simply not to be found anywhere else. Also included are things which I have learned from different, disparate places that, for the student’s convenience, have all been gathered into one place and which I attempted to explain in simpler terms than what is currently available. Afterall, it is hard enough to learn these concepts let alone have to shift through all of the data to find what really pertains to one’s study. Some of the material presented are things which I myself found to be the most confusing. In this regard I hope that the manual can be a great resource for students trying to learn more about math and science as well as the workings of nature. Even though it is unlikely a reader will be able to understand all of the material presented on their own and without the presence of a teacher, having another resource in which the material and concepts are presented in a unique and simpler way is highly useful. Generally, when people learn about math and science, they are usually not satisfied by the answer that their teacher or textbook has to give on why nature settled on a certain constant or equation. It’s mind boggling to me how many people fail to acknowledge the relatedness of many physical constants as well as the logic behind some of the greatest discoveries, and in effect are missing out on a lot of the beauty behind science and the workings of nature.

Book Mathematics for Human Flourishing

Download or read book Mathematics for Human Flourishing written by Francis Su and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2020-01-07 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The ancient Greeks argued that the best life was filled with beauty, truth, justice, play and love. The mathematician Francis Su knows just where to find them."--Kevin Hartnett, Quanta Magazine" This is perhaps the most important mathematics book of our time. Francis Su shows mathematics is an experience of the mind and, most important, of the heart."--James Tanton, Global Math Project For mathematician Francis Su, a society without mathematical affection is like a city without concerts, parks, or museums. To miss out on mathematics is to live without experiencing some of humanity's most beautiful ideas. In this profound book, written for a wide audience but especially for those disenchanted by their past experiences, an award-winning mathematician and educator weaves parables, puzzles, and personal reflections to show how mathematics meets basic human desires--such as for play, beauty, freedom, justice, and love--and cultivates virtues essential for human flourishing. These desires and virtues, and the stories told here, reveal how mathematics is intimately tied to being human. Some lessons emerge from those who have struggled, including philosopher Simone Weil, whose own mathematical contributions were overshadowed by her brother's, and Christopher Jackson, who discovered mathematics as an inmate in a federal prison. Christopher's letters to the author appear throughout the book and show how this intellectual pursuit can--and must--be open to all.

Book The Book of Perfectly Perilous Math

Download or read book The Book of Perfectly Perilous Math written by Sean Connolly and published by Workman Publishing Company. This book was released on 2017-03-28 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Math rocks! At least it does in the gifted hands of Sean Connolly, who blends middle school math with fantasy to create an exciting adventure in problem-solving. These word problems are perilous, do-or-die scenarios of blood-sucking vampires (How many months would it take a single vampire to completely take over a town of 500,000 people?), or a rowboat of 5 shipwrecked sailors with a single barrel of freshwater (How much can they drink, and for how long, before they go mad from thirst???). Each problem requires readers to dig deep into the tools they’re learning in school to figure out how to survive. Kids will love solving these problems. Sean Connolly knows how to make tough subjects exciting and he brings that same intuitive understanding of what inspires and challenges kids’ curiosity to the 24 problems in The Book of Perfectly Perilous Math. These problems are as fun to read as they are challenging to solve. They test readers on fractions, algebra, geometry, probability, expressions and equations, and more. Use geometry to fill in for the ship’s navigator and make it safely to the New World. Escape an evil Duke’s executioner by picking the right door—probability will save your neck.

Book Math with Bad Drawings

Download or read book Math with Bad Drawings written by Ben Orlin and published by Black Dog & Leventhal. This book was released on 2018-09-18 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A hilarious reeducation in mathematics-full of joy, jokes, and stick figures-that sheds light on the countless practical and wonderful ways that math structures and shapes our world. In Math With Bad Drawings, Ben Orlin reveals to us what math actually is; its myriad uses, its strange symbols, and the wild leaps of logic and faith that define the usually impenetrable work of the mathematician. Truth and knowledge come in multiple forms: colorful drawings, encouraging jokes, and the stories and insights of an empathetic teacher who believes that math should belong to everyone. Orlin shows us how to think like a mathematician by teaching us a brand-new game of tic-tac-toe, how to understand an economic crises by rolling a pair of dice, and the mathematical headache that ensues when attempting to build a spherical Death Star. Every discussion in the book is illustrated with Orlin's trademark "bad drawings," which convey his message and insights with perfect pitch and clarity. With 24 chapters covering topics from the electoral college to human genetics to the reasons not to trust statistics, Math with Bad Drawings is a life-changing book for the math-estranged and math-enamored alike.
