Book Chaos In Nature Second Edition

Download or read book Chaos In Nature Second Edition written by Christophe Letellier and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2019-04-26 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the history of chaos theory, from celestial mechanics (three-body problem) to electronics and meteorology. Many illustrative examples of chaotic behaviors exist in various contexts found in nature (chemistry, astrophysics, biomedicine). This book includes the most popular systems from chaos theory (Lorenz, Rössler, van der Pol, Duffing, logistic map, Lozi map, Hénon map etc.) and introduces many other systems, some of them very rarely discussed in textbooks as well as in scientific papers. The contents are formulated with an original approach as compared to other books on chaos theory.

Book Catalog of Unconfirmed Comets Volume 1

Download or read book Catalog of Unconfirmed Comets Volume 1 written by Gary W. Kronk and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-05-09 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This catalog is the first in-depth investigation of comets that were reported since the 17th century, but not confirmed and subsequently lost. Volume I of this two-volume work covers objects observed between 1600 and 1899, a period that was dominated by visual observations and was experiencing a rapid evolution in science. The book uniquely combines the history and culture of comet hunting and discovery with modern tools of orbital mechanics to present a wholesome catalog of unconfirmed and suspected comets. Each case includes a presentation of the observations, a discussion about the observer (when possible), consideration of the historic context, and a conclusion as to the nature of the object. In most cases, the book presents material from original sources, including some never before published that were acquired from observatories, libraries, and historical societies around the world. Although some of these unconfirmed comets turned out to be misidentifications of planets or star clusters, fabrications, or poor observations of comets that were already being observed, the Authors did identify many objects that were likely real comets. In some cases, the Authors were even able to derive orbits for the first time. These observations may be valuable in the future, as they could prove to be observations of periodic comets still to be discovered.

Download or read book Jacobus Cornelius Kapteyn written by Pieter C. van der Kruit and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-18 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jacobus C. Kapteyn (1851-1922) was a Dutch astronomer who contributed heavily to major catalogs of star positions, such as the Cape Photographic Durchmusterung and the Harvard-Groningen Durchmusterung, and arranged extensive international collaboration through his Plan of Selected Areas. He contributed to the establishment of statistical astronomy and structure and dynamics of the Sidereal System. All aspects of Kapteyn’s life are discussed, from his birth in Barneveld, the Netherlands, to his death in Amsterdam, and his entire resume of scientific achievements in between. Kapteyn had some conflicts with others in his field, especially after the world became divided on how to handle scientific contributions from Germany post-World War I. Both Kapteyn's struggles and achievements are written against the backdrop of both the historical context of the world at that time as well as the scientific one.

Book Origins of Life Volume II

Download or read book Origins of Life Volume II written by Vladivoj Valkovic and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-09-27 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Origins of Life Volume II, life and its origin are inspected from traditional and unexpected points of view. The book takes an interdisciplinary approach, discussing astrobiology; chemical evolution; and how the Universe accommodates life, molecular biology, and philosophy. It is an open-minded approach, fully referenced throughout, and each chapter includes a further reading section for anyone wishing to learn more about that perspective on the origins of life. First, everything started, with the Big Bang, from nothing. It appears now that everything was aiming toward our existence, some 13.75 × 109 years later, being capable of understanding it all. We did it using powerful tools: science, philosophy, and religion. Although we appreciate the contributions made by philosophy and religion, our contemplations and doubts are based on the plentiful scientific evidence provided. The reader will be guided from make-up of the "life stage" (Universe), tools and materials needed for the living matter to be formed in the small part of the Universe, which one could call Human Neighborhood, or the Local Universe. It contains galaxies, galaxy clusters, and voids, and the Milky Way and its satellites influencing each other during this time span. The book is easy to read, accompanied by numerous references; it could be of use to the expert in the field as well as for curious minds with a scientific, philosophical, or religious background.

Book Ancient Astronomical Observations and the Study of the Moon s Motion 1691 1757

Download or read book Ancient Astronomical Observations and the Study of the Moon s Motion 1691 1757 written by John M. Steele and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-02-17 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discovery of a gradual acceleration in the moon’s mean motion by Edmond Halley in the last decade of the seventeenth century led to a revival of interest in reports of astronomical observations from antiquity. These observations provided the only means to study the moon’s ‘secular acceleration’, as this newly-discovered acceleration became known. This book contains the first detailed study of the use of ancient and medieval astronomical observations in order to investigate the moon’s secular acceleration from its discovery by Halley to the establishment of the magnitude of the acceleration by Richard Dunthorne, Tobias Mayer and Jérôme Lalande in the 1740s and 1750s. Making extensive use of previously unstudied manuscripts, this work shows how different astronomers used the same small body of preserved ancient observations in different ways in their work on the secular acceleration. In addition, this work looks at the wider context of the study of the moon’s secular acceleration, including its use in debates of biblical chronology, whether the heavens were made up of æther, and the use of astronomy in determining geographical longitude. It also discusses wider issues of the perceptions and knowledge of ancient and medieval astronomy in the early-modern period. This book will be of interest to historians of astronomy, astronomers and historians of the ancient world.
