Download or read book Mighty Monty written by Johanna Hurwitz and published by Candlewick Press. This book was released on 2013-08-06 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monty is mighty enough to take karate in a funny, true-to-life sequel with surefire appeal for early chapter-book readers. (Ages 5-7) Monty Gerald Morris may be small and shy, but he's a mighty smart kid and an A+ reader. In an endearing follow-up to Mostly Monty, the quiet first-grader continues to come into his own -- playing the part of a tree in a comically miscued school play, sharing his enthusiasm for ants at an outdoor birthday party, even signing up for karate class despite his asthma. Once again, Johanna Hurwitz finds gentle humor in everyday situations and offers a charming portrayal of a likable character many young readers will relate to.

Book Monty s Rhine Adventure

Download or read book Monty s Rhine Adventure written by Patrick Delaforce and published by Fonthill Media. This book was released on 2014-03-24 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second volume, but the last to be published of a trilogy - the other volumes being Smashing the Atlantic Wall and The Battle of the Bulge. Monty's Rhine Adventure begins immediately after the Normandy invasion with the euphoria surrounding the belief that the war would soon be won. However, it was not to be as easy Monty hoped. The book covers the difficult next few months as the Allies slogged through France and Belgium fighting stern and skilled Nazi resistance. However, the centrepiece of Monty's Rhine Adventure is Operation Market garden - Monty's bold plan to cut through the German defences via the eight bridges which spanned the Dutch/German border. The book deals with the plan, its execution and its aftermath in rigorous detail. Had Market Garden gone to plan, it might have led to the overall defeat of the Third Reich before the end of 1944. As it was, it was the Russians that entered Berlin first in May 1945. Nonetheless, this period remains one of the boldest and most exciting of the Second World War.

For years, Britain's much-loved gardener Monty Don has been leading us down all kinds of garden paths to show us why green spaces are vital to our wellbeing and culture. Now, he travels across America with celebrated photographer Derry Moore to trace the fascinating histories of outdoor spaces which epitomize or redefine the American garden. In the book, which complements the BBC television series, they look at a variety of gardens and outdoor spaces at the center of American history including the slave garden at Thomas Jefferson's Monticello estate, Longwood Gardens in Delaware, and Middleton Place in South Carolina. Together, they visit verdant oases designed by modernist architects such as Richard Neutra. They delve into urban outdoor spaces, looking at New York City's Central Park, Lurie Garden at the southern end of Millennium Park in Chicago, and the Seattle Spheres. Derry Moore gives his unique perspective on gardens across the United States, including several not featured in the TV series. These include unpublished photographs of Bob Hope's Palm Springs home and garden of renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Featuring luscious photography and Don's engaging commentary, this book will leave you with a richer understanding of how America's most important gardens came to be designed.

Book Johnnie Johnson s Great Adventure

Download or read book Johnnie Johnson s Great Adventure written by Dilip Sarkar and published by Pen and Sword Aviation. This book was released on 2020-12-14 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The World War II fighter Ace’s previously unpublished draft—an account of the “Long Trek” from Normandy into the heart of the Third Reich itself. Having published two of his own books, Wing Leader and The Circle of Air Fighting, Air Vice-Marshal Johnnie Johnson co-authored several more with another fighter ace, namely Wing Commander P.B. “Laddie” Lucas. In 1997, the “AVM” suggested to his friend, the prolific author Dilip Sarkar, that the pair should collaborate on The Great Adventure. “Greycap Leader” was to produce a draft, after which Dilip would add the historical detail and comment. Sadly, the project was unfulfilled, because Johnnie became ill and passed away, aged eighty-five, in 2001. Years later, Johnnie’s eldest son, Chris, discovered the manuscript among his august father’s papers. In order to keep Johnnie’s memory evergreen, Chris turned to Dilip to finally see the project through to its conclusion. In this book Johnnie revisits certain aspects of his wartime service, including the development of tactical air cooperation with ground forces; his time as a Canadian wing leader in 1943, when the Spitfire Mk IX at last outclassed the Fw 190; and details his involvement in some of the most important battles of the defeat of Nazi Germany, including Operation Overlord and the D-Day landings in 1944, Operation Market Garden and the airborne assault at Arnhem, and the Rhine Crossings, throughout all of which Johnnie also commanded Canadian wings. Johnnie Johnson’s Great Adventure “brings to life the man of the book in such an interesting and heroic manner . . . if it wasn’t for these brave heroes we might not have won the war” (UK Historian).

Book Monty

Download or read book Monty written by Alistair Horne and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In Monty: The Lonely Leader, 1944-1945 Alistair Horne, one of England's most brilliant military historians, has collaborated with Montgomery's only son to provide a candid and fascinating intimate profile of the legendary general. A controversial and enigmatic Allied leader during World War II, Bernard Law Montgomery is probably best known for his victory over Rommel at El Alamein in North Africa, for which he was later knighted, and for the major role he played in the subsequent invasions of Italy, France, and Germany." "For this study Horne and David Montgomery have focused primarily in the last twelve months of the war, beginning with the invasion of Normandy in June 1944 and ending with Germany's surrender the following May. The authors followed Montgomery's route across Europe, visiting every spot where he located his headquarters. They talked to the surviving members of the small group of young aides who served under Monty; they drew on previously unpublished letters and diaries; and they referred to the writings of Monty's peers and to official reports. Finally they analyze Monty's military decisions, criticisms that he was overly cautious and slow, and the arrogance and prickly personality that so alienated many of his American and British colleagues." "Monty: The Lonely Leader, 1944-1945 goes a long way toward explaining not only Monty's approach to war but why and when it succeeded or failed."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
