Download or read book Planetary Habitability And Stellar Activity written by Arnold Hanslmeier and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2018-07-18 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The whole text is written in a clear and light scientific style. It is fully referenced to scientific publications and supported by numerous figures, mainly in full colour … The present book can be recommended to any interested reader with a background in physics and/or astronomy, in particular to undergraduate and graduate students within astronomy and related fields, possibly being also of interest to scientists in (evolutionary) biology.'Contemporary PhysicsThe search for exoplanets and habitable objects in general is one of the fastest growing and most prominent fields in modern astrophysics. This book provides an overview on habitability on exoplanets. Habitability is strongly dependent on stellar activity. Therefore, space weather effects on objects in the solar system as well as on exoplanets are discussed. The concept of the book is to introduce the topics and then discuss actual scientific papers so that the interested reader has access to most recent research. Therefore the book is valuable to undergraduate students as well as to graduate students and researchers.
Download or read book Scale Transitions As Foundations Of Physics written by Ioan Merches and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2021-02-04 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scale transitions are essential to physical knowledge. The book describes the history of essential moments of physics, viewed as necessary consequences of the unavoidable process of scale transition, and provides the mathematical techniques for the construction of a theoretical physics founded on scale transition. The indispensable mathematical technique is analyticity, helping in the construction of space coordinate systems. The indispensable theoretical technique from physical point of view is the affine theory of surfaces. The connection between the two techniques is provided by a duality in defining the physical properties.

Download or read book St Helena Ascension and Tristan Da Cunha written by Alan Edwin Day and published by Oxford, England : Clio Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These three South Atlantic British dependent territories were all discovered by Portuguese seamen in the early sixteenth century. Following in the wake of the Portuguese, English and Dutch Eastindia men found the island a convenient port of call on the long haul home. After a brief struggle, St. Helena was tinder the direct rule of the East India Company from 1673 to 1834 when it became a Crown Colony. It is best known as the place f exile of Napoleon Bonaparte from 1815 to his death in 1821. With the opening of the Suez Canal, and the introduction of steamships, St. Helena's economy collapsed and the island has remained a quiet backwater ever since. Ascension and Tristan da Cunha were both occupied by a British garrison when Napoleon arrived on St. Helena in order to prevent any attempt at rescue. Ascension remained tinder Admiralty control as 'a stone frigate' until 1922 when it became a dependency of St. Helena. During the Second World War an American air base was constructed which was heavily used as a staging post for the British task force en route to recover the Falkland Islands in the 1982 South Atlantic War. The base continues to provide an essential link in the logistical support of the British garrison on the Falklands. A small number of families eked out a precarious and isolated existence on Tristan from 1826 to 1961 when its volcano, thought to be long extinct, suddenly erupted causing the islanders to be evacuated to England. There was a general amazement when most of them elected to return to their hard life in 1962. Today, they enjoy six calls a year by South African vessels from Cape Town in connection with the crawfish industry on the island, and an annual visitby a ship from England.

Download or read book Selected Papers Volume 1 written by Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1989-04-28 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first of six volumes collecting significant papers of the distinguished astrophysicist and Nobel laureate S. Chandrasekhar. His work is notable for its breadth as well as for its brilliance; his practice has been to change his focus from time to time to pursue new areas of research. The result has been a prolific career full of discoveries and insights, some of which are only now being fully appreciated. Chandrasekhar has selected papers that trace the development of his ideas and that present aspects of his work not fully covered in the books he has periodically published to summarize his research in each area. Volume 1, Stellar Structure and Stellar Atmospheres, covers primarily the period 1930-40 and includes early papers on the theory of white dwarfs. In the Preface, Chandrasekhar explains the criteria for selection and provides historical background. Each subsequent volume will include a foreword by an authority on the topics covered.
