Book Northwestern Ontario Forest Ecosystem Interpretations

Download or read book Northwestern Ontario Forest Ecosystem Interpretations written by G. D. Racey and published by Thunder Bay : Northwestern Ontario Forest Technology Development Unit, Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. This book was released on 1989 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guide to assist in the application of the Northwestern Ontario forest ecosystem classification to forest management in northwestern Ontario. Interpretations relate vegetation, soil, site, and climatic factors to limitations or opportunities for forest management. The guide introduces the concept of forest ecosystem interpretations; presents the concept as a method of applying the classification to site-specific management through a set of generalized treatment units that may be further adapted to accommodate local variations in site or climate; describes some basic silvicultural interpretations, followed by interpretations for wildlife; and deals with incorporation of the system into operational forestry surveys.

Book Effects of Climate Change on Moose Populations

Download or read book Effects of Climate Change on Moose Populations written by Robert Stewart Rempel and published by . This book was released on 2012-10 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The effect of climate change on moose (Alces alces) is of interest within the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (OMNR) because of the potential role this species plays in the conservation of woodland caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou) and possible losses of recreational and economic opportunities if moose populations decrease. Moose have numerous direct and indirect linkages to climate and represent a potentially useful indicator of how climate change is affecting wildlife populations in general. The objective of this vulnerability study was to utilize a plausible, parsimonious, systems-level model of moose population dynamics to explore the response of moose populations to climate projections in the northeast Clay Belt region of Ontario (Ecodistrict 3E-1). Scenario analysis was conducted using a variety of assumptions about future biotic and abiotic interactions under Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) scenarios A2 and B1 (for details see IPCC 2000)."--publisher.

Book Timber Management Guidelines for the Provision of Moose Habitat

This book was released on 1988 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guidelines to assist resource managers in maintaining or creating through timber management the diversity of age classes and species of vegetation that provide habitat for moose. The document also summarizes moose habitat requirements and the possible impact of various timber management operations. Guidelines are recommended for both general needs for moose habitat and specific needs that can be identified for specific geographic areas.

Book Conservation of Faunal Diversity in Forested Landscapes

Download or read book Conservation of Faunal Diversity in Forested Landscapes written by R.M. DeGraaf and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest wildlife conservation is critically required in many parts of the world today. This book presents a merger between the elements of wildlife conservation and habitat conservation, and explains how these disciplines can be used to promote the conservation of vertebrates in forests around the world.

Book Selected Wildlife and Habitat Features Inventory Manual for Use in Forest Management Planning

Download or read book Selected Wildlife and Habitat Features Inventory Manual for Use in Forest Management Planning written by Ranta, W. Bruce and published by Peterborough : Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. This book was released on 1998 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The guidelines presented in this publication have been prepared to assist resource managers in the standardized inventory of habitat, and in some cases, populations of selected species of wildlife that potentially occur within the Crown forests of Ontario. The first section describes generalized methods and techniques, including information on personnel and training, planning of field surveys, wildlife habitat inventory and geographic information system technology, and recording the location of observations. The second and main section presents methodologies to identify and delineate featured species habitats. Chapters in this section provide methodologies regarding: moose aquatic feeding areas, bald eagle and osprey nests, and great blue heron colonies; moose winter habitat; white-tailed deer winter habitat; provincially featured birds, mammals, reptiles, and plants; woodland caribou winter habitat, calving and nursery sites; nests of red-shouldered hawk and great gray owl; southern flying squirrel habitats; West Virginia white butterfly habitats; and other vulnerable birds, mammals, and reptiles that can be locally featured.

Book Moose Alces Alces Movement and Space Occupancy Within Their Home Range in Southern Ontario

Download or read book Moose Alces Alces Movement and Space Occupancy Within Their Home Range in Southern Ontario written by Ricardo Ung and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As land-use change threatens wildlife viability, the understanding of how animals move through spatially fragmented landscapes has important implications for the long-term persistence and management of species. This research compares moose movement and space-use patterns between Algonquin Provincial Park (20 moose) and Wildlife Management Unit 49 (17 moose) in southern Ontario from 2006 to 2008. Moose were found to be using areas in the home range that are not normally used more often in the park relative to the management unit, and that there are signs, although not significant, that the use of land covers between the two locations may be diverging. These differences are likely driven by the differences in predator and road densities between the two locations. I interpret these findings to suggest that Algonquin Provincial Park is protecting moose from the impacts of roads, but that moose can survive in the road-fragmented landscapes if there is enough habitat available.
