Book The Crossroads at Midnight

Download or read book The Crossroads at Midnight written by Abby Howard and published by . This book was released on 2020-10-06 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A masterful collection of tales from the faded border between our day-to-day world and the horrifying unknown on the other side of midnight. An old woman living alone on the edge of a bog gets an unexpected -- and unsettling -- visitor, throwing her quiet life into a long-buried mystery. An isolated backwoods family stumbles into good fortune for a time with a monstrous discovery in the lake behind their house, but that time is running short. And a misfit little girl, struggling to make friends, meets an understanding soul one day at the beach: but why will he only play with her alone at night? All these lonely souls -- and more -- have reached out into the darkness, not knowing what they might find. Around the dark edges of reality lurk unknown beings with unknowable intentions -- ordinary objects can become cursed possessions, entities who seem like friends can become monstrous, and those who seem monstrous can become the truest companions. In this collection of evocative, unnerving slice-of-life horror, five stories explore what happens when one is desperate enough to seek solace in the unnatural, and what might be waiting for us at the Crossroads at Midnight.

Book excerpt: All proceeds go towards the Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome for help in finding better treatments and one day, a cure. A new journey to the Crossroads: our childhood fears ripped apart the fabric of our reality. Others called it make-believe, because, there's no such thing as monsters. Right? The monsters that were lurking under our beds when we were children. How many nights did we lie awake and pray for daylight? We snuggled next to Teddy bears, curled up under makeshift blanket tents, and prayed for our night lights to banish the shadows. Did those monsters really exist or were they fabrications of our overactive imaginations? Nobody knows except us... and the monsters. During those childhood years, they crept out from the darkness under our beds and scraped their claws at the bedsheets. Never to be seen in the morning light. As we grew up, they changed along with us but they never went away. They were never believed in...except by those held hostage, when nightfall came once more.

Book The Shadow Order Crossroads Witch Book 1

Download or read book The Shadow Order Crossroads Witch Book 1 written by J S Malcom and published by . This book was released on 2021-04-07 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Either I defeat the monster, or I become the monster. As if being locked up in the crazy house wasn't bad enough, I wake up to discover that my nightmares are coming true. As in, the person I trust most in the world just morphed into a bloodthirsty monster. My only chance for escape comes in the form of two women calling out from within a shimmering tunnel that just popped open from out of nowhere. So, it's either stick around and be murdered or jump through some kind of portal. And there I was thinking my new meds were working. I take Door Number Two and find myself ushered into the world of the Shadow Order, an ancient society of witches whose mission is protecting the covens. (Who me, a witch? Well, that sure explains a few things.) I'm given a choice: I can either go it alone and take my chances, or join their magical training program. Seeing as one option involves dying, I soon find myself alongside other young witches learning how to hone their magic. The problem being I didn't even know I had magic, never mind how to use it. There's also the small issue of it being unique enough to act as some sort of monster-luring beacon. While we know next to nothing about the supernatural psycho on the loose, we do know it changes form by hopping in and out of other peoples' bodies. And, right now, the body it wants most is mine. Why don't I find that flattering?

Book Monster theory electronic resource

Download or read book Monster theory electronic resource written by Jeffrey Jerome Cohen and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 1996-11-15 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributors to Monster Theory consider beasts, demons, freaks and fiends as symbolic expressions of cultural unease that pervade a society and shape its collective behavior. Through a historical sampling of monsters, these essays argue that our fascination for the monstrous testifies to our continued desire to explore difference and prohibition.

Book Demon Soul Crossroads Witch Book 2

Download or read book Demon Soul Crossroads Witch Book 2 written by J S Malcom and published by . This book was released on 2021-06-17 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One chance. That's all I'll have. Along with a choice I can't possibly make. In just a few weeks, I've gone from living in a psychiatric hospital, to learning I have magic, to joining a secret society of witches. I've also had to come to terms with both what I am and where I came from. Half demon, half witch, born in the demon real-a magical mutation created for sacrificial purposes. It's so nice knowing that the woman who raised me only did so because she was planning to spill my blood on her sacrificial altar. So, yeah. No wonder I went crazy. Since joining the ranks of the Shadow Order, I've made friends and enemies. I also fell in love with a kind and sexy guy named Kai. Now, that love has been stolen from me by the same monsters that want to steal my magic. With the clock ticking down on what's left of Kai's life, I need to come up with a solution fast. So far, I've got nothing. Meanwhile, werewolves and vampires are turning up dead, seemingly at the hands of witches. Not surprisingly, those other tribes are calling out for blood. Like that's not enough, witches are being exposed and threatened by a new group calling themselves the Hunters. And what do they want, exactly? Just the eradication of our kind entirely. Then there's the deal I make with a Fae goddess, which at first looks like it might provide me with what I need to defeat my enemies. Instead, it leaves me facing an impossible choice. I'll have to either leave Kai to his fate or doom everyone else. Crossroads Witch is a fast-paced, unpredictable new urban fantasy series that readers are calling "amazing," "with strong female leads," and "full of excitement!" If you like snarky kickass heroines, fast-paced action, magic, witchcraft and romance, then grab it today!

Book Down to the Crossroads

    Book Details:
  • Author : Aram Goudsouzian
  • Publisher : Macmillan + ORM
  • Release : 2014-02-04
  • ISBN : 0374710767
  • Pages : 362 pages

Download or read book Down to the Crossroads written by Aram Goudsouzian and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2014-02-04 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1962, James Meredith became a civil rights hero when he enrolled as the first African American student at the University of Mississippi. Four years later, he would make the news again when he reentered Mississippi, on foot. His plan was to walk from Memphis to Jackson, leading a "March Against Fear" that would promote black voter registration and defy the entrenched racism of the region. But on the march's second day, he was shot by a mysterious gunman, a moment captured in a harrowing and now iconic photograph. What followed was one of the central dramas of the civil rights era. With Meredith in the hospital, the leading figures of the civil rights movement flew to Mississippi to carry on his effort. They quickly found themselves confronting southern law enforcement officials, local activists, and one another. In the span of only three weeks, Martin Luther King, Jr., narrowly escaped a vicious mob attack; protesters were teargassed by state police; Lyndon Johnson refused to intervene; and the charismatic young activist Stokely Carmichael first led the chant that would define a new kind of civil rights movement: Black Power. Aram Goudsouzian's Down to the Crossroads is the story of the last great march of the King era, and the first great showdown of the turbulent years that followed. Depicting rural demonstrators' courage and the impassioned debates among movement leaders, Goudsouzian reveals the legacy of an event that would both integrate African Americans into the political system and inspire even bolder protests against it. Full of drama and contemporary resonances, this book is civil rights history at its best.

Book Maps and Monsters in Medieval England

Download or read book Maps and Monsters in Medieval England written by Asa Simon Mittman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study centers on issues of marginality and monstrosity in medieval England. In the middle ages, geography was viewed as divinely ordered, so Britain's location at the periphery of the inhabitable world caused anxiety among its inhabitants. Far from the world's holy center, the geographic margins were considered monstrous. Medieval geography, for centuries scorned as crude, is now the subject of several careful studies. Monsters have likewise been the subject of recent attention in the growing field of monster studies, though few works situate these creatures firmly in their specific historical contexts. This book sits at the crossroads of these two discourses (geography and monstrosity), treated separately in the established scholarship but inseparable in the minds of medieval authors and artists.
