Book The American Speed Shop

Download or read book The American Speed Shop written by Bob McClurg and published by CarTech Inc. This book was released on 2021-02-15 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of hot rodding and performance cars has been well chronicled through the years. Books and magazines have covered the cars, builders, pioneers, engineers, early racers, muscle cars, street racers, etc. Most take a nostalgic and fun look at the cars that many have loved their entire lives. Some even cover the lifestyle, the hobby as it involves people, and the effort, time, and commitment people put into it. It is more than just a hobby to most, and to many, a certain wave of nostalgia comes over them when remembering what the car scene was like "back in the day." The local speed shop is an important element of the nostalgic feeling that people have when fondly remembering their hot rodding youth. Speed shops were not just parts stores, they were a communal gathering place for car guys wanting to talk smart, bench race, and catch up on the local scene, as well as to solicit the expert advice from the owner or staff behind the counter. Here, longtime hot rodder and industry veteran Bob McClurg brings you the story of the era and the culture of speed shops as told through individual shop's histories and compelling vintage photography. He covers the birth of the industry, racing versus hot rodding, mail-order, and advertising wars. You learn about the performance boom of the 1960s and 1970s, lost speed shops as well as survivors, and a overview of the giant mail-order speed shops of today.

Book In the Moon

Download or read book In the Moon written by Alan Holmes and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2004-04-27 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Moon Dans La Lune A memoir of a 1930s childhood in France ABOUT THIS BOOK In the Moon takes you on a vivid and entertaining journey of a boys life in France, of his personal growth, daydreams and enthusiasms. Told mostly in the voice of the growing boy, In the Moon recounts, often with much humor, the many situations and unusual characters in Alains exotic life. Alain is the son of a strong-willed, proactive Belgian mother and a brilliant, tough-minded and emotionally laconic British father, but he is also heavily influenced by a surrogate father, Raimond, their French butler and gardener. Alain has to shape his identity and choices amidst the clashing influences of a class-ridden and multinational milieu. Adding to the tension, he attends six schools over a period of six years. Some of these schools are French, where he faces a harsh and cruel environment, but where learning is nevertheless effective and thorough. In two English-speaking schools, life is more pleasant and has its rewards, but the learning process is subtler and less obvious. Alain spends several summers in a wealthy resort community, followed by three summers in a rural farming community where he learns firsthand about the primitive pleasures and hardships of French peasant life. In each situation, the author provides a richly detailed and lively description of these diverse aspects of the periods life and culture. Included in the telling are many episodes in which his parents own colorful and unconventional life feature prominently. Throughout his memoirs, Holmes tells the story with eccentric charm, sometimes poetic detail, and often with abundant humor and humility. Some readers have likened this absorbing biographical work to Marcel Pagnols La gloire de mon pre, the memoir of the French novelist, playwright, and filmmaker. As in Pagnols book and the 1990 movie based on it, In the Moon is about the adventures, discoveries, and hard-earned lessons of a young life. In the Moon is a light, highly entertaining read and one to which a reader will return with pleasure.

Book A Gift to Imagine

Download or read book A Gift to Imagine written by Scott Ludwig and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2015-08-22 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of my favorite comic strips is Bill Wattersons Calvin and Hobbes. Its based on the adventures and misadventures of six-year old Calvin and his stuffed tiger Hobbes. However, in Calvins mind Hobbes is the real deal, and the interactions between the two of them reflect that of a young boy and his living, breathing tiger friend. Calvins imagination is the stimulus of one of the most beloved, humorous and heart-warming comic strips of all time. Calvin is the antithesis of what is going on in the world today. Creativity and imagination seem to have taken a leave of absence recently. Movies and television shows are constantly being remade. New magazines look a lot like those already found on the newsstands. Television commercials are, for the most part sorely lacking in appeal. Radio commercials? Even worse: Same old song, same old story, same old same old. One of the things I love most about my grandson Krischan is his imagination Ive seen him invent an entire game using only a couple of sticks, a handful of rocks and an ant bed. Ive stood by his side as he saw and battled imaginary creatures so passionately I could have sworn I saw them too. Ive heard him create words for things that make so much more sense to me than the actual word he should be using. The boy has such a vivid imagination I make sure to pay close attention so I dont miss out on what he does or says next. He is, in a word Calvin. Coincidentally my nickname for him since the day he was born is Tiger. I have very single book chronicling the exploits of Calvin and Hobbes. Ive been saving them for Krischan so one day he can appreciate the magic Bill Watterson has created. I cant think of anyone better to pass the books along to, and hope Krischan will be eager to tear into them once he learns how to read. After he reads this book first, of course.

Book Echoes Among the Stars A Short History of the U S Space Program

Download or read book Echoes Among the Stars A Short History of the U S Space Program written by Patrick J. Walsh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emphasizing the importance of the space programme to the scientific, social and cultural history of the last half of the 20th century, this brief history celebrates the almost unimaginable technological leap that the space programme represents, a feat of teamwork, innovation, dedication and mastery unprecedented in the history of mankind. Walsh's narrative begins just before the Mercury programme, covers the original seven astronauts, the Gemini and Apollo programmes, through Skylab and up to the space shuttle. The glories and emotion of space exploration are presented against the backdrop of the Cold War, the presidential administrations of Eisenhower, JFK, LBJ, Nixon, Ford and Carter, and other singificant events in US history. The positive accomplishments of the astronauts are put in context of an increasingly negative domestic situation in the '60s and '70s, the Bay of Pigs, civil rights, assassinations, growing involvement in and dissension about Vietnam, the Watergate scandal, and Nixon's resignation.
