Book excerpt: Excerpt from Montrose, and Other Biographical Sketches Of all these grants we need mention in this chapter only two; namely, the one made to Sir William Alexander (afterward Earl of Stirling) by James the First, in 1621, Confirmed by Charles the First in 1625; in which grant he was empowered to institute an order of Knights, under the title of Baronets of Nova Scotia; and that one by the French government to the Company of New France, in 1627. This company, founded by Cardinal Richelieu, had great powers and privileges, and on its part agreed to colonize the new country rapidly, and on a large scale to establish and maintain the Roman Catholic religion there, and to exclude Huguenots and all foreigners. The two parties, proceeding to take possession of the country under these grants, soon came in collision. In the year 1627 - 8, an English fleet, under command of Sir David Kirk, (or Kertch, ) fitted out by himself, in conjunction with Sir William Alexander, arrived at the mouth of the St. Law rence River, in Canada, and captured there eighteen French transport ships, commanded by M. De Lock man and M. De la Tour. These ships Sir David made prize of but failing this time in his attempt on Que bec, he returned to England, carrying thither M. De la tour-claude de la Tour, father of that other La Tour whose quarrels and troubles in Acadia vexed and perplexed the fathers of New England. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Montrose, and Other Biographical Sketches In the seventeenth century the tract of country called then, by the French, Acadia, by the English, Nova Scotia, was a debatable land. By right of discovery it belonged, beyond doubt, to the English; but the French made the earliest and most successful settlements on the coast. Without any very deep-seated faith, or fixed principles of action, the French people easily accommodate themselves to different modes of life; and their religious worship, the Catholic, which, in its devotion to outward forms and symbols, had become a kind of idolatry, found ready acceptance with the rude aborigines of North America. Little images of the Saviour, the Virgin Mary, the saints - these, and the simple cross, were of better workmanship, and altogether prettier, than the rude things of the same kind with which the savages had long been familiar; and they had, moreover, the same kind of virtues. Book The Life and Times of Montrose

Download or read book The Life and Times of Montrose written by Mark Napier and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Times of Montrose: Illustrated From Original Manuscripts, Including Family Papers Now First Published From the Montrose Charter-Chest and Other Private Repositories Two years ago I published a work entitled "Montrose and the Covenanters," with a view not merely to illustrate the life of the Great Marques, bat in order to lay before each readers as are curious in historical antiquities, various original documents, which seemed to shed some new lights upon the eventful and interesting period during which he bore so conspicuous a part. The object of that performance is so far attained, that even those who are more desirous to perpetuate calumnies against the hero than to see him exonerated, must find their invectives restrained by an exposure of the iniquities of the Covenant, not less than by an illustration of the high principles and honourable feelings upon which Montrose acted in opposition to it. But it has, nevertheless, been suggested that a Life of this great man, deduced from the original materials, and compressed into a single volume of a more popular cast, would be acceptable to the public. While in the progress of composing this smaller work, I have been so fortunate as to acquire additional materials which cannot fail to recommend it to all who are not contented to take their ideas of public characters, or derive their knowledge of historical events, from the eulogies of biographers or the party spirit of historians. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Marquis of Montrose IN the following pages I have not attempted to write a complete biography of Montrose, but to tell simply and directly the story of a career which must rank among the marvels of our history, and to provide materials for the understanding of a mind and char acter which seem to me in a high degree worthy of the attention of modern readers. Hence I have passed rapidly over his early years, and told in detail only the incidents from his first raising of the Royal Standard in Scotland till his death. To avoid clog ging the text, all references to the voluminous author ities and discussions of controversial points have been relegated to the notes at the end of the book. Every student of Montrose is in debt to a host of pre decessors, and due acknowledgment will be found in the bibliographical note on page 295. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Marquess: Life and Times of Archibald, 8th Earl, and 1st and Only Marquess of Argyll, 1607 1661 The title of The Great Marquess is one which has been applied both to the subject of the following biography and to his rival Montrose. The title in question has not been conferred upon either of them by the general consent of their countrymen, for each has had a large circle of enemies and detractors, and accordingly neither of them can claim any definite property in it. Those, therefore, who may have been accustomed to think of Montrose as The Great Marquess, and have now this volume in their hands, are asked to read it with an open mind, and only to come to a final decision as to whether the claim put forward for Argyll's right to the title is valid after they have perused the story of his life. N 0 one can write of either of the two Marquesses without forming and expressing some Opinion of the other, and liking for the one is generally accompanied by dislike of the other. As many lives have been written of Montrose, and as no regular biography of Argyll, beyond articles in biographical dictionaries, has been attempted before our own, we freely admit that in many minds a certain prejudice exists against him, which we hope to be able to dispel. Yet, though we seek to vindicate Argyll's right to the high place which he occupies in the estimation of a very large proportion of his fellow-countrymen, we do not desire to exalt his fame by seeking to depreciate Montrose. In the very abundant literature which deals with the career of the latter we regret to notice what seems to us the fault which we have sought to avoid. Two striking instances of it we may be allowed to refer to more particularly. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
