Book Moral and Religious Education Classic Reprint

Download or read book Moral and Religious Education Classic Reprint written by Sophie Bryant and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Moral and Religious Education The Modern Educator's Library has been designed to give considered expositions of the best theory and practice in English education of to-day. It is planned to cover the principal problems of educational theory in general, of curriculum and organisation, of some unexhausted aspects of the history of education, and of special branches of applied education. The Editor and his colleagues have had in view the needs of young teachers and of those training to be teachers, but since the school and the schoolmaster are not the sole factors in the educative process, it is hoped that educators in general (and which of us is not in some sense or other an educator?) as well as the professional schoolmaster may find in the series some help in understanding precept and practice in education of to-day and to-morrow. For we have borne in mind not only what is but what ought to be. To exhibit the educators work as a vocation requiring the best possible preparation is the spirit in which these volumes have been written. No artificial uniformity has been sought or imposed, and while the Editor is responsible for the series in general, the responsibility for the opinions expressed in each volume rests solely with its author. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories and Story-Telling: In Moral and Religious Education Such a place as this story-telling has in the education of the race. Long before teachers or text-books appeared instruction was given in story form to the children who gathered about the mother's knee. Youths, grouped about their elders before the evening camp-fire, thrilled to the story of old deeds of valor and braced their souls to vie with the heroes who had won the admiration of their fathers' fathers. Modern mothers, not knowing why they do it, use the same magic to gain the same ends. The great German prophet of childhood gave the story a large and honored place in the rarely wise and successful institution which he founded. From time to time prophet and sage, preacher and statesman have made it their tool for the shaping of human conduct and character. So instinct and genius have made it their method in the past. Now, perhaps more consciously and thoughtfully than ever before, teachers are seeking to make it a part of their equipment. In the field of moral and religious education this movement is beginning to be felt, yet not as deeply or as widely as it should be. The Sunday school, our special institution for moral and religious culture, has not made as large use of the method as has the home and the public school (at least in the kinder garten), and in all three of these institutions what has been attempted has been chiefly with the younger chil dren. With such it is almost the only method to be used. With the older pupils other means of influence are avail able, but this one never loses its power if it be used with tactful adaptation to changing interests and motives. It has its large place in dealing With the adolescent, and with the adult as well. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Moral and Religious Education of the Working Classes: The Speech of Lord Ashley, M. P., In the House of Commons, on Tuesday, February 28, 1843 Sir, - The question, that I have undertaken to submit to the deliberation of this House, is one so prodigiously vast, and so unspeakably important, that there may well be demanded an apology, if not an explanation, from any individual member who presumes to handle so weighty and so difficult a matter. And, Sir, had any real difference of opinion existed, I should probably have refrained from the task; but late events have, I fear, proved that the moral condition of our people is unhealthy and even perilous - all are pretty nearly agreed that something further must be attempted for their welfare; and I now venture, therefore, to offer, for the discussion, both matter and opportunity. Surely, Sir, it will not be necessary as a preliminary to this motion to enquire on whom should rest the responsibility of our present condition - our duty is to examine the moral state of the country; to say whether it be safe, honourable, happy, and becoming the dignity of a Christian kingdom; and, if it be not so, to address ourselves to the cure of evils which, unlike most inveterate and deeply-rooted abuses, though they cannot be suffered to exist without danger, may be removed without the slightest grievance, real or imaginary, to any community or even any individual. Book The Teacher and the Child

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teacher and the Child: Elements of Moral and Religious Teaching in the Day School, the Home, and the Sunday School This little book is published in full consciousness of the quickened interest in the child and his education, whether intellectual, moral or religious, which is so marked a feature of the new century in all the most progressive nations of the world. Owing to this deepened interest in the child, his nature and his nurture, volunteer and professional educators alike are beginning to look earnestly towards sociology and the sciences of psychology and ethics for guidance and help in their work. In the following pages, certain aspects of education, especially the moral training of young children, are treated with the greatest possible simplicity, yet an effort is made to present some of the most recent and living thought with which these associated sciences supply us. The book, which is new, if at all, only in aim and setting and not in subject-matter, is not written for the initiated few, but for the interested many. Technical language is avoided. If they properly and faithfully instruct and train their children in the principles Of morality and religion, securing for them wholesome association and environment, availing themselves of all the great and gracious helps provided by the gospel Of Christ, there should be very little doubt as to the results. The ancient declaration stands that a child thoroughly trained into the ways and habits of righteousness is not likely to depart from those ways in sabse quent years. If parents will employ the proper means they may have strong assurance that they may have the happiness Of seeing their children develop into the strength and beauty of Christian character. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Moral Class-Book The work, nevertheless, must be regarded as only a humble aid in the business of moral education. Precept, cmmfle, and training are the three degrees of comparison in this important business - the first being good, the second better, and the third best of all. The education of home is also of infinitely greater im portance than that which comes from any other source. Finally, we need scarcely remark, it is by the influence of religious prin ciple that we may chiefly expect to give the right stamp inhuman character. When we examine the present volume with a regard to these principles, we find that, being purely didactic, it can only be expected to do a little for the greatest of causes - religion; which the Editors conceive should be taught directly from the oracles of Sacred Truth. This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters on the Moral and Religious Duties of Parents The duties devolving upon parents are the most important of any which God has imposed upon man. On the judicious and faithful performance of these duties depends, in, a great degree, the character of their children. Solomon has said, "Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it." History and observation both bear witness to the truth of this declaration Those who are rightly educated, with but few exceptions, make virtuous and useful members of society; while but few of those whose moral culture is neglected in childhood and youth, ever turn to the path of duty. Book The New Testament in Modern Education Classic Reprint

Download or read book The New Testament in Modern Education Classic Reprint written by John Morgan Jones and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Testament in Modern Education Recent events have undoubtedly brought a great increase of interest in the significance of Morality and Religion for Education. The Science and Art of religious Education are, however, still in their infancy. The most fundamental problems still await scientific discussion and'a practical solution. The specific features of the educational ideal, the definite value and application of psychological study and its results - both personal and soc1al - the educational significance of Religion and Theology, the relation between Home, School and Church as educational agencies, and many similar questions still represent difficulties that have not been overcome. Rather unfortunately, almost exclusive attention has been given to the elaboration of educational methods, to the comparative neglect of the content, and material of moral and religious instruction. The latter, however, must become our primary study, for how we teach must in the end depend upon what we want to teach. So far the Bible - and that the mediaeval Bible - has been taken for granted in educational discussion, but in reality it presents a problem of ultimate significance. After all, wh should we, in the schools of the twentieth century, teac as an important element in our instruction, the literature and history of an ancient Semitic race or the fugitive writings of a little group of Hellenistic religious enthusiasts of the first century On the face of it such a question demands a far more thorough and scientific discussion than has yet been given to it. Our very right to live comfortably m the modern world as distinguished from the Middle Ages depends upon the answer we give to 1t.
