Book excerpt: The year-long mooring records in the Arabian Sea (15 deg 30'N/61 deg 30E) show clearly the semi-annual biological response to the northeast and southwest monsoons. Each monsoon causes the mixed layer to deepen, but for the northeast monsoon, convective processes dominate, while during the southwest monsoon, the mixed layer deepens via wind-induced mixing. During both mixing periods, chlorophyll declines, and then increases as the water column stratifies. The annual cycle of chlorophyll variability at the mooring site (the climatological center of the Findlater Jet) generally follows the mixed layer depth. Strong diel variability in phytoplankton and particle variables were observed, and coherence analysis indicated that these were modulated more by water column processes (e.g., changes in the mixed layer depth) than by solar variability. We have demonstrated the utility of moored sensor systems in an unforgiving environment. The high-resolution data are extremely useful to those trying to understand the drivers for seasonal variability in productivity. The seasonal variability in productivity is crucial to interpret the export of carbon from the surface ocean to depth. The results will fuel consideration of the importance of diel processes in determining the activities of plankton.

Book excerpt: Estimation of the upper ocean heat budget from one year of observations at a moored array in the north central Arabian Sea shows a rough balance between the horizontal advection and time change in heat, associated with the propagation of mesoscale eddies. During the southwest monsoon a coastal filament exports recently upwelled water from the Omani coast to the site of the array, 600 km offshore. Altimetry shows mildly elevated levels of surface eddy kinetic energy along the Arabian coast during the SW monsoon, suggesting that such offshore transport may be an important component of the Arabian Sea heat budget. The sea surface temperature (SST) and mixed layer depth are observed to respond to high frequency (HF) variability in the surface heat flux and wind stress. The rectified effect of this HF forcing is investigated in a three-dimensional reduced gravity thermodynamic model of the Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean.

It is written as a textbook about the NIO for graduate students, lecturers, and researchers in physical oceanography. It will also be useful for courses on the interior, coastal, and equatorial dynamics in any other ocean. It helps readers, particularly new entrants to the field, to gain a comprehensive understanding of tropical-ocean dynamics by: developing from first principles the equation set for the linear continuously stratified (LCS) model, which has long been used to study tropical oceans; and then obtaining solutions that explore different aspects of the dynamics. Part 1 of the book provides an overview of observed ocean circulations and forcing functions in the NIO that are linked to the SAM. Part 2 develops the equations of motion for the LCS model. Part 3 (Free Waves) and Part 4 (Forced Solutions) derive and discuss analytic solutions to the LCS model that illustrate basic processes in the interior (unbounded), coastal, and equatorial regions of the ocean. The last two chapters of Part 4 consider more complicated processes and phenomena that build upon the simpler solutions previously found: vertical propagation of coastal and equatorial waves, and the Indian Ocean's shallow overturning circulations. To expedite this change, an intellectual history of the field is provided, from the early whaler-naturalists to oceanarium observations, whale carcass studies, pseud-scientific inquiries into human-dolphin communication, and longterm field studies. Subsequent chapters illustrate use of systematic methodologies to better understand bottlenose dolphin social relations. Samuels and Gifford adapted a quantitative technique from primate behavioral research to study agonism among captive dolphins. Males were dominant to females; females had stable, age-ordered dominance relations; and two males had a changeable dominance relationship. Sex differences in dominance relations generated predictions about the behavior of wild dolphins that can be tested using this technique. Samuels, Richards and Mann investigated the association of wild juvenile dolphins with their mothers after weaning. Juvenile daughters continued to associate with their mothers, whereas juvenile sons rarely did so even though they remained in the same area as their mothers. Sex differences in juvenile association patterns appeared to foreshadow adult social networks. Samuels and Spradlin applied quantitative behavioral techniques to evaluate dolphin behavior in Swim-With-Dolphins programs. Two program types were defined by presence ('Controlled') or absence ('Not-Controlled') of explicit trainer regulation of dolphin-with-human interactions. In 'Not-Controlled' programs, the behavior of dolphins and humans threatened human safety and dolphin well-being, whereas 'Controlled' programs effectively minimized behaviors that posed risk to dolphins or humans.
