Book excerpt: I was inspired to produce a third edition of the "Dakota Day Trips" series because of all the new television stories I've produced on people and places worth discovering since my last book was published. "The Road to Rural Wonders" introduces readers to a few intriguing stories on sites located on private property and characters who are not equipped to welcome travelers. However, in keeping with the theme of my previous books, there are more than forty new day trips in this volume for readers to visit, like the story on North Dakota's only waterfall. This book also welcomes you to ride "shotgun" as I recount how the "Off the Beaten Path" television series was developed and became so popular. Enjoy the ride!

Greater Than a Tourist- South Dakota by Author Max Hunhoff offers an inside scoop on the Midwest treasure of South Dakota. Most travel books tell you how to travel like a tourist. In these pages, you will discover advice that will help you throughout your stay. This book will not tell you exact addresses or store hours but instead will give you excitement and knowledge from a local that you may not find in other smaller print travel books. Travel like a local. Slow down, stay in one place, and get to know the people and culture. By the time you finish this book, you will be eager and prepared to travel to your next destination. Inside this travel guide book you will find: Insider tips from a local. Packing and planning list. List of travel questions to ask yourself or others while traveling. A place to write your travel bucket list. OUR STORY Traveling is a passion of the Greater than a Tourist book series creator. Lisa studied abroad in college, and for their honeymoon Lisa and her husband toured Europe. During her travels to Malta, an older man tried to give her some advice based on his own experience living on the island since he was a young boy. She was not sure if she should talk to the stranger but was interested in his advice. When traveling to some places she was wary to talk to locals because she was afraid that they weren't being genuine. Through her travels, Lisa learned how much locals had to share with tourists. Lisa created the Greater Than a Tourist book series to help connect people with locals. A topic that locals are very passionate about sharing.

Book Dakota in Exile

  • Author : Linda M. Clemmons
  • Publisher : Iowa and the Midwest Experienc
  • Release : 2019
  • ISBN : 1609386337
  • Pages : 281 pages

Download or read book Dakota in Exile written by Linda M. Clemmons and published by Iowa and the Midwest Experienc. This book was released on 2019 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Hopkins was a man caught between two worlds. As a member of the Dakota Nation, he was unfairly imprisoned, accused of taking up arms against U.S. soldiers when war broke out with the Dakota in 1862. However, as a Christian convert who was also a preacher, Hopkins's allegiance was often questioned by many of his fellow Dakota as well. Without a doubt, being a convert--and a favorite of the missionaries--had its privileges. Hopkins learned to read and write in an anglicized form of Dakota, and when facing legal allegations, he and several high-ranking missionaries wrote impassioned letters in his defense. Ultimately, he was among the 300-some Dakota spared from hanging by President Lincoln, imprisoned instead at Camp Kearney in Davenport, Iowa, for several years. His wife, Sarah, and their children, meanwhile, were forced onto the barren Crow Creek reservation in Dakota Territory with the rest of the Dakota women, children, and elderly. In both places, the Dakota were treated as novelties, displayed for curious residents like zoo animals. Historian Linda Clemmons examines the surviving letters from Robert and Sarah; other Dakota language sources; and letters from missionaries, newspaper accounts, and federal documents. She blends both the personal and the historical to complicate our understanding of the development of the Midwest, while also serving as a testament to the resilience of the Dakota and other indigenous peoples who have lived in this region from time immemorial.

Book American Folk Art 2 volumes

Download or read book American Folk Art 2 volumes written by Kristin G. Congdon and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2012-03-19 with total page 789 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Folk art is as varied as it is indicative of person and place, informed by innovation and grounded in cultural context. The variety and versatility of 300 American folk artists is captured in this collection of informative and thoroughly engaging essays. American Folk Art: A Regional Reference offers a collection of fascinating essays on the life and work of 300 individual artists. Some of the men and women profiled in these two volumes are well known, while others are important practitioners who have yet to receive the notice they merit. Because many of the artists in both categories have a clear identity with their land and culture, the work is organized by geographical region and includes an essay on each region to help make connections visible. There is also an introductory essay on U.S. folk art as a whole. Those writing about folk art to date tend to view each artist as either traditional or innovative. One of the major contributions of this work is that it demonstrates that folk artists more often exhibit both traits; they are grounded in their cultural context and creative in the way they make work their own. Such insights expand the study of folk art even as they readjust readers' understanding of who folk artists are.
