Download or read book Monroe s New Fourth Reader Classic Reprint written by Lewis Baxter Monroe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Monroe's New Fourth Reader Elocution is made practical: first, by asking questions which help the children to imagine the different scenes in the lesson; secondly, by requiring pupils to use the tones necessary to indicate the various emotions and situations represented in the reading-matter; thirdly, by gradually evolving the idea of emphasis, so that pupils shall discover for themselves the emphatic words. In addition, the teacher should drill the class on the 'words in the Introduction, that constant practice may insure distinct articulation. Etymology. - Attention is given to analyzing words into root, suffix, and prefix. A few lessons are given for explana tion and practice; then pupils should be required to present words for analysis. The suffixes and prefixes are defined in the Appendix. Grammar is practically considered in exercises which will give the children a knowledge of the parts of speech, and familiarize them by degrees with the variations of nouns, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, number, person, etc. No attempt is made to treat of mere technicalities; for the lessons in grammar are not theoretical, but practical. Composition, as introduced in the lower books of the series, is gradually extended in this reader. Exercises in synonyms, and questions upon the reading-lessons are given for slate-work the pupils are required to write in prose the substance of various poems, and, occasionally, an outline of the story in the lesson is given for composition. The Synopsis of the Preparatory Studies will enable teachers to find at once the lesson containing drill upon any subject not perfectly understood. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fourth Reader We trust that the method of teaching the meaning of words through the exercises at the end of the lessons will commend itself to teachers, and that they will enlarge very much upon the plan thus indicated. The repetition of formal definitions rarely leaves any impression upon a child's mind. Words are tools: by using them we find out what they are good for; but telling their purpose, instead of working with them, does little to in crease their usefulness in our hands. Book Black Radical The Life and Times of William Monroe Trotter

Download or read book Black Radical The Life and Times of William Monroe Trotter written by Kerri K. Greenidge and published by Liveright Publishing. This book was released on 2019-11-19 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times • Times Critics Top Books of 2019 This long-overdue biography reestablishes William Monroe Trotter’s essential place next to Douglass, Du Bois, and King in the pantheon of American civil rights heroes. William Monroe Trotter (1872– 1934), though still virtually unknown to the wider public, was an unlikely American hero. With the stylistic verve of a newspaperman and the unwavering fearlessness of an emancipator, he galvanized black working- class citizens to wield their political power despite the violent racism of post- Reconstruction America. For more than thirty years, the Harvard-educated Trotter edited and published the Guardian, a weekly Boston newspaper that was read across the nation. Defining himself against the gradualist politics of Booker T. Washington and the elitism of W. E. B. Du Bois, Trotter advocated for a radical vision of black liberation that prefigured leaders such as Marcus Garvey, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King Jr. Synthesizing years of archival research, historian Kerri Greenidge renders the drama of turn- of- the- century America and reclaims Trotter as a seminal figure, whose prophetic, yet ultimately tragic, life offers a link between the vision of Frederick Douglass and black radicalism in the modern era.

Book The Fifth Reader Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Fifth Reader Classic Reprint written by Lewis Baxter Monroe and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fifth Reader Perhaps the most important book that falls into the hands of a child is his School Reader. Its manifold themes tend to open various channels of thought; its style of expression impresses itself upon the pupils mind, and has an influence to mould his forms of speech and writing; the compositions themselves are stored in his memory to recur a thousand times in after life, - the more dear for being associated with the cherished scenes of childhood; and, most of all, the sentiments inculcated become inevitably a part of his moral consciousness. His rules of life, his springs of action in times which test his integrity or try his virtue, are in very many instances traceable to the seed which took root in his heart from the lessons in his School Reader. But these or any other desirable ends to be derived from such a book imply, of course, that its selections shall be of the right stamp. Not alone must they inculcate wholesome truths, but they must do this in a genial, attractive way. We must interest the pupil in order to benefit him. A pitiful martyrdom is endured by teachers and scholars where weary hours are spent in endeavoring to make children comprehend abstractions fit only for the mind of a Bacon, or to urge them through intricacies of style which might bewilder a Johnson. If "wisdom's ways are ways of pleasantness," as we surely believe, that cannot be the wisest course which proves irksome and repulsive. With these convictions, the endeavor has been made to compile a book which should, first of all, be pure and ennobling in its moral influence; and next, one which should be both profitable and enjoyable. An elaborate theoretical treatise, with set rules for reading, might have been included in the Introduction, but long experience and observation have convinced the compiler that such things are of little practical value in the school-room, and are generally unused by the most successful teachers. No number of abstract definitions, no amount of mere theory, ever changed a poor reader to a good one. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
