Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: REVIEW: . . . Students of educational theory and practice will enjoy-and learn from-this brief but enlightening and readable book. Recommended for upper-division undergraduates, graduate students, faculty, and practitioners. . . - September 98 CHOICE The four teachers in this study teach diverse subjects in a variety of settings. Although definitions of moral education are shaped by their backgrounds, their institutions, their perceptions of their students' needs, and their disciplines, all of the teachers consider moral education to be central to their work. For all four, the moral prototype serves as an appeal to the students' imagination, an opportunity to build connectedness and, most important, an invitation to young people to transcend themselves.

Book Sowing the Seeds of Character

Download or read book Sowing the Seeds of Character written by Judd Kruger Levingston and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2009-06-08 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rabbi and educator shows how moral education can be crafted to address each of the three main branches of the moral life: philosophy, civics, and ethics. Sowing the Seeds of Character: The Moral Education of Adolescents in Public and Private Schools is a book for all teachers and parents. It rests on the premise that the moral education of students falls within the purview of schools, whether they assume responsibility for it or not. Regardless of the place of moral education in the formal curriculum, all teachers serve as moral exemplars to their students, for good or for ill. Teachers of science, social studies, history, and literature courses cannot help but inculcate moral sensibility and attitudes in their students by the ways in which they lead them to grapple with—or glide over—the moral implications of what they teach. Judd Kruger Levingston draws many lessons and examples from his extensive research and teaching experience in Muslim, Jewish, Roman Catholic, public, Quaker, and Chinese schools. He argues that teachers should become proficient in directing role-playing simulations of moral decision-making as morally complex topics arise within the standard curriculum.

Book Challenges from the Middle

Download or read book Challenges from the Middle written by Emeka Nzeocha and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-09 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Behavior. Personality. Adolescence. Academic performance. These are some of the buzz phrases prevalent in middle school settings as educators wrestle with how to understand, manage, lead, and work with our middle school students and help shape them into responsible young adults. Character education (and many terms like it) is a concept that has been around for many years on every level of the educational process. In the middle school setting, there is an urgent need for character education, regardless of what form it takes. Sadly, some schools and/or the administration abandon this process in the vigorous pursuit of higher test scores. This book condenses my empirical research into character education with a focus on the inner city middle school setting. I examined how school stakeholders viewed this topic, what they know about it, why they support or disapprove of character education, and possible steps schools could take to implement their own initiatives successfully, both in the middle school setting and others as well.
