Book excerpt: Excerpt from Montana Insects Pests, 1947 and 1948: Thirty-Second Report of the State Entomologist The entomological outlook for Montana presents a number of ramifications which have not been previously stressed. Our insect problems have increased in the last decade and the possibility of further. Serious situations arising is almost certain. During the last few years, we have had infestations of a number of insects new to the state. Likewise, some native insects that have not previously been pests have caused considerable damage to agricultural crops. It had been predicted by earlier workers that two of these new insects, the alfalfa weevil and the differential grasshopper, could not become established in Montana because of our ecological conditions. At the present time both of these insects have become serious pests. The differential grasshopper was first found in Dawson County in 1932. Since that time it has spread over much of the eastern and southern parts of Montana and is now found in economically important numbers as far west as Yellow stone and Big Horn counties. The alfalfa weevil was first 'observed in 1938 and has been a serious pest to alfalfa in Southeastern Montana since 1945. It has spread every year and at the present time it is as far north and east as Terry and as far west as Reed Point. This pest has become so serious in some sections that it has threatened the alfalfa seed and feed growing industries. It was assumed by many of the early workers that climatic factors were primarily responsible for limiting the distribution of many of these pests. It is apparent from the above examples that the ability of an insect to adapt itself cannot be overlooked in predicting the limits of its geographic distribution. The wheat stem sawfly, which is a native insect of Montana, did not become important economically until 1941. Since that time this insect has become one of our most serious pests of spring and winter wheat, at present confining itself largely to the northern part of the state. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Montana Insect Pests, 1945 and 1946: Thirty-First Report of the State Entomologist The constant and often insidious attack of insects on products which man desires and attempts to cultivate are so commonplace that they are accepted as a normal toll by most people most of the time. Different observers, using different methods of computation, have arrived at an estimate of 10 per cent as the usual expected loss, and often attempts at control are not employed unless obvious losses are considerably in excess of this figure. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Montana Insect Pests, 1953-1954: Thirty-Fifth Report of the State Entomologist The Federal Food and Drug Administration is aware that much of this contamination in grain is avoidable. At the present time it is conducting a program to eliminate, in so far as possible, the contamination Of cereals to be used for human consumption. Consequently, a good deal of this grain may, in the future, be condemned and declared unfit for food if this situa tion continues to exist. Another form of contamination has been brought to our attention by the Federal Food and Drug Administration. This has been the practice of dumping into farm storage bins fungicide - treated grains which were not seeded. In the Northwest. During the summer of 1954, approximately 60 carloads of this fungicide-treated grain, worth almost were condemned by the federal food inspection authorities. In addition, it was known that at least 10 carloads of insecticide-contaminated wheat were put on the market. In the latter case, the federal authorities could do nothing since this wheat was not shipped through interstate commerce. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Montana Insect Pests, 1941 and 1942: Twenty-Ninth Report of the State Entomologist; December, 1942 The insect pests which plague the rancher and farmer in Mon tana present an ever-changing picture. This is true for at least two reasons. First, the pests of importance are likely to change from year to year, the dry years having their more or less typical com plex of injurious forms, and the wet years reducing some of them and making conditions favorable for a new group; further, new pests are appearing in the State bringing with them new problems. Second, in the light of new research findings better control meth ods are being developed, both in Montana and outside of the State, which necessitate the constant inspection and revision of the ap proved methods of control. The control of grasshoppers and Mor mon crickets is a good example of this. The last decade has seen many advances in our methods of attacking these problems. Sur vey methods have been developed and refined, bait formulae have been improved and reduced in cost, and the mechanics of mixing and spreading baits have taken great strides forward, largely through the efforts of the United States Bureau of Entomology and Plant Quarantine. The main efforts of this office have been directed toward the control of the major pests, either through the administration of field control campaigns, or through the preparation of circulars describing approved methods of insect control. More than 300 inquiries on the control of a great variety of harmful animals are received and answered annually. During the past year 44 single-page pamphlets, many of them illustrated, were prepared by this office and published by the Montana Extension Service. These circulars, Series A, Nos. 1 to 44, are available from County Agents or from the Montana Ex tension Service, -bozeman, Montana. Over a period of years the involved states in cooperation with the Bureau of Entomology and Plant Quarantine have developed a good organization for the large-scale control of regional insects of migratory habits. Control operations in Montana, under the joint direction of the State Entomologist's Office and this Bureau. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Montana Insect Pests, 1949-1950: Thirty-Third Report of the State Entomologist A gradual but continual spread of Montana's No. 2 agricultural insect pest, alfalfa weevil, has been noted. It appears that alfalfa weevils are spreading west up the Yellowstone River Valley, and infestations north as far as Lewistown have been observed. New methods for controlling the alfalfa weevil have been worked out through extensive investigations and the development of a new insecticide which now make it possible for farmers and ranchers to prevent the serious losses which have been inflicted on alfalfa hay and seed crops. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Montana Insect Pests, 1951-1952: 34th Report of the State Entomologist Grasshopper populations in 1951 were generally lower than in 1950. Scattered localized infestations of range and crop grass hoppers did occur so that some economic damage was experienced in nearly every county. Grasshopper control is now the complete responsibility of individual land owners except in cases where public domain is involved. Therefore, more intensive educational programs were conducted. A total of 53 educational meetings were undertaken which were attended by people. In addition, educational programs were carried out through newspapers, radio, and bulletins. It is estimated that acres of cropland and acres of rangeland were treated for grasshopper control during this year. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Montana Insect Pests for 1931 and 1932: The Twenty-Fourth Report of the State of Entomologist of Montana More widespread infestations of the pale western cutworm were experienced in grain in 1932 than in any season since 1921. Ex tensive crop damage resulted in most of the northern part of Valley County, in the Judith Basin, in western Fergus County, and in western Gallatin County. Light, scattering infestations were recorded from many other sections. A few thousand acres of grain, together with a small acreage of corn, cultivated mustard, and flax, were completely destroyed by the cutw'orms, and reports show that acres of crop were noticeably damaged. (see figure Favorable moisture conditions early in the season enabled grain to get such a start that light or moderate infestations of the cut worm did not completely take the crops in most instances.
