Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Monrovia Modern Danny Hoffman uses the ruins of four iconic modernist buildings in Monrovia, Liberia, as a way to explore the relationship between the built environment and political imagination. Hoffman shows how the E. J. Roye tower and the Hotel Africa luxury resort, as well as the unfinished Ministry of Defense and Liberia Broadcasting System buildings, transformed during the urban warfare of the 1990s from symbols of the modernist project of nation-building to reminders of the challenges Monrovia's residents face. The transient lives of these buildings' inhabitants, many of whom are ex-combatants, prevent them from making place-based claims to a right to the city and hinder their ability to think of ways to rebuild and repurpose their built environment. Featuring nearly 100 of Hoffman's color photographs, Monrovia Modern is situated at the intersection of photography, architecture, and anthropology, mapping out the possibilities and limits for imagining an urban future in Monrovia and beyond.

Book excerpt: Describes the voyage of the Azor, a ship sent by the Charleston-based Liberian Exodus Association to carry black American immigrants to Africa, and relates Williams's observations on the culture of Liberia. Narrative includes conditions on the ship such as spoiled food, storms, filthy and cramped accommodations, seasickness and an epidemic of measles which claimed the lives of several immigrants. The ship first puts ashore at Freetown, Sierra Leone, which favorably impresses Williams. Monrovia, Liberia, however, he finds "desolate". Much to the immigrants' dismay, when they land in Liberia they discover that no one there has been informed of their coming; fortunately, the local government chooses to welcome them. Williams goes on to tour sections of Liberia. He travels up the St. Paul's River and encounters two of the native tribes, the Kroo and the Vei. Later, he meets Anthony W. Gardner, the President of Liberia, a former black immigrant from America. He describes in great detail the climate of Liberia, its government, its people, the vegetation to be found there, and the reception of the immigrants.

Book Monrovia A City on Fire

Download or read book Monrovia A City on Fire written by Alain Kassa and published by L'Aleph. This book was released on 2014-04 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The summer of 2013 was particularly deadly in Monrovia, Liberia's capital city, already disfigured by fourteen years of war. City on Fire was this year one of the biggest hits in vogue in Liberia. The author of this song, King O'Brian, a contemporary Liberian artist, was not referring to Monrovia troubles but to a new fashion of red wigs imported from Nigeria that caped Liberian women of all ages. This document is part of a logbook and traces the life day after day of a medical emergency team based in Monrovia in the diplomatic area of Mamba Point, one of the most affected area during this last episode of war that left at least 2,000 dead and 3,000 wounded in two months. "When we read the book each time it's the same emotion, we think our-selves in the spot. We are held in suspense throughout the story, a unique testimony. This is factual, written in a journalistic style at times and some-times as a script for a documentary." - Marie-Eve Raguenaud, MD, MSc, MSF staff 1997-2009 "A gripping first-hand account by an onsite medical humanitarian organization manager describing what humans can do to one another when social traditions and customs disappear, even when many continue to act with humanity and dignity. Not only are horrors reported, but also how dedicated humanitarian workers who don't evacuate can succeed in heroically aiding the suffering population. Included are facts about outside influences in Liberia down through the years. This short history, based on the author's personal journal, displays the courage and dedication of today's professional humanitarian volunteers and represents why MSF is my wife and my only charity." - Daniel Clarke Flynn, J.D., Former international Corporate Human Resources executive. Alain Kassa, graduated in International Relations (Paris I), is a Doctors Without Borders member since 23 years. He performs several missions in Africa, Europe and Asia. He was Head of Mission in Liberia during the last year of the conflict.

Book Trans Atlantic Sojourners

Download or read book Trans Atlantic Sojourners written by Neely Young and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unique in its formation and in a citizenry made up largely of repatriated ex-slaves, Liberia has been the scene of a fascinating intercontinental history. Trans-Atlantic Sojourners enters this history through the experiences of one Americo-Liberian family. M. Neely Young introduces us to two patriarchs, both former slaves--Othello Richards of Rockbridge County, Virginia, and William Coleman of Fayette and Woodford Counties, Kentucky. From their arrival in the new African republic in the 1850s until the overthrow of Americo-Liberian rule in 1980, the family played a key role in the nation's economic affairs, representing the interests of the interior agriculturalists against the merchant elites of Monrovia, and was prominent as well in Liberia's political and cultural arenas. The author traces the family over a number of generations, revealing a course as dramatic as that of the country itself. With the violent upheaval of the 1980s, most of Richards' and Coleman's descendants escaped to America; in the time since, some have recently returned to Liberia. Encompassing the issues of slavery, white and black colonization, the tensions within the Americo-Liberian class, and the Liberian concept of "black republicanism," this family's narrative reflects historical patterns in Liberia and America that resonate to today.

Book Liberia s First Civil War

Download or read book Liberia s First Civil War written by Edmund Hogan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-13 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive narrative history of Liberia’s first civil war, from its origins in the 1980s right through the conflict and up to the peace agreement and conclusion of hostilities in 1997. The first Liberian Civil War was one of Africa’s most devastating conflicts, claiming the lives of more than 200,000 Liberians, and sending shockwaves across the world. Drawing on a wide range of local and international sources, the book traces the background of the war and its long-term and immediate causes, before analysing the detail of the unfolding conflict, the eventual ceasefire, peace agreement and subsequent elections. In particular, the book shines a light on hitherto unseen first-hand Roman Catholic indigenous and missionary sources, which offer a rare intimacy to the analysis. Detailing the impact of Liberia’s individual warlords and peacemakers, the book also explains the roles played by non-governmental agencies, national, regional and international actors, by the UN, ECOWAS and the Organisation of African Unity, and by nations with special interests and influence, such as the USA and other West African states. This book’s detailed narrative analysis of the Liberian conflict will be an important read for anyone with an interest in the Liberian conflict, including researchers within African studies, political science, contemporary history, international relations, and peace and conflict studies.

  • Publisher : Graywolf Press

  • Pages : 336 pages

Book excerpt: A novel of exhilarating range, magical realism, and history—a dazzling retelling of Liberia’s formation Wayétu Moore’s powerful debut novel, She Would Be King, reimagines the dramatic story of Liberia’s early years through three unforgettable characters who share an uncommon bond. Gbessa, exiled from the West African village of Lai, is starved, bitten by a viper, and left for dead, but still she survives. June Dey, raised on a plantation in Virginia, hides his unusual strength until a confrontation with the overseer forces him to flee. Norman Aragon, the child of a white British colonizer and a Maroon slave from Jamaica, can fade from sight when the earth calls him. When the three meet in the settlement of Monrovia, their gifts help them salvage the tense relationship between the African American settlers and the indigenous tribes, as a new nation forms around them. Moore’s intermingling of history and magical realism finds voice not just in these three characters but also in the fleeting spirit of the wind, who embodies an ancient wisdom. “If she was not a woman,” the wind says of Gbessa, “she would be king.” In this vibrant story of the African diaspora, Moore, a talented storyteller and a daring writer, illuminates with radiant and exacting prose the tumultuous roots of a country inextricably bound to the United States. She Would Be King is a novel of profound depth set against a vast canvas and a transcendent debut from a major new author.

Book Tribe and Class in Monrovia

Download or read book Tribe and Class in Monrovia written by Merran Fraenkel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-07-13 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1964, this book analyses the unique type of social stratification which is more akin to a social class system in Monrovia, Liberia's capital. Liberia, established in 1847 has no history of rule by a colonial power and is of perculiar sociological interest, having been governed until the first half of the twentieth century by a minority group of immigrants from America and their descendants. The bulk of the population, however, is made up of members of about 20 tribes, between whom and the American descendants a caste-like social system has developed.
