Book Monte Carlo Particle Transport Capability for Inertial Confinement Fusion Applications

Download or read book Monte Carlo Particle Transport Capability for Inertial Confinement Fusion Applications written by L. M. Stuart and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A time-dependent massively-parallel Monte Carlo particle transport calculational module (ParticleMC) for inertial confinement fusion (ICF) applications is described. The ParticleMC package is designed with the long-term goal of transporting neutrons, charged particles, and gamma rays created during the simulation of ICF targets and surrounding materials, although currently the package treats neutrons and gamma rays. Neutrons created during thermonuclear burn provide a source of neutrons to the ParticleMC package. Other user-defined sources of particles are also available. The module is used within the context of a hydrodynamics client code, and the particle tracking is performed on the same computational mesh as used in the broader simulation. The module uses domain-decomposition and the MPI message passing interface to achieve parallel scaling for large numbers of computational cells. The Doppler effects of bulk hydrodynamic motion and the thermal effects due to the high temperatures encountered in ICF plasmas are directly included in the simulation. Numerical results for a three-dimensional benchmark test problem are presented in 3D XYZ geometry as a verification of the basic transport capability. In the full paper, additional numerical results including a prototype ICF simulation will be presented.

To present a book which discusses the same topics in the three levels known from the literature and gives us useful information for both beginners and experienced readers. It lists both well-established old techniques and also newest findings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mathematical technique of Monte Carlo, as applied to the transport of sub-atomic particles, has been described in numerous reports and books since its formal development in the 1940s. Most of these instructional efforts have been directed either at the mathematical basis of the technique or at its practical application as embodied in the several large, formal computer codes available for performing Monte Carlo transport calculations. This book attempts to fill what appears to be a gap in this Monte Carlo literature between the mathematics and the software. Thus, while the mathematical basis for Monte Carlo transport is covered in some detail, emphasis is placed on the application of the technique to the solution of practical radiation transport problems. This is done by using the PC as the basic teaching tool. This book assumes the reader has a knowledge of integral calculus, neutron transport theory, and Fortran programming. It also assumes the reader has available a PC with a Fortran compiler. Any PC of reasonable size should be adequate to reproduce the examples or solve the exercises contained herein. The authors believe it is important for the reader to execute these examples and exercises, and by doing so to become accomplished at preparing appropriate software for solving radiation transport problems using Monte Carlo. The step from the software described in this book to the use of production Monte Carlo codes should be straightforward.

Book Overview and Applications of the Monte Carlo Radiation Transport Kit at LLNL

Download or read book Overview and Applications of the Monte Carlo Radiation Transport Kit at LLNL written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern Monte Carlo radiation transport codes can be applied to model most applications of radiation, from optical to TeV photons, from thermal neutrons to heavy ions. Simulations can include any desired level of detail in three-dimensional geometries using the right level of detail in the reaction physics. The technology areas to which we have applied these codes include medical applications, defense, safety and security programs, nuclear safeguards and industrial and research system design and control. The main reason such applications are interesting is that by using these tools substantial savings of time and effort (i.e. money) can be realized. In addition it is possible to separate out and investigate computationally effects which can not be isolated and studied in experiments. In model calculations, just as in real life, one must take care in order to get the correct answer to the right question. Advancing computing technology allows extensions of Monte Carlo applications in two directions. First, as computers become more powerful more problems can be accurately modeled. Second, as computing power becomes cheaper Monte Carlo methods become accessible more widely. An overview of the set of Monte Carlo radiation transport tools in use a LLNL will be presented along with a few examples of applications and future directions.

Book Monte Carlo Modeling of Non local Electron Conduction in High Energy Density Plasmas

Download or read book Monte Carlo Modeling of Non local Electron Conduction in High Energy Density Plasmas written by Jeffrey John Chenhall and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The implicit SNB (iSNB) non-local multigroup thermal electron conduction method of Schurtz et. al. [Phys. Plasmas 7, 4238 (2000)] and Cao et. al. [Phys. Plasmas 22, 082308 (2015)] is adapted into an electron thermal transport Monte Carlo (ETTMC) transport method to better model higher order angular and long mean free path non-local effects. The ETTMC model is used to simulate the electron thermal transport within inertial confinement fusion (ICF) type problems. The new model aims to improve upon the currently used iSNB, in particular by using finite particle ranges in comparison to the exponential solution of a diffusion method and by improved higher order angular modeling. The new method has been implemented in the 1D LILAC and 2D DRACO multiphysics production codes developed by the University of Rochester Laboratory for Laser Energetics. The ETTMC model is compared to iSNB for several direct drive ICF type simulations: Omega shot 60303 a shock timing experiment, Omega shot 59529 a shock timing experiment, Omega shot 68951 a cryogenic target implosion and a NIF polar direct drive phase plate design. Overall, the ETTMC method performs at least as well as the iSNB method and predicts lower preheating ahead of the shock fronts. This research was supported by University of Rochester Laboratory for Laser Energetics, Sandia National Laboratories and the University of Wisconsin-Madison Foundation.

Book Accelerating Monte Carlo Particle Transport with Adaptively Generated Importance Maps

Download or read book Accelerating Monte Carlo Particle Transport with Adaptively Generated Importance Maps written by Michel Nowak and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monte Carlo methods are a reference asset for the study of radiation transport in shielding problems. Their use naturally implies the sampling of rare events and needs to be tackled with variance reduction methods. These methods require the definition of an importance function/map. The aim of this study is to propose an adaptivestrategy for the generation of such importance maps during the Montne Carlo simulation. The work was performed within TRIPOLI-4®, a Monte Carlo transport code developped at the nuclear energy division of CEA in Saclay, France. The core of this PhD thesis is the implementation of a forward-weighted adjoint score that relies on the trajectories sampled with Adaptive Multilevel Splitting, a robust variance reduction method. It was validated with the integration of a deterministic module in TRIPOLI-4®. Three strategies were proposed for the reintegrationof this score as an importance map and accelerations were observed. Two of these strategies assess the convergence of the adjoint score during exploitation phases by evalutating the figure of merit yielded by the use of the current adjoint score. Finally, the smoothing of the importance map with machine learning algorithms concludes this work with a special focus on Kernel Density Estimators.
