Book More Hunting Wasps Classic Reprint

Download or read book More Hunting Wasps Classic Reprint written by J. Henri Fabre and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-08 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from More Hunting Wasps The Pompilus has done no digging. It is really an accidental hole with spacious winding passages, the result of the mason's negligence and not of the Wasp's industry. The closing of the cavity is quite as rough and summary. A few crumbs. Of mortar, heaped up before the doorway, form a bar ricade rather than a door. A mighty hunter makes a poor architect. The Tarantula's murderess does not know how to dig a cell for her larva; she does not know how to fill up the entrance by sweeping dust into it. The first hole encountered at the foot of a wall contents her, provided that it be roomy enough; a little heap of rubbish will do for a door. Nothing could be more expeditious. Book excerpt: More Hunting Wasps By Jean-Henri Fabre, 1920 If we consider only the relative strength of the adversaries, the power of their weapons, the virulence of their poisons and their different modes of action, the scale would very often be weighted in favour of the Spider. Since the Pompilus always emerges victorious from this contest, which appears to be full of peril for her, she must have a special method, of which I would fain learn the secret. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Instincts and Habits of the Solitary Wasps S the tendency of mankind to crowd into towns grows stronger the joys of country life and the workings of Nature are more and more excluded from the daily experience of humanity. In a few the primal love of the wild is too strong for suppression, and turning from the hot and noisy streets they find it a refreshment of spirit to meet our little brothers of earth and air in the wider spaces of their own territory. Book Bees and Wasps Classic Reprint

Download or read book Bees and Wasps Classic Reprint written by Oswald H. Latter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bees and Wasps The terms bee and wasp probably do not, except to an entomologist, denote more than a very small assemblage of insects. The honey-bee and perhaps one or two species of bumble-bees on the one hand, and the yellow and black banded insects that cause such consternation at the breakfast table on the other, represent for most of us the sum total of personal acquaintance in this class of animals. It is therefore necessary at the outset to explain the sense in which we are here employing the two words which constitute the title of this little volume. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Synopsis of American Wasps, Vol. 14: Solitary Wasps The book has been in the press several years, in consequence of the great loss of time caused by the transmission of the proofs from Europe to America, and vice versa. In consequence of this long period Of waiting, I have been obliged to make a review of the manuscript in reference to the writings of various entomologists, especially those of Mr. Cresson, which have been published from year to year, and have changed the names of the species which I had described and have adopted the names given by this author. I have not been able, however, to take account of the more recent writings of Mr. Cresson, on the Hymenoptera of Texas, which only came to my knowledge when the printing of this book was almost finished. Book Wasp Studies Afield Classic Reprint

Download or read book Wasp Studies Afield Classic Reprint written by Phil Rau and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wasp Studies Afield The present volume embodies the results of four years of out-of-door study of some of our most interesting and highly developed insects, in their native haunts, while pursuing their occupations in their own way. Biological and behavior work on the American wasps has been, for the most part, desultory and incomplete, and we hope that these chapters may, in their small way, fill the gap that exists. We have no apology to make for the frequent use of anthropomorphic ideas, terms and interpretations. However, one must not read into these terms any subtle metaphysical meaning. They are used as apt descriptive expressions, and not for the purpose of predicating logical thinking to these creatures. This work as a whole is descriptive; the comparative and philosophical, as well as the correlative, data have been reserved for a later volume. Unless otherwise stated, all of the observations were made at St. Louis or within a radius of thirty miles of that city. The sketches for the illustrations were made in the field and executed in their final form by Dr. Gustave Dahms. Pomiformis is much more common and is comparatively indifferent to the nature Of the foundation on which she constructs her cell. She builds on walls, on isolated stones, on the inner wooden surface Of half-closed shutters; or else she adopts an aerial base, the slender twig of a shrub, the withered sprig of a plant Of some sort. Any form Of support serves her purpose. Nor does she trouble about Shelter. Less chilly than her African cousin, she does not shun the un protected spaces exposed to every wind that blows. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Instincts and Habits of the Solitary Wasps The work that has served as a basis for this volume has extended over several years, and has been done in Wisconsin, at the residence of Dr. Charles A. Leuthstrom, to whose forbearance in allowing us to use his gardens as a hunting-ground, we are greatly indebted. The field is a most favorable one since an island in the lake close by, acres of woodland all about, and a farm with two vegetable gardens, one on the top of a hill and one on lower ground, offer a rich variety of nesting places. It is in the lower garden, which is bounded by woods, that the wasps are found in greatest abundance. The study of the solitary wasps was suggested to us by those most interesting and delightful of all entomological papers, the "Souvenirs Entomologiques" of J. H. Fabre, and however widely our conclusions may differ, we have for M. Fabre and for his work, the deepest respect and admiration. We wish to express our indebtedness to Mr. W. H. Ashmead of Washington, for his cordial interest in the work and for his kindness in identifying for us the various species.
