After retirement monumental moments include traveling, forming a band with his grandchildren (Eagleman Band), composing music, writing an autobiography, writing books of poetry, making guitars, painting pictures and recording musical albums.

Download or read book Moment to Monument written by Ladina Bezzola Lambert and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2015-07-31 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do certain works of art make it into the canon while others just enjoy a brief moment of recognition, if at all? How do moments produce monuments, and why are monuments erased from our cultural memory in only a moment? - Taking into account these cultural processes of creating, storing, remembering and forgetting that are omnipresent and have an immense influence on how we perceive artefacts and cultural events, the articles in this collection analyze the phenomenon of cultural production, transmission and reception from various angles, drawing on approaches from both literary and cultural studies. With its transdisciplinary approach, this book uniquely responds to an everyday cultural phenomenon that so far has not received such wide-ranging attention.
Download or read book Towards Creative Imagination in Victorian Literature written by Aleksandra Piasecka and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-06-19 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the concept of the creative imagination in Mid- and Late Victorian England. In these times of transition, as the age of the Industrial Revolution was regarded, aesthetic considerations became involved in the broader debate on the shape of the modern world. Thus, the approach to the artistic imagination was closely connected with the shifting beliefs concerning the essence of beauty, and the role of religion, not to mention attitudes towards nature and society. These aspects defined the aims furthered by painters and poets alike and set the direction for their artistic endeavours. Five people have been chosen as representatives of their time in the discussion about artistic imagination: John Ruskin, William Morris, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Walter Pater and Arthur Symons. Accordingly, the material analysed to recreate the Victorian understanding of the artistic faculties is of different kinds, and embraces not only critical essays (Ruskin, Pater, Symons), but also belles-lettres: short stories (Morris) and poems (Rossetti, Symons). In this manner, two positions complement each other: namely, the views of the theoreticians and those of practitioners. The former attempted to discern and extract the quintessence of the artistic powers on the basis of their observations and reflections, whereas the latter relied on their personal experiences in this respect.

Download or read book Truity written by Abram Allen and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2013-09-16 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the trues of nature, man reasons his truths, the sum of which is TRUITY. Truity creates all, sustains all, and accounts for all. The Adversity of Diversity Law and Truity’s Trinity (subject, function, and object) ground all grammar, reinforce every language, and accommodate all reason. Truity reveals the fundamental law: no subject possesses truth as every subject represents truth. Man has yet to learn this basic rule of grammar. To be born in ignorance is understandable but to stand in ignorance is to insult The Creator.
Download or read book The Architecture of Disability written by David Gissen and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2023-01-24 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A radical critique of architecture that places disability at the heart of the built environment Disability critiques of architecture usually emphasize the need for modification and increased access, but The Architecture of Disability calls for a radical reorientation of this perspective by situating experiences of impairment as a new foundation for the built environment. With its provocative proposal for “the construction of disability,” this book fundamentally reconsiders how we conceive of and experience disability in our world. Stressing the connection between architectural form and the capacities of the human body, David Gissen demonstrates how disability haunts the history and practice of architecture. Examining various historic sites, landscape designs, and urban spaces, he deconstructs the prevailing functionalist approach to accommodating disabled people in architecture and instead asserts that physical capacity is essential to the conception of all designed space. By recontextualizing the history of architecture through the discourse of disability, The Architecture of Disability presents a unique challenge to current modes of architectural practice, theory, and education. Envisioning an architectural design that fully integrates disabled persons into its production, it advocates for looking beyond traditional notions of accessibility and shows how certain incapacities can offer us the means to positively reimagine the roots of architecture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discipleship in the Methodist tradition affirms that there is always more work for God to do in the human heart. A Disciple's Heart attempts to reclaim and, in a sense, reinterpret for today John Wesley’s understanding of this transformation of the heart, which he called “Christian perfection,” with the goal of equipping participants to continue to grow into the likeness of God’s love in Christ. Designed to be used in a small group and, if desired, a congregation-wide emphasis, the Companion Reader, designed for both group members and leaders, provides background and deeper understanding of each week’s theme from a distinctly Wesleyan perspective.

Download or read book The Trauma of Defeat written by James Martin Skidmore and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2005 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book-length study to consider Ricarda Huch's historical-political thought and assess Huch's place within the lively historiographical discourses of the 1920s. One of the most famous writers of her day, Huch (1864-1947) was known for her poetry, fiction, and histories of German Romanticism and the Thirty Years' War. Like many of her generation Huch was shaken by Germany's defeat in the First World War, and this shock motivated her to use her historiography to address Germany's post-war situation. Convinced that the German nation possessed an identity best expressed by the ideals of Romanticism, Huch attributed Germany's decline to the westernization of German political culture; absolutism and centralization had replaced the theoretical perfection of the decentralized early Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. Her Weimar histories of medieval and nineteenth-century Germany urged a defeated and traumatized nation to return to a path that had been abandoned during the Wilhelmine Empire. Topics explored include Huch's use of Nietzschean monumentalism, a comparison with popular historians of the period (e.g. E. Kantorowicz), the echoes of her political thought in her poetry and fiction, and her complex relationship to German nationalism.
Download or read book African Philosophy and the Epistemic Marginalization of Women written by Jonathan Chimakonam and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-20 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the underexplored notion of epistemic marginalization of women in the African intellectual place. Women's issues are still very much neglected by governments, corporate bodies and academics in sub-Saharan Africa. The entrenched traditional world-views which privilege men over women make it difficult for the modern day challenges posed by the neglect of the feminine epistemic perspective, to become obvious. Contributors address these issues from both theoretical and practical perspectives, demonstrating what philosophy could do to ameliorate the epistemic marginalization of women, as well as ways in which African philosphy exacerbates this marginalization. Philosophy is supposed to teach us how to lead the good life in all its ramifications; why is it failing in this duty in Africa where the issue of women’s epistemic vision is concerned? The chapters raise feminist agitations to a new level; beginning from the regular campaigns for various women’s rights and reaching a climax in an epistemic struggle in which the knowledge-controlling power to create, acquire, evaluate, regulate and disseminate is proposed as the last frontier of feminism.
Download or read book Redemption of Faith written by Sailendra Nath Datta and published by PartridgeIndia. This book was released on 2014-06-12 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a book of 88 poems, written in about last eight months by the poet on various themes. These include his varied feelings, ideas, moods, realization and so on. Again, some of the poems read like a series of soliloquy of his mind. The topics are spread over arenas like economic, social, cultural, and emotional spheres. Issues from the national and international fields sometimes haunt him though, he rather consciously avoid speaking on political agenda. His political belief is rather unpronounced in his poems, although he has definitely some areas of conviction. His religious feelings denote that he has a pantheistic turn of mind and his humanistic faith is sometimes forcefully expressed. Certain poems show a similarity with Tagore's belief in the God of Life. The form as well as language of the poems is quite simple; their contents are expressed in a matter-of-fact way, with little scope of ambiguity. It seems the poet does not believe much in experimentation. Like his first book from the Partridge, it is expected that this present volume will also be critically appreciated by the readers of poetry in the international literary arena.
