Download or read book The Spiritual Vision of Frank Buchman written by Philip Boobbyer and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Spiritual Vision of Frank Buchman is an in-depth look at the life, spirituality, and ideology of one of the most original figures in twentieth-century religion. Frank Buchman (1878–1961), the Pennsylvania-born initiator of the movement known as the Oxford Group and Moral Re-Armament, was a Lutheran pastor who first had influence as a college evangelist and missionary with the YMCA. His thinking then evolved during the 1930s, the Second World War, and the early Cold War as he tried to develop a world philosophy that could offer an answer to war and materialism. His impact was particularly felt in the areas of conflict resolution between nations and interfaith dialogue, and Alcoholics Anonymous also owed much to his methods. Philip Boobbyer’s book is the first scholarly overview of Buchman’s ideas and is an important addition to the growing corpus of academic literature on his worldwide outreach. Boobbyer shows how his work reflected broader processes in twentieth-century religion and politics and can be seen as a spiritual response to an emerging global society.

Book Appeasement and Rearmament

Download or read book Appeasement and Rearmament written by James P. Levy and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2006 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Standing against conventional wisdom, historian James Levy reevaluates Britain's twin policies of appeasement and rearmament in the late 1930s. By carefully examining the political and economic environment of the times, Levy argues that Neville Chamberlain crafted an active, logical and morally defensible foreign policy designed to avoid and deter a potentially devastating war. Levy shows that through Chamberlain's experience as Chancellor of the Exchequer, he knew that Britain had not yet fully recovered from the first World War and the longer an international confrontation could be avoided, the better Britain's chances of weathering the storm. In the end, Hitler could be neither appeased nor deterred, and recognizing this, Britain and France went into war better armed and better prepared to fight.

Book Violet Oakley

Download or read book Violet Oakley written by Bailey Van Hook and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-03-04 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Violet Oakley: An Artist's Life is the first full-length biography of Violet Oakley (1874–1961), the only major female artist of the beaux-arts mural movement in the United States, as well as an illustrator, stained glass artist, portraitist and author. There is much human interest here: a pampered and spoiled young woman who suddenly finds herself in near poverty, forced to make a living in illustration to support her parents; a sensitive and idealistic young woman who, in a desperate attempt to save her neurasthenic father, embraces Christian Science, a religion derided by her family and friends; a 28 year old woman who receives one of the plum commissions of the era, a mural cycle in the Pennsylvania State Capitol, in a field dominated by much older and predominantly male artists; a woman in her forties who although professionally successful finds herself very much alone and bonds with her student, Edith Emerson; a friend of artists like dancer Ruth St. Denis and violinist Albert Spalding who nevertheless was supremely conscious of social mores, the “Miss Oakley” of the Social Register who preferred the company of upper class to bohemian society; the tireless self-promoter who traveled abroad to become the unofficial visual historian of the League of Nations yet who ironically was increasingly regarded as a local artist.

Book Blinded by Might

  • Release : 1999
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 298 pages

Download or read book Blinded by Might written by Cal Thomas and published by Zondervan Publishing Company. This book was released on 1999 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was 1980. They had just helped to elect their president, Ronald Reagan. They had millions of dollars, the attention of the national media, and a supposed "army" of mobilized followers. This was their moment to reverse decades of creeping secularism, intrusive socialism, threatening communism, and raging humanism. They called themselves the "Moral Majority". But they failed. They failed in their first stated objectives to end abortion, eliminate pornography, restore the shattered American family, and usher in a better world in which "traditional values" were not only accepted but embraced. What happened? Why is America no better -- and probably worse -- after nearly twenty years of vigorous, sophisticated, and relentless political action by the church? Blinded by Might is the story of two men who were at the center of the Moral Majority. Cal Thomas and Ed Dobson, behind-the-scenes lieutenants to the architects of the religious right, argue that the reason the Moral Majority or any other religious-political movement cannot succeed is because it has been using the wrong tools in the wrong way for the wrong reasons. The authors retrace their own steps, showing why the efforts of people like Jerry Falwell, Ralph Reed, and James Dobson were doomed from the start. They disclose never-reported inside information on a movement that they helped create in order to show why it failed. And they use their mistakes and the mistakes of others to point people of faith in a more positive direction. The authors call for "unilateral disarmament" by the religious right and a re-armament using different weapons and different strategies. This stirring book offers a new vision for America from thearchitects of the Moral Majority. And it shows how conservative Christianity offers hope for lasting transformation through the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
