Book excerpt: Published when Wallace was just twenty-four years old, The Broom of the System stunned critics and marked the emergence of an extraordinary new talent. At the center of this outlandishly funny, fiercely intelligent novel is the bewitching heroine, Lenore Stonecipher Beadsman. The year is 1990 and the place is a slightly altered Cleveland, Ohio. Lenore’s great-grandmother has disappeared with twenty-five other inmates of the Shaker Heights Nursing Home. Her beau, and boss, Rick Vigorous, is insanely jealous, and her cockatiel, Vlad the Impaler, has suddenly started spouting a mixture of psycho-babble, Auden, and the King James Bible. Ingenious and entertaining, this debut from one of the most innovative writers of his generation brilliantly explores the paradoxes of language, storytelling, and reality.

Book The Plot Thickens

  • Author : Mary Elizabeth Leighton
  • Publisher : Ohio University Press
  • Release : 2018-12-17
  • ISBN : 0821446495
  • Pages : 522 pages

Download or read book The Plot Thickens written by Mary Elizabeth Leighton and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2018-12-17 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1800s, books were largely unillustrated. By the 1830s and 1840s, however, innovations in wood- and steel-engraving techniques changed how Victorian readers consumed and conceptualized fiction. A new type of novel was born, often published in serial form, one that melded text and image as partners in meaning-making. These illustrated serial novels offered Victorians a reading experience that was both verbal and visual, based on complex effects of flash-forward and flashback as the placement of illustrations revealed or recalled significant story elements. Victorians’ experience of what are now canonical novels thus differed markedly from that of modern readers, who are accustomed to reading single volumes with minimal illustration. Even if modern editions do reproduce illustrations, these do not appear as originally laid out. Modern readers therefore lose a crucial aspect of how Victorians understood plot—as a story delivered in both words and images, over time, and with illustrations playing a key role. In The Plot Thickens, Mary Elizabeth Leighton and Lisa Surridge uncover this overlooked narrative role of illustrations within Victorian serial fiction. They reveal the intricacy and richness of the form and push us to reconsider our notions of illustration, visual culture, narration, and reading practices in nineteenth-century Britain.

Book Nuni

    Book Details:
  • Author : John Howard Griffin
  • Publisher : Wings Press
  • Release : 2010-10-01
  • ISBN : 1609401441
  • Pages : 265 pages

Download or read book Nuni written by John Howard Griffin and published by Wings Press. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After John Howard Griffin's escape from Nazi-occupied France, he was shipped to the South Pacific, where he was stationed as an isolated observer in the Solomon Islands. That experience led to his second novel, Nuni (1956). As in his first novel, The Devil Rides Outside, an American professor is confronted by an alien reality. In Nuni, that reality is a "primitive," almost Neolithic society. Yet, the professor's intellectual accomplishments are useless here, his place in both family and civilized society meaningless. He learns to cope, not so much in terms of survival as in finding a new meaning to his life. The Chicago Tribune described Nuni as "an extraordinarily interesting account of a white man's life in a savage island village of the Pacific—the greater part of the novel is concerned with the growth in the narrator, a knowledge of as well as affection for the curiously innocent people." The Dallas Times-Herald wrote: "The two greatest novels of the past decade are William Faulkner's A Fable, and John Howard Griffin's Nuni."

In BEACH BLANKET ZOMBIE, you will sit down to a feast of zombie stories -- seventeen in all. Zombies can rise from the dead for countless reasons. Any horror-movie enthusiastic can tell you that. Sure, a zombie's bite can turn its victim into one of the living dead. But that's not all. In his stories, McLaughlin explores many different ways to bring the dead back to life. As you read these stories, you will learn about zombies created by Internet witches, and discover the bizarre secrets of the isle of Zovemba, also known as Zombie Island. And that's not all. To satisfy your hunger for horror, McLaughlin has added sixteen stories about other types of humanoid monstrosities. Fiends and freaks come in many forms, and some of the very worst attempt to pass for people. In this collection, you will such ghastly, pulse-pounding tales of the macabre as "Beach Blanket Zombie," "Vulture Soup for the Soulless," "The Agony of Claude Bawls," "Tears of the Expressionist Aphrodite," "Cyber-Vengeance of the Internet Witches," "ZOM BEE MOO VEE," "Tell Your Secrets to the Slime," "The Bloody Woman and the Chameleon Man, Also Known as Mom and Dad," "Hello!
