Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The human mind needs monsters. In every culture and in every epoch in human history, from ancient Egypt to modern Hollywood, imaginary beings have haunted dreams and fantasies, provoking in young and old shivers of delight, thrills of terror, and endless fascination. All known folklores brim with visions of looming and ferocious monsters, often in the role as adversaries to great heroes. But while heroes have been closely studied by mythologists, monsters have been neglected, even though they are equally important as pan-human symbols and reveal similar insights into ways the mind works. In Monsters: Evil Beings, Mythical Beasts, and All Manner of Imaginary Terrors, anthropologist David D. Gilmore explores what human traits monsters represent and why they are so ubiquitous in people's imaginations and share so many features across different cultures. Using colorful and absorbing evidence from virtually all times and places, Monsters is the first attempt by an anthropologist to delve into the mysterious, frightful abyss of mythical beasts and to interpret their role in the psyche and in society. After many hair-raising descriptions of monstrous beings in art, folktales, fantasy, literature, and community ritual, including such avatars as Dracula and Frankenstein, Hollywood ghouls, and extraterrestrials, Gilmore identifies many common denominators and proposes some novel interpretations. Monsters, according to Gilmore, are always enormous, man-eating, gratuitously violent, aggressive, sexually sadistic, and superhuman in power, combining our worst nightmares and our most urgent fantasies. We both abhor and worship our monsters: they are our gods as well as our demons. Gilmore argues that the immortal monster of the mind is a complex creation embodying virtually all of the inner conflicts that make us human. Far from being something alien, nonhuman, and outside us, our monsters are our deepest selves.

  • Publisher : Univ of California Press

  • ISBN : 0520938992
  • Pages : 356 pages

Download or read book Millennial Monsters written by Anne Allison and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2006-06-30 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From sushi and karaoke to martial arts and technoware, the currency of made-in-Japan cultural goods has skyrocketed in the global marketplace during the past decade. The globalization of Japanese “cool” is led by youth products: video games, manga (comic books), anime (animation), and cute characters that have fostered kid crazes from Hong Kong to Canada. Examining the crossover traffic between Japan and the United States, Millennial Monstersexplores the global popularity of Japanese youth goods today while it questions the make-up of the fantasies and the capitalistic conditions of the play involved. Arguing that part of the appeal of such dream worlds is the polymorphous perversity with which they scramble identity and character, the author traces the postindustrial milieux from which such fantasies have arisen in postwar Japan and been popularly received in the United States.

Book Classics Incorporated

Download or read book Classics Incorporated written by Elise Noël McMahon and published by Summa Publications, Inc.. This book was released on 1998 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work Professor McMahon takes a new approach to interpreting the most canonized century in French literature. By viewing literature as essentially a cultural practice, she offers an unconventional reading of canonical masterpieces of the era (Corneille's Medee, Moliere's La Bourgeois gentilhomme, Racine's Phedre, and La Fontaine's Fables) to the extent that these works are compared to "non-literary" texts which focus on the human body. "Classics Incorporated" draws on extensive archival research into such unfamiliar historical sources as cookbooks, shopping guides, treatises on medicine and monstrosity, and dance manuals. Because of this insistence on treating literature as part of a given culture and historicising texts in a novel manner, "Classics Incorporated" stands apart as a critical study that can appeal to a diverse audience: those who are interested in cultural criticism, popular culture, cultural history, and critical theory alike.

Book The Monster

Download or read book The Monster written by Michael W. Hudson and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2010-10-26 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who killed the economy? A page-turning, true-crime exposé of the subprime salesmen and Wall Street alchemists who produced the biggest financial scandal in American history "It's hard to have a guilty conscience if you don't have a conscience. Anything that benefited production - that benefited me and benefited my wallet - I'd do it." The sales force at Ameriquest Mortgage took this philosophy to heart. They watched the Hollywood white-collar-crime flick "Boiler Room" as a training tape, studying how to pitch overpriced deals to unsuspecting home owners. They learned how to forge signatures on mortgage paperwork and create fake documents in "cut-and-paste" operations they dubbed "The Lab" or "The Art Department." In this stunning narrative, award-winning reporter Michael W. Hudson reveals the story of the rise and fall of the subprime mortgage business by chronicling the rise and fall of two corporate empires: Ameriquest and Lehman Brothers. As the biggest subprime lender and Wall Street's biggest patron of subprime, Ameriquest and Lehman did more than any other institutions to create the feeding frenzy that emboldened mortgage pros to flood the nation with high-risk, high-profit home loans. It's a tale populated by a remarkable cast of the characters: a shadowy billionaire who created the subprime industry out of the ashes of the 1980s S&L scandal; Wall Street executives with an insatiable desire for product; struggling home owners ensnared in the most ingenious of traps; lawyers and investigators who tried to expose the fraud; politicians and bureaucrats who turned a blind eye; and, most of all, the drug-snorting, high-living salesmen who tell all about the money they made, the lies they told, the deals they closed. Provocative and gripping, The Monster is a searing exposé of the bottom-feeding fraud and top-down greed that fueled the financial collapse.

Book Unmapped Countries

Download or read book Unmapped Countries written by Anne-Julia Zwierlein and published by Anthem Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collection of two documentaries by Sebastian Junger and Tim Hetherington. 'Which Way is the Front Line from Here? The Life and Time of Tim Hetherington' (2013) shows how Tim travelled the world documenting conflicts in Afghanistan, Liberia and Libya, among other locations, accompanied by his friend and long-term collaborator Sebastian. The two strived to capture the humanity within conflict situations and with their images they focused on the individuals involved and their experiences of the violence surrounding them. Unfortunately, in 2011 Tim was killed by a mortar blast and this film is a tribute and celebration of the legacy he has left behind and includes interviews with those who knew him best. 'Restrepo' (2010) chronicles the year that Junger and Hetherington spent in Afghanistan on assignment for Vanity Fair magazine. Embedded with an army unit in the treacherous Korangal valley, the pair lived in close proximity with the men as they defended an outpost called Restrepo after PFC Juan S. Restrepo, a platoon medic who was an early casualty in the campaign.
