Some stories have a tint of mystery, others a touch of Montserrat's humor, but all generally tell tales of Montserrat with a Caribbean flavor. There are three poems which relate to the volcano and the author's prayerful hope that Montserrat will rise again from the tons of magma that have buried so many of its picturesque villages, including its capital, the once thriving Plymouth. The author's Village, Kinsale, exists no more. Unfortunately, Montserrat was almost anonymous before its volcanic eruptions. Now, it is an open laboratory for volcanologists, a vacation haven for videographers, and curiosity seekers. They know Montserrat as a gray land drooping under the weight of pyroclastic flow, but the author remembers it as The Emerald Isle of the Caribbean, where the serrated mountains stood like green giants in the Caribbean scenery.

The boy passed from hand to hand and after a short time came to Virginia to a plantation owner, who in turn sold him to an English naval officer named Henry Pascal. As a personal servant, he participated in the Seven Years' War in America from 1757 to 1762. In 1762 he was resold to a plantation owner and returned to the West Indies. Here he was able to buy his own freedom, but remained with his former slave owner, the Quaker Robert King. In 1773, he participated in an exploratory voyage to the Arctic. Equiano was slave to a captain in the Royal Navy, and later to a Quaker merchant, and he vividly depicts the appalling treatment of enslaved people at sea and on land. He takes part in naval engagements, is shipwrecked, and has other exciting adventures on his travels to the Caribbean, America, and the Arctic. Equiano claimed his own freedom and became an important abolitionist, but his Narrative is much more than merely a political pamphlet. The most important African autobiography of the eighteenth century, it has achieved an increasingly central position among the century's great works of literature. The introduction to this edition surveys recent debates about Equiano's birthplace and identity, and considers his campaigning role and literary achievements.
