Download or read book No Timber Without Trees written by Duncan Poore and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of the world's tropical timber is still supplied from natural forest, but under current systems of management the forests are rapidly becoming exhausted. Unless management practices change to become genuinely sustainable, neither the forests nor the essential contribution of the timber industry to many economies will survive. Duncan Poore reviews the extent to which natural forests are already being sustainably managed for timber production, and looks at how these practices can be enlarged. He places management for timber in the wider context of tropical forest conservation and outlines a strategy for further action. Thoroughly researched and accessibly written, this book will be useful for everyone working or interested in the subject of tropical forests. Foreword by Dato Dr B.C.Y. Download or read book Preservation of timber in the tropics written by G.W. Findlay and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much research has been done recently, and more is now in progress, to increase the effectiveness under tropical conditions of methods which have been developed in Europe for preserving timber. This book attempts to bring together the results of some of these studies. I have not attempted to cover the tropical zones of Central and South America as this would have extended the book beyond its limits. But I am grateful to the authors who have contributed chapters dealing with the different aspects and solutions of the problems of the tropical areas of the Old World. The International Research Group for Wood Preservation (The I.R.G.) at its annual meetings in different countries has provided a valuable forum for cooperation in this developing field. Anyone concerned with the subject would be well advised to study the publications issued by this group. Their office is at Drottning Kristinas vag 47C S - 11428 Stockholm, Sweden. Although timber is a renewable resource there is every reason why it should not be wasted through premature decay or the ravages of termites etc., when effective measures for its preservation are available and, if correctly applied, can greatly reduce the cost of maintaining timber structures.

Download or read book Commercial Timbers of West Africa written by Edward S. Ayensu and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The xylem anatomy of 28 species of commercially and potentially commercial timbers of West Africa is described together with information pertaining to seasoning qualities, durability and working properties, as well as the uses of wood. A comprehensive discussion on the mechanical properites, establishing the methodologies for evaluating the potential utilization of these woods, has been included. Shrinkage and swelling in wood have always presented problems in the utilization of woods. A discussion relating to the differences among (a) moisture content change and shrinkage, (b) the effect of drying conditions on shrinkage and (c) the variation in shrinkage in different species is presented. To aid both beginning students and to refresh the minds of practicing wood technologists, a glossary of the principal terms used in describing the minute features of timbers has also been added.

Download or read book Silviculture in the Tropics written by Sven Günter and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-06-24 with total page 547 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book integrates the latest global developments in forestry science and practice and their relevance for the sustainable management of tropical forests. The influence of social dimensions on the development of silvicultural concepts is another spotlight. Ecology and silvicultural options form all tropical continents, and forest formations from dry to moist forests and from lowland to mountain forests are covered. Review chapters which guide readers through this complex subject integrate numerous illustrative and quantitative case studies by experts from all over the world. On the basis of a cross-sectional evaluation of the case studies presented, the authors put forward possible silvicultural contributions towards sustainability in a changing world. The book is addressed to a broad readership from forestry and environmental disciplines.
