Book The Death and Life of Monterey Bay

Download or read book The Death and Life of Monterey Bay written by Stephen R Palumbi and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2011-01-26 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anyone who has ever stood on the shores of Monterey Bay, watching the rolling ocean waves and frolicking otters, knows it is a unique place. But even residents on this idyllic California coast may not realize its full history. Monterey began as a natural paradise, but became the poster child for industrial devastation in John Steinbeck’s Cannery Row,and is now one of the most celebrated shorelines in the world. It is a remarkable story of life, death, and revival—told here for the first time in all its stunning color and bleak grays. The Death and Life of Monterey Bay begins in the eighteenth century when Spanish and French explorers encountered a rocky shoreline brimming with life—raucous sea birds, abundant sea otters, barking sea lions, halibut the size of wagon wheels, waters thick with whales. A century and a half later, many of the sea creatures had disappeared, replaced by sardine canneries that sickened residents with their stench but kept the money flowing. When the fish ran out and the climate turned, the factories emptied and the community crumbled. But today, both Monterey’s economy and wildlife are resplendent. How did it happen? The answer is deceptively simple: through the extraordinary acts of ordinary people. The Death and Life of Monterey Bay is the biography of a place, but also of the residents who reclaimed it. Monterey is thriving because of an eccentric mayor who wasn’t afraid to use pistols, axes, or the force of law to protect her coasts. It is because of fishermen who love their livelihood, scientists who are fascinated by the sea’s mysteries, and philanthropists and community leaders willing to invest in a world-class aquarium. The shores of Monterey Bay revived because of human passion—passion that enlivens every page of this hopeful book.

Book Apparent Surface Currents Over the Monterey Submarine Canyon Measured by the Method of Towed Electrodes

Download or read book Apparent Surface Currents Over the Monterey Submarine Canyon Measured by the Method of Towed Electrodes written by Karl Arthur Mahumed and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Five data cruises were taken on board R/V ACANIA to study the effect on the Geomagnetic Electrokinetograph (GEK) of various environmental factors, including wings, tides, and internal waves, over the Monterey Submarine Canyon. An in situ current meter was used successfully on one occasion to obtain data to establish a k-factor for the GEK in the Submarine Canyon, and to directly measure the particle velocities of internal waves. The observed surface currents measured with the GEK all exhibited little or no correlation with winds and tides. The flows were all generally southerly; their averages agreed with previous measurements made with the GEK. This direction of flow was opposite to the generalizations of Scott and possibly agreed with those of Pirie, depending upon the placement of one of his eddies. The k-factor for the GEK could not be determined because currents measured directly in the thermocline were found to be not correlated with the GEK measurements. However, the average current speeds were in reasonable agreement with currents measured at other times in Monterey Bay, leading to the conclusion that k cannot be much greater than the assumed value of 1.0. Book The Abalone King of Monterey Pop Ernest Doelter Pioneering Japanese Fishermen the Culinary Classic that Saved an Industry

Download or read book The Abalone King of Monterey Pop Ernest Doelter Pioneering Japanese Fishermen the Culinary Classic that Saved an Industry written by Tim Thomas and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2014-05-06 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1908, "Pop" Ernest Doelter was crowned the Abalone King. In the kitchen of his Alvarado Street restaurant in Monterey, California, Pop transformed rubbery gastropods into an epicurean delight. Working with red abalone collected by Monterey's community of Japanese divers, Pop dipped the foot in egg wash, added a secret ingredient, rolled it in cracker crumbs and cooked it quickly in olive oil. Tourists and celebrities alike sat down at Pop's table to enjoy his famous recipe, and eventually, he shipped steaks on ice to hotels and restaurants throughout the state. Pull up a chair as historian Tim Thomas recounts the story of an innovative restaurateur and a group of pioneering fishermen who turned underappreciated mollusks into the talk of the 1915 San Francisco World's Fair.
