Book excerpt: A backcountry commune, consisting of cave-like dwellings hollowed out of an immense sandstone formation in the remote high-desert landscape west of Moab, becomes the focal point of a murder case. A nineteen year old girl named Sunshine, a member of the small community, mysteriously disappears one evening. She was last seen hiking from her residence into an oncoming September thunderstorm. Orin, the leader of the commune, organizes a small search party the next morning to look for her. They discover Sunshine about a mile from the commune, dead by strangulation. Deputy Sheriff Manny Rivera arrives at the crime scene and begins his investigation. He looks around at the vast empty terrain, wondering why anyone would kill a seemingly innocent young lady out in the middle of nowhere. The other residents of the commune, an unusual collection of drop-outs from society, are all potential suspects. Rivera's pursuit of the killer introduces the reader to the commune and its bizarre history, a strange backcountry hermit who lives in a camper-top pickup truck, and a picturesque ranch overlooking Labyrinth Canyon owned by a wealthy well-connected third-generation rancher. Rivera receives assistance in his investigation from Amy Rousseau, PhD, an attractive botanist who is quickly becoming his love interest. Rivera conducts his investigation while dealing with problems caused by his inexperienced new boss, Sheriff Denny Campbell. In the end, the deputy's own life is endangered as he gets closer to understanding the motive for Sunshine's murder.

  • Author : Joe Barfield
  • Publisher : Joe Barfield
  • Release : 2010-11-13
  • ISBN : 1452478678
  • Pages : 326 pages

Download or read book Moon Shadow written by Joe Barfield and published by Joe Barfield. This book was released on 2010-11-13 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is Moon Shadow fiction or history in the making?Set in 2012, Moon Shadow depicts the financial collapse and subsequent invasion of the United States. Completed over a decade ago, this story is so close to current events that it seems more historical than a work of fiction. From a terrorist attack using three hijacked airliners to a top-secret spaceplane project dubbed Aurora, both the premise and content of my novel have become reality. Was Mark Halperin right in calling President Barrack Obama a "dick?" Not really. But what if the president were an unintentional traitor? See what happens when Obama destroys American in my novel Moon Shadow.Intended to be a work of fiction only to entertain, author Joe Barfield admits even he is surprised as events in his novel, Moon Shadow, are becoming more historical than fictional with each passing day. Barfield said, Moon Shadow tells the story about the fall of the greatest country in the world—The United States of America. The collapse is not so much from outside forces, but rather from the greed within. I never dreamed how close Moon Shadow would describe events in America and the Mid-East today.Written fourteen years ago, Moon Shadow was updated recently to better describe current events that are quickly changing the world. Reflecting on his novel, Barfield also said, I originally based the collapse of the United States on the greed of American CEOs, the corruption of our leaders, and the collapse of the financial institutions during President George H. Bush’s administration. Now it seems Moon Shadow is closer to depicting the events of President Barrack Obama’s administration. Abraham Linoln said, "America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves." Just a few disturbing things found in Moon Shadow are the use of three hijacked passenger airliners, with one crashing into a football game killing the president. Another war occurs in the Middle East that is very similar to Desert Storm but with a big difference—The United States is defeated. The novel predicted a Democrat would be elected in 2008 and he would destroy America financially with a National Debt near 20 trillion. Where are we today? The author was quoted saying: From the beginning of time every empire has collapsed. There have been no exceptions.Moon Shadow, depicts America's leadership, greed, and corruption as the reasons for the collapse, will get people on both sides of the fence talking. It is an exciting edge-of-your-seat story about a handful of America's best jet pilots desperately trying to take America back after the invasion. Their reluctant leader, Beau Gex, is forced to lead them to safety. Trapped behind enemy lines, this small group of pilots fight against overwhelming odds. They are forced to fly one last deadly mission, where America's future depends on its best pilot, Beau Gex, defeating a technologically advanced F-14 fighter jet at night. But all he has on his side is an antiquated, World War II, P-51 Mustang and an old Indian Legend, Moon Shadow. For the not-faint-at-heart, Moon Shadow begins with one of the edgiest torture scenes since Marathon Man. And for those looking for love mixed in with their adventure, Moon Shadow satisfies as a tender romance between Beau and Krysti Socorro, an exquisite doctor. Will the betrayal of another tear them apart forever? Can a child save their love or is it too late?

Book excerpt: When a new and potentially planet-killing contagion is discovered, Moon Shadow, an isolated resort town located in Alaska's primitive and rugged interior, becomes the focus of a military-style incursion. Major Pepper, who is in charge of the operation, has the local residents rounded up into a razor-wire inclosed quarantine. Because of the danger of a potential pandemic, they are to be transferred to a more prison-like underground quarantine. Two of the residents, Trevor, a young physician, and Jodie, an Earth Project environmentalist, are not having any of this obvious violation of human rights. They escape and are hunted down like fugitives with the full arsenal of the US Army at the Major's disposal. The two have to use a zip line to escape a three-story-burning lodge. When they seek refuge in an abandoned gold mine, the entrance is caved in by a missile strike. The two fugitives do manage to find a way out of the mine and try to make their way back to civilization and safety by floating down river on a rubber raft. While fighting for their lives against nature and the deranged Major Pepper, the two begin to fall in love with each other. They discover they have more to live for than exposing the Major for his treachery and his murder of innocent civilians for the greater good.

The Moon smells like gunpowder. Every lunar walker since Apollo 11 has noticed it: a burnt-metal scent that reminds them of war. Caden Dechert, the chief of the U.S. mining operation on the edge of the Sea of Serenity, thinks the smell is just a trick of the mind—a reminder of his harrowing days as a Marine in the war-torn Middle East back on Earth. It’s 2072, and lunar helium-3 mining is powering the fusion reactors that are bringing Earth back from environmental disaster. But competing for the richest prize in the history of the world has destroyed the oldest rule in space: Safety for All. When a bomb kills one of Dechert’s diggers on Mare Serenitatis, the haunted veteran goes on the hunt to expose the culprit before more blood is spilled. But as Dechert races to solve the first murder in the history of the Moon, he gets caught in the crosshairs of two global powers spoiling for a fight. Reluctant to be the match that lights this powder-keg, Dechert knows his life and those of his crew are meaningless to the politicians. Even worse, he knows the killer is still out there, hunting. In his desperate attempts to save his crew and prevent the catastrophe he sees coming, the former Marine uncovers a dangerous conspiracy that, with one spark, can ignite a full lunar war, wipe out his team . . . and perhaps plunge the Earth back into darkness.
