Book excerpt: Excerpt from Montana Wild Life, Vol. 1: The Official Publication of the State Fish and Game Commission; November, 1928 Motion by Mr. Marlowe: I move that all persons, firms, corporations or associatio_ns engaged in the business of fur farming or game farming within the State of Montana, operating under the provisions of Section 3777 of the Revised Codes of Montana, be required to take out a license from the State Fish and Game Department, for which a charge of five dollars per year shall be made.' Seconded by Mr. Moore. Carried. Mr. Hill read a letter from J. M. Mr. Hill read his answer thereto, wherein he had stated that as our exhibit is an attraction to the fair, it seems to me that it would be no more than fair that a building be con structed for this purpose by the fair association. Motion by Mr. Wilson: I move that we go on record as supporting the con tention of the state game warden rela tive to the construction of buildings for our fair exhibits at any points in the state. Seconded by Mr. Moore. Carried. Mr. Hill read the correspondence he had had with J. H. Carmichael of Augusta. Mr. Carmichael had saved an elk from starvation and had taken care of it. He desires to ship the elk to the Everett City Park, Washington, for display. Motion by Mr. Wilson: I move that we allow Mr. Carmichael's request. Seconded by Mr. Moore. Carried. Mr. Marlowe read a letter from C. E. Miller, curator for the museum at Hays, Kansas, State Teachers' College, requesting permit to take a moose from Montana for his museum. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Montana Wild Life, Vol. 2: The Official Publication of the State Fish and Game Commission, January, 1930 The limit of game that should be al lowed by law receives special attention from each correspondent. Most of them are emphatic in their opinions, but the opinions are exceedingly variable. Few agree to the present limit, most of them considering it by far too high. The answers on limit of game birds are likewise varied. One writer thinks a man should be permitted to shoot all he is able to kill in a day. Another thinks about fifty the correct number. A few hold to the present number. The majority think it too high. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Montana Wild Life, Vol. 2: The Official Publication of the State Fish and Game Commission; December, 1929 Because of their very abundance they have followed the buffalo and big game, and only by the enactment of wise laws and their stringent enforcement can we hope to even partially bring them back. My experience with game has been varied and peculiar. During 56 years, a considerable portion of which was spent on the plains and in the moun tains from southern Texas to Montana, and outside the boundaries of civiliza tion, or habitation, I have killed every kind of big game excepting a buffalo and a mountain lion. During the latter 7o's I was all over the buffalo country, crossing numerous fresh trails of big bands, but never having the time to hunt them, being otherwise engaged, so never sighted or shot at one. As to mountain lions, I have hunted them but never had more than a fleet ing glimpse of one. For two winters on several occasions I trailed one that had a track like an African lion, but could never catch up with him, although once or twice I could nearly smell his breath. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Montana Wild Life, Vol. 2: The Official Publication of the State Fish and Game Commission; March, 1930 Divide and then known as the 'ceded strip, was probably the greatest hunt ing area in Montana. This area was a great mountain sheep and grizzly bear country and yearly sportsmen from New York and London availed themselves of these conditions and, guided by Jack Munroe, who still lives in Montana, al ways got their big horn and grizzly. Today under Park supervision this same area still abounds with wild life. The mountain sheep, wildest and shy est of them all, when this country be came a park, has now through contact with man and having been hay fed at certain points during severe winters, become so tame that pictures of them are secured, although in remote parts of this park, where few ever travel, mountain sheep are apparently as shy and wild as ever. The first feeding of these sheep was not really from a point of necessity, but rather to tame by feeding and thus try to hold them close to a highway, where tourists could view them. This certainly has been accomplished, as any one who has visited this country can testify. During a fall visit to the park by Ernest Thompson Seton, well known author and naturalist, I was detailed to accompany Mr. Seton and remained with him for eight days. This was after the park season, and we camped close to the summit of the Continental Divide to be as close as possible to the moun tain goat, for Mr. Seton was at this time making a study of the goat. During our stay many wild life stories were told. It was then that Mr. Seton spoke about the increase of the mountain sheep and with the ih crease would come the necessity of feeding them. I spoke of the desire of the hotel company of having them fed, for the purpose of seeing if by contact and feed we could not hold them in the same area during the tourist season. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Montana Wild Life, Vol. 2: October 1929 Mr. Leopold believes that cover and food may be insured by leaving the grassy swamps and the weedy and bushy fence rows and the thickets alone, and by the growing of grapevines and other plants for winter cover so that there will be at least one refuge on every 40 acres. Each cover should be at least as much ground as is occupied by an ordinary house, he says. He advises locating the refuge covers on the edge of the woods or in the Open, which, he says, are better for quail than the deep woods. Each refuge should have a few wild grapevines and the more these run over the bushes and form tangles the bet ter it is for the quail. Boys and girls who wish to grow quail are further ad vised to thicken up the refuge covers by planting in each of them groups of evergreen and locust trees. Feeding the quails in severe weather may be accomplished by hanging ears of corn under the grape tangles. They should be tied high enough so that they will be out of reach of rabbits. If you can build one refuge cover each year you will soon have lots of quail. They will benefit the farm crops, says Mr. Leopold, and furnish you enough music and pleasure to amply repay your trouble.
