Book excerpt: 114 color black and white images - this book is ENTIRELY pictorial. From the first instant that I saw the work of Monet and Renoir in an art galley decades ago I was astonished and admired the work so intently that I resolved to create some images that would at least attempt the world of impressionism even though I must describe myself as much more of an 'Ansel Adams' acolyte. The following images are the result. For those who are interested in such things, all the images contained herein were taken with a wide variety of cameras ranging from a Nikon F3 35mm film camera through a Nikon N8008. The author began photography and photo-journalism in early 1963 when he accepted an offer from his local newspaper to write about and photograph sports events at the Arizona high school where he was a junior. After a stint in the service, he had an opportunity to study photography and printing techniques with Bernard Hoffman, a true gentleman and scholar, and one of the earliest staff photographers for Life Magazine. Since that time he has had thousands of photographs and hundreds of articles published by more than 60 national and international periodicals. He was also a contributing editor for one of them for more than ten years. Topics ran the gamut from professional sports, medicine, archeology, and photography to science. After twenty years away from Arizona he returned in 1985 and it has been the base from which all his photographic excursions are launched. Along with many others he has embraced digital photography but can still be seen, from time to time, peering through the ground glass of a large format camera, hoisting a large medium format 6x7, or indeed still using a 35mm film camera. The photographer currently has fine art photography on exhibit at The Center for Fine Arts in Globe, Arizona, and is currently represented by more than ten stock photo agencies where he has more than 13,000 photographs available for commercial use.

Book excerpt: In December 1910, Indian traders John and Louisa Wetherill opened their trading post--with a tent for supplies (and sleeping) and a store counter of boards laid across two barrels. From that modest beginning, Kayenta became the center of Navajo gatherings and exploring expeditions to Rainbow Bridge, Monument Valley, and the grand cliff dwellings in Tsegi Canyon. Soon came a parade of visitors, including authors, painters, and archaeologists, as well as cowboys, miners, traders, and tourists. Book excerpt: Text in English and German. Perhaps the fascination of American landscapes, particularly the deserts is their featurelessness. In Germany, Brandenburg for example, the much plainer landscape lives on in its history. This where the Great Elector won his victory and Napoleon lost a battle. Actual nature unaffected by human beings is hidden under the woodland and heath. The American desert landscape is dominated by grandiose nature with out human intervention. Here the history of the earth is to the fore exercising a particular fascination and anyone who reads it enjoys a double gift. The author travelled around the country photographing the mountains and valleys, the coastline and nature reserves. He also encountered people and writes about American friendliness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Monument Valley's Navajo tribal park is the Southwest's iconic altar of sandstone monoliths. Located 22 miles north of Kayenta, Arizona, the valley spreads out and shares its expansive boundary with southeast Utah. This is the heart of Navajo country. It's also where many classic Western movies were filmed. There are fifteen Sandstone Sketches in this nonfiction composition written for adults, each focusing on a facet of Monument Valley's ancient erosional landscape: the geology and how the sculpted monuments, like gigantic figurines, were fashioned over millions of years; an abstract of the Navajo who settled here centuries ago; a tour of the interior's prominent vistas; a road tour of scenic highlights in this vicinity of the Four Corners region; two backcountry backpacking sojourns's (the author's); evocative poetry describing Monument Valley's changing appearance and atmosphere over a twenty-four-hour period; and, of course, celebrated movies filmed here. Overall, the portrayals suffice as an informative tourist's field guide that can be read from cover to cover or select sketches that appeal to one's interest. As a retired educator and instructor for the likes of the Grand Canyon Field Institute, most of what I did for a living for some forty years entailed teaching various geosciences, natural and human history, environmental sciences, zoology, mathematics, and assorted published writings.
