Book More Collectible Bells

Download or read book More Collectible Bells written by Donna S. Baker and published by Schiffer Book for Collectors. This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bells have played a prominent role in our society since the earliest of civilizations, yet few realize the scope of objects encompassed by this broad heading. While all bells share certain qualities--like the ability to produce sound--they vary amazingly in terms of size, shape, style, and material. A flat round Chinese gong is as much a bell as the graceful figurine hiding a swinging clapper beneath her skirt or a strap of round metal "sleigh bells" from the nineteenth century. Featuring over 620 beautiful color photos, this absorbing and entertaining book showcases the wonderful diversity of collectible bells, from animal bells, call bells, and rattles to commemoratives, figurals, miniatures, and holiday bells. Here you will find bells made of different materials, bells with more than one purpose, bells with common motifs, and much more. Both antique and modern, well-known to unique, one of these bells is sure to grab your fancy! Values, an index, and a bibliography are all included.

Book excerpt: Derek Bell’s name became inextricably linked with that of Porsche during his long and hugely successful career as a racing driver. In this new 276-page book, Bell collaborates with renowned motorsport author Richard Heseltine to give the reader a very personal insight into his experiences racing for the legendary German marque. The approach taken by this latest publication from Porter Press International is to look at every race Bell drove for Porsche, in detail and with revealing comments from the book’s subject. Light is cast on Bell’s most prestigious victories with Porsche - four of his five in the Le Mans 24 Hours, three in the Daytona 24 Hours, two in the World Sportscar Championship - and many more besides. Bell describes the Porsches he raced, from the fearsome 917 to the iconic 956, 962, and 911. And he shares his thoughts on the now-legendary drivers he raced with, including six-time Le Mans winner Jacky Ickx, the famously flamboyant Hans Stuck, and two immense talents who lost their lives to the sport, Jo Siffert and Stefan Bellof. The overall effect is a fascinating trip back in time to a golden era for Porsche and sports car racing as a whole.

This is the first ever English publication of these both literally and metaphorically enchanting Bohemian tales, by one of the great overlooked writers of the twentieth century.

Book Church Bells Classic Reprint

Download or read book Church Bells Classic Reprint written by Mears And Stainbank and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Church Bells It is interesting to note that we have recently te-hung the Abbey Bells in a new iron frame, and completed the octave by the addition of two treble bells, which were placed there as a Thank-offering for the conclusion of Peace, This work enables us to. Record a continuous connection with these bells from 1583 to 1919. The ringing of Church Bells, as distinguished from simply chiming, is a custom that has grown up in this Country during the last two centuries or more. It is usual abroad to have three or more large Bells hung for chiming only, but some of the Cathedrals have as many as three or four octaves of Bells, fixed rigid, and played automatically by means of carillon machinery. It is, however, only by ringing that the full tone of a hell is brought out. The illustration on page 58 shows a bell hung for ringing; by means of a rope attached to the wheel, the bell is gradually raised until it is quite inverted, and sets mouth upwards, being held in position by the stay resting in contact with the slider. At each pull of the rope the bell turns a complete revolution for every blow of the clapper. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Idea Factory

Book excerpt: The definitive history of America’s greatest incubator of innovation and the birthplace of some of the 20th century’s most influential technologies “Filled with colorful characters and inspiring lessons . . . The Idea Factory explores one of the most critical issues of our time: What causes innovation?” —Walter Isaacson, The New York Times Book Review “Compelling . . . Gertner's book offers fascinating evidence for those seeking to understand how a society should best invest its research resources.” —The Wall Street Journal From its beginnings in the 1920s until its demise in the 1980s, Bell Labs-officially, the research and development wing of AT&T-was the biggest, and arguably the best, laboratory for new ideas in the world. From the transistor to the laser, from digital communications to cellular telephony, it's hard to find an aspect of modern life that hasn't been touched by Bell Labs. In The Idea Factory, Jon Gertner traces the origins of some of the twentieth century's most important inventions and delivers a riveting and heretofore untold chapter of American history. At its heart this is a story about the life and work of a small group of brilliant and eccentric men-Mervin Kelly, Bill Shockley, Claude Shannon, John Pierce, and Bill Baker-who spent their careers at Bell Labs. Today, when the drive to invent has become a mantra, Bell Labs offers us a way to enrich our understanding of the challenges and solutions to technological innovation. Here, after all, was where the foundational ideas on the management of innovation were born.
