Download or read book The Critics Canon written by Richard Hudson Palmer and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1988-10-19 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Palmer clearly states that his purpose is to explain 1the ways of critics to theatre practitioners, the ways of theatre to inexperienced reviewers, and the dynamic convergence of theatre and critic to anyone interested in theatre.' . . . The work is a well-written `primer' for writers and it will be useful primarily to performers who object to unfavorable `criticsm' without understanding the nature and purpose of reviewing. Accessible to general readers and undergraduates. Choice Palmer begins with an examination of the theatrical review as a medium for informing and entertaining theatregoers, documenting events of artistic of community importance, and supporting theatre through critical evaluation and publicity. He next comments on how journalistic pressures affect reviewers. Citing brief examples from hundreds of reviews, the author devotes a chapter to each of the elements that needs to be covered in a review, including performers, script, direction, music, and choreography, together with stage and lighting design and other physical aspects of the production. The final chapter develops criteria for assessing the strengths and weaknesses of a theatrical review, based on aesthetic standards, the cultural tastes of theatregoers, and the interests of the community. Palmer's experience as both a theatre professional and a journalist gives him an intimate understanding of the antagonism that often develops between reviewers and those who feel themselves to be the target of irresponsible criticism. His book provides a clear perspective on theatrical matters and guidelines that will help to improve standards of reviewing and create an appreciation of the essential relationship between the theatre and its critics.
Download or read book Moving Parts written by Nina Shengold and published by Penguin. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moving Parts offers actors the best monologues from great plays—pieces by both well-known and up-and-coming playwrights, including many minority artists—that offer a variety of dramatic styles for beginning and experienced actors. Included are more than a hundred monologues from such contemporary voices as Eric Bogosian, Caryl Churchill, Christopher Durang, Maria Irene Fornes, Athol Fugard, Philip Kan Gotanda, Václav Havel, Lanford Wilson, and George C. Wolfe. Designed for easy browsing, the monologues are indexed by gender, age, and subject to help actors locate appropriate material, and each is introduced with a short description of the plot, setting, and character type. These monologues stand on their own as good theater, while they give actors a well-defined character, a story to tell, and a wide range of behavior and feeling to portray.

Download or read book Looking for Comfortable Shoes written by Jackie Ganem and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-09-15 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a story about changethe cultural change required of a Lebanese immigrant family new to the United States and the dramatic personal change that comes as the result of a family tragedy. The book is in two parts. Through a series of vignettes, the reader is introduced to a cast of unique characters in an immigrant family. Their stories are amusing and touching. The second part of the book is told in small stories and deals with the complex changes in a family after the attempted suicide and mental illness of the youngest child. The familys world as they knew it stopped. The author changed in such fundamental ways that it is as if she had two lives---one before this tragedy and one after. Her evolution took her from a traditional suburban housewife and mother to that of an ambitious career woman eager to grow and move away from all she had ever known. This is a true story told with great honesty, love, and surprising humor. Jackie Ganems memoir is a sensitive look at growing up in America in a Lebanese immigrant family. Yet, it is so much more. Ganem skillfully documents her own life as she progresses through the roles of a wife in a difficult marriage, a mother learning to relate constructively and compassionately to her troubled daughter, and a devoted partner to her lifelong companion. Ganems prose is evocative and descriptively specific to the remarkable woman who is central to this story. Jane Katims, author of Dancing on a Slippery Floor

Download or read book Boldt written by Ted Lewis and published by Soho Press. This book was released on 2015-03-17 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written at a tough point in his career and heavily influenced by Blaxploitation films and cop movies like Dirty Harry, Ted Lewis’s lone novel set in America is a nasty and brutal look at police corruption in the United States. Roy Boldt is a bad cop. Corrupt. Violent. An extreme racist with a drinking problem. He is a man alone, outside of all the worlds he inhabits, and respected only by those who fear him. Boldt is too proud to bow down to the mob and too wicked to be a good cop. Roy’s brother is the opposite: A seemingly shining light for good and a progressive political candidate. Roy thinks otherwise. He knows his brother too well. But none of that matters when an anonymous threat is handed over to the police. Someone is promising to kill Roy’s brother when he stops in town while on campaign. What unfolds is Lewis’s most nasty and violent novel. Boldt navigates a brutal chain of night clubs, halfway houses, and mobbed-up hotels in order to find those plotting to kill his brother. In the half-light of this lurid underworld he stumbles onto a conspiracy that will put him at odds with just about everything and everyone.
