Book Monte Carlo Calculations of the Scattering of 450 550 and 650 Nm Wavelength Light in Model Atmospheres for Point Isotropic Sources

Download or read book Monte Carlo Calculations of the Scattering of 450 550 and 650 Nm Wavelength Light in Model Atmospheres for Point Isotropic Sources written by Michael B. Wells and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The FLARE Monte Carlo procedure, which computes the transport of monochromatic light emitted by either point or plane-parallel sources in a plane atmosphere, was made operational. The FLARE procedure treats problems involving light transport in atmospheres where the scattering and absorption processes vary with altitude. The FLARE procedure was used to compute the scattered and direct intensities as a function of direction and horizontal range at receiver altitudes of 0, 1, 2, 5, and 10 km. Problems were run for 550 nm wavelength point isotropic sources at 1, 2, 5, 20 and 80 km altitude in a model atmosphere with a ground level meteorological range of 10 km. Calculations were made for the 550 nm wavelength point isotropic source at 2 km altitude in model atmospheres with ground level meteorological ranges of 3, 10, 25, and 50 km. Additional calculations were also performed for 450, 550, and 650 nm wavelength point isotropic sources at 2 km altitude in the model atmosphere with a 10 km ground level meteorological range. Book Monte Carlo Studies on the Time Dependent Transport of Optical and Infrared Radiation in the Atmosphere Volume II Thermal Radiation Transport

Download or read book Monte Carlo Studies on the Time Dependent Transport of Optical and Infrared Radiation in the Atmosphere Volume II Thermal Radiation Transport written by Dave G. Collins and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes modifications that were made to the POLO procedures to treat infrared absorption by the gaseous molecules in the atmosphere. Also described are the results of studies performed with the POLO procedure to compute time-dependent scattered light fluxes at satellite receivers for (1) 0.4278-, 0.75-, and 1.07-micrometer wavelength anisotropic point sources; (2) 0.4278-, 0.5-, 0.6-, 0.75-, and 1.07-micrometer wavelength point isotropic sources in a 40-km meteorological range atmosphere; (3) point isotropic sources emitting in the 2.7-micrometer wavelength band; and (4) point isotropic 0.4278-, 0.75-, and 1.07-micrometer wavelength sources in model atmospheres containing a cloud layer. Three computer codes are described which were developed for convoluting the POLO-calculated wavelength- and time-dependent atmospheric scattering data with wavelength- and time-dependent source data for thermal radiation sources. A calculational method is described that can be used to compute the Legendre polynomial coefficients required in discrete ordinates codes for defining the phase function for light scattering by aerosols and cloud particles.

Book Monte Carlo Calculations of the Transmission of Thermal Radiation from Nuclear Detonations in Model Atmospheres

Download or read book Monte Carlo Calculations of the Transmission of Thermal Radiation from Nuclear Detonations in Model Atmospheres written by M. B. Wells and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monte Carlo calculations for monochromatic point isotropic sources were performed to determine the direct and scattered fluxes incident on flat plate receivers oriented so as to be (1) perpendicular to the source-receiver direction, (2) parallel to the ground surface, and (3) perpendicular to the ground surface. The receiver surface was always facing the point isotropic source. The calculations were run for 13 monochromatic wavelengths between 0.3 microns and 4.0 microns, source altitudes of 1, 9 and 50 km, a receiver altitude of 6 m, and reciever horizontal range from 9 to 90 km. The transmission calculations for each of the receiver orientations were performed for model atmospheres designed to represent a morning tropical atmosphere and an afternoon tropical atmosphere. Transmission calculations for a receiver oriented normal to the source-receiver axis were also performed for summer, winter and winter inversion midlatitude atmospheres, and arctic atmosphere. For the 1 km source altitude in the morning and afternoon tropical atmospheres, transmission calculations were performed for cases where these atmospheres contained a cloud layer with the bottom of the cloud layer being at an altitude of either 1.5 km or 5.5 km. Book Monte Carlo Calculations in Spherical shell Atmospheres

Download or read book Monte Carlo Calculations in Spherical shell Atmospheres written by W. G. Blättner and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The FLASH procedure was modified so that a printout of both the scattered intensity and the polarization parameters could be obtained as a function of the receiver polar and azimuthal angles. Calculations were run with FLASH for Rayleigh atmospheres with optical thicknesses of 0.25 and 1.0 for comparison with the data reported by Coulson, Dave and Sekera, and for a homogeneous Mie-Rayleigh atmosphere with a turbidity factor of 2 for comparison with the data reported by Bullrich, Eschelbach, et al. The FLASH procedure was modified so as to incorporate several methods of improving the accuracy of both single and higher order scattering calculations for twilight studies. The procedure was then used in a study to determine the effect of several assumed dust profiles on both the single and multiple scattered radiation under twilight illumination for 0.5 and 0.7 micrometer wavelength light. Results are presented which show how the color ratio (I(Lambda=0.7 micrometer)/I(Lambda=0.5 micrometer)) varies with the sun depression angle for a number of different dust profiles. (Author).

Book The Monte Carlo Methods in Atmospheric Optics

Download or read book The Monte Carlo Methods in Atmospheric Optics written by G.I. Marchuk and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-10-05 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is devoted to urgent questions of the theory and applications of the Monte Carlo method for solving problems of atmospheric optics and hydrooptics. The importance of these problems has grown because of the increas ing need to interpret optical observations, and to estimate radiative balance precisely for weather forecasting. Inhomogeneity and sphericity of the atmos phere, absorption in atmospheric layers, multiple scattering and polarization of light, all create difficulties in solving these problems by traditional methods of computational mathematics. Particular difficulty arises when one must solve nonstationary problems of the theory of transfer of narrow beams that are connected with the estimation of spatial location and time characteristics of the radiation field. The most universal method for solving those problems is the Monte Carlo method, which is a numerical simulation of the radiative-transfer process. This process can be regarded as a Markov chain of photon collisions in a medium, which result in scattering or absorption. The Monte Carlo tech nique consists in computational simulation of that chain and in constructing statistical estimates of the desired functionals. The authors of this book have contributed to the development of mathemati cal methods of simulation and to the interpretation of optical observations. A series of general method using Monte Carlo techniques has been developed. The present book includes theories and algorithms of simulation. Numerical results corroborate the possibilities and give an impressive prospect of the applications of Monte Carlo methods.
