Download or read book Morals in Evolution Vol 2 written by L. T. Hobhouse and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-05-05 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Morals in Evolution, Vol. 2: A Study in Comparative Ethics The spirit being thus materialized appears to enjoy an independent existence of its own. Here we touch the central contradiction of Animism. What at first appears as merely the animating principle of a material body turns out to be itself quasi-substantial and capable of existence apart from that body. We must not press Animism for a logical solution of the question how this can be, for Animism remains Animism precisely because the difficulty has not been faced. The soul of Animism is clearly a Conception formed to unify and in a manner Gxplain the visible functions and processes of the body. It underlies the sensible and material, and sets out to explain them. But it turns out to be itself just such another visible and material thing - only thinner and less palpable - a mere double of the appearances which it should explain. For the primitive mind cannot grasp an object of thought with out transforming it into an object of sense. It needs a principle, connecting things that it can see or hear, and by a confusion of categories it makes of it merely another thing that it can see and hear. Download or read book Morals in Evolution Vol 2 written by L. T. Hobhouse and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-05 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Morals in Evolution, Vol. 2: A Study in Comparative Ethics 1. The history of law and custom gives us one aspect of ethical evolution. It sets forth the standard of conduct, or rather the standards recognized by different societies at different times. But behind the question of the moral standard is that of the moral basis, the grounds on which morality rests, the spirit in which it is conceived. For besides the question what kind of action is expected from us by our neighbours, our rulers, our spiritual pastors and masters, moral philosophy has to recognize the further question how it is that these expectations arise. On what grounds do rules of action rest, what authority promulgates them and by what sanction are they enforced? If it happens to be the interest of any individual to disobey them, what reason, other than physical compulsion, can be assigned for adhering to them? What is the penalty of disobedience? What, if wrong is done, arc the means of reconciliation? In other words, behind the question of the moral standard there is the philosophical question of the nature of moral obligation, of moral authority, of the moral sanction, or, to use one expression for them all, there is the question of the basis of the moral order. Book Handbook of the Sociology of Morality Volume 2

Download or read book Handbook of the Sociology of Morality Volume 2 written by Steven Hitlin and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-10-25 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook articulates how sociology can re-engage its roots as the scientific study of human moral systems, actions, and interpretation. This second volume builds on the successful original volume published in 2010, which contributed to the initiation of a new section of the American Sociological Association (ASA), thus growing the field. This volume takes sociology back to its roots over a century ago, when morality was a central topic of work and governance. It engages scholars from across subfields in sociology, representing each section of the ASA, who each contribute a chapter on how their subfield connects to research on morality. This reference work appeals to broader readership than was envisaged for the first volume, as the relationship between sociology as a discipline and its origins in questions of morality is further renewed. The volume editors focus on three areas: the current state of the sociology of morality across a range of sociological subfields; taking a new look at some of the issues discussed in the first handbook, which are now relevant in sometimes completely new contexts; and reflecting on where the sociology of morality should go next. This is a must-read reference for students and scholars interested in topics of morality, ethics, altruism, religion, and spirituality from across the social science.

Book The Structural Evolution of Morality

Download or read book The Structural Evolution of Morality written by J. McKenzie Alexander and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-11-15 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is certainly the case that morality governs the interactions that take place between individuals. But what if morality exists because of these interactions? This book, first published in 2007, argues for the claim that much of the behaviour we view as 'moral' exists because acting in that way benefits each of us to the greatest extent possible, given the socially structured nature of society. Drawing upon aspects of evolutionary game theory, the theory of bounded rationality, and computational models of social networks, it shows both how moral behaviour can emerge in socially structured environments, and how it can persist even when it is not typically viewed as 'rational' from a traditional economic perspective. This book also provides a theory of how moral principles and the moral sentiments play an indispensable role in effective choice, acting as 'fast and frugal heuristics' in social decision contexts.
