Book Moral Instruction in the Public Schools Through the Story Classic Reprint

Download or read book Moral Instruction in the Public Schools Through the Story Classic Reprint written by J. A. Churchill and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-17 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Moral Instruction in the Public Schools Through the Story It is a matter of vital concern to those who have the interests of the6 nation at heart that ways and means be developed to give the children of our schools education along the lines of character building. That the children of today are the citizens of tomorrow is a truism makes it none the less imperative that we give careful heed to the kind of character material we are putting, or allowing to be put, into the moral structure of those future citizens. More and more the realization is growing that the school has not been doing all that it can in this important matter, and more and more firmly is the conviction being forced upon those who are thinking in terms of national interest that the school must take over as a definite part of its work the moral instruction of the children. We need to appreciate the fact that the child begins life ignorant of the moral experience of previous generations, 'and minus the consequent moral wisdom. He must learn to speak the truth, to be kind, to obey, to do his Share of the world's work, to serve the good. If he is to progress above the former level, he must be put into touch with that previous experience. And it is not enough for his best development that he be put in touch with it in the hit or miss way of the chance contacts with ordinary life. He must be made the possessor of the accumulated moral knowledge of the race. As he is trained according to carefully developed plan's in other branches of knowledge, so must he be in this. Only so can we hope to have a mass of citizens whose purposes and ambitions are in accord with our national standards and traditions and the ever expanding ideals Of civilization. The state department of education believes that results can be obtained in moral instruction through the use of stories which illustrate the virtues. In this pamphlet, arranged according to grades, are listed a number of stories illustrating particular virtues, which, as a result of a questionnaire sent out to the teachers of the state, it is considered desirable to try to inculcate in the lives of the children. Under each virtue several stories are given, with reference to the books where they may be found. Under the subject, Respect and Reverence, reference is made in each grade to Ethical Readings from the Bible. Teachers will find many passages referring to each of several virtues. They should make whatever selection that seems best suited to their needs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ethical and Moral, Instruction in Schools The problem of moral education is an old one, older indeed than schools. The obligation for its solution has therefore rested upon the shoulders of others besides schoolmasters every responsi ble class in the community has borne a share of the burden. That our present discussion should emphasize schools and school-teaching merely indicates the special form which the problem takes in our time. In no way does it denote that moral education is wholly the business of the school, or that it is the school's whole business. It simply suggests that there is an increasing con scious dependence upon the school as a moulder of character. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Moral Instruction of Children Moral education is everywhere acknowledged to be the most important part of all education; but there has not been the same agreement in regard to the best means of securinglit in the school. This has been due in part to a want of insight into the two fold nature of this sort of' education; for instruction in morals includes two things: the formation of right ideas and the formation of right habits. Right ideas are necessary to guide the will, but right habits are the product of the will itself. It is possible to have right ideas to some extent without the corresponding moral habits. On this account the formation of correct habits has been esteemed by some to be the chief thing. But nu conscious habits - mere use and wont - do not seem to deserve the title of moral in its highest sense. The moral act should be a considerate one, and rest on the adoption of principles to guide one's actions. To those who lay stress on the practical side and demand the formation of correct habits, the school as it is seems to be a great ethical instrumentality. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Moral Training in the Public Schools I have been requested to describe minutely a plan for child training used in the Lagrange School, Toledo, Ohio, for tle past 'seven years. This plan was evolved slowly, and could never have become systematized, as it now is, but for the hearty sympathy of all the teachers of the school, and their never-failing co-operation with the principal in giving a fair trial to ideas suggested. There were many failures at first, and many fine theories were abandoned because a trial proved them impracticable. But failure only served to stimulate us to greater effort, for there was conviction on the part of those interested, that there is a new step to be taken in popular education - that is the recognition and development of the child's higher self; the awakening of the child to his higher powers, teaching him how to develop and use them, that the child may make life happy and successful. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Psychology of Conduct: Applied to the Problem of Moral Education in the Public Schools This book represents an attempt to draw on the best of ancient and modern thought for contributions to an effort toward the solution of the main problems of moral education. Its chief concern is to trace conduct to its sources, and to show briefly how the principles evolved may be applied to the actual work of teaching. The book was not written for specialists. It is in tended for the use of teachers and those preparing to teach, and Contains material elaborated and tested in the author's classes during a period of ten years. The educational applications of the principles studied are worked out only in part, as the teacher will readily make his own applications to the varying situations and conditions he meets in the course of his work. No great amount of originality is claimed for the book. Something of the historical development of cer tain phases of the problem of moral education has been given, and numerous quotations are made from Kant to show that to-day the problems of ethical theory and of moral education are practically what they were in the days of that great thinker. Book Moral Education an Experimental Investigation Classic Reprint

Download or read book Moral Education an Experimental Investigation Classic Reprint written by William T. Whitney and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Moral Education an Experimental Investigation The Federal and State Constitutions forbid that instruction in religion shall be given in the public schools. They permit, however, moral instruction. The moral instruction allowed in the schools may be given as courses in ethics or moral training, and ethical judgments may be formed from the study of the several subjects contained in the school curriculum. It is also believed that moral training is received as a result of the habits formed in following the prescribed school life and its work. It is acknowledged, however, that such training and instruction is incidental, and like the incidental method of teaching spelling, the results secured are not satisfactory. Morality in its practical sense is the conduct of the individual in society. Moral instruction and moral training, therefore, must be social and must be rooted in the social instincts if right motives and right conduct result. The emphasis must be placed upon the ideal and the idea of service. There are two distinct phases of moral education - moral training and moral instruction. Moral training is the more important in the early life of the individual. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Moral Instruction in Elementary Schools in England and Wales: A Return Compiled From Official Documents "The purpose of the Public Elementary School is to form and strengthen the character, and to develop the intelligence, of the children entrusted to it... Though their opportunities are but brief, the teachers can yet do much to lay the foundations of conduct. They can endeavour, by example and influence, aided by the sense of discipline which should pervade the School, to implant in the children habits of industry, self-control, and courageous perseverance in the face of difficulties; they can teach them to reverence what is noble, to be ready for self-sacrifice, and to strive their utmost after purity and truth; they can foster a strong respect for duty, and that consideration and respect for others which must be the foundation of unselfishness and the true basis of all good manners; while the corporate life of the School, especially in the playground, should develop that instinct for fairness and for loyalty to one another which is the germ of a wider sense of honour in later life. In all these endeavours the School should enlist, as far as possible, the interest and co-operation of the parents and the home in a united effort to enable the children not merely to reach their full development as individuals, but also to become upright and useful members of the community in which they live, and worthy sons and daughters of the country to which they belong." Introduction to the Code of Regulations for Public Elementary Schools. "The purpose of the School is education in the full sense of the word: the high function of the teacher is to prepare the child for the life of a good citizen. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Moral Education It has been written partly in accordance with theory, and partly from practice and observation, and needs the further test of practice. Owing to interfering circum stances the writer is unable to give this further test. And offers the work just as it is. Mr. Horace Mann, I believe, has said that as far as guaranteed by his observation, ten men fail from moral defect to one who fails from intellectual defect, and if this is the case, together with the tendency shown by the evident growing desire for better moral education. Then there is both the expressed need and wish for the latter. If, too, Mr. John Dewey's statement that What the best and wisest parent wants for his own child. That must be the community's want for all of its children. Includes detailed training in morals and manners. This is another evidence of its need. In systematic moral training it is desirable that as far as possible it should be put upon the same scientific basis as other branches of learning - naught according to the laws of psychology and education. A knowledge of the laws of modern psychology makes it possible to give younger children teaching through making the proper mental suggestion interest ing. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Moral and Literary Training in Public Schools The question is as to the method. My idea, as many of you know, is to make use of the gems of literature. The literature of the world embodies a universal moral creed. In its fulness here and there may be found the holy teachings of the Bible, in language pleasing to the ear of youth, and in form adapted to his understanding. It inculcates all the substantial teachings of the Scriptures without awakening the suspicion that the private realm of devotional form is to be invaded. A broad-minded selection of noble passages, though it' may not be able to do all we could Wish in a moral way, can certainly do much to raise men to a high moral, political, and social plane. It may not make men prayerful, but it can make them respectful and respectable. It may not give them the wisdom of statesmen, but it can make them intelligent voters and fervent patriots. It may not fit them for a future life, but it can do much towards making this one pleasant to themselves and for their fellow-men. It can put a light into their hearts that will illumine many of earth's darkest places. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Moral Instruction and Training in Schools, 1908, Vol. 2 of 2: Report of an International Inquiry In the autumn of 1906 a number of persons interested in educational work met in private conference in London to consider whether more might not be done by means of moral instruction and training in schools to impart higher ideals of conduct, to strengthen character and to promote readiness to work together for social ends. Everyone felt how much the schools were already doing for moral education and training. But would it not be possible by means of systematic moral instruction to accomplish far more? Had not the experience of the French schools shown that this was possible? And was not French experience confirmed by the experience of Japan? The discussion quickly showed that those present were divided in opinion. On the fundamental point at issue, some held the religious sanction to be indispensable to moral education; others that, so far as school instruction was concerned, the appeal to personal and to social considerations would suffice. But, as the debate proceeded, it became clear that each side was feeling the weight of the arguments advanced by the other. The problem was not so simple as it at first appeared. Upon what conditions did the good influence of a school really depend? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
