Book Large Eddy Simulation of Supersonic Inlet Flows

Download or read book Large Eddy Simulation of Supersonic Inlet Flows written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interaction of a shock wave with a turbulent boundary layer is a central problem in supersonic inlet flows. This work uses numerical and analytical techniques to study shock/turbulence interaction in order to identify and explain factors important in shock/boundary layer interaction. Direct numerical simulation of a normal shock wave with an isotropic turbulent field of vorticity and entropy fluctuations showed that negative upstream correlation between the vorticity and entropy fluctuations enhances the turbulence across the shock. Positive upstream correlation has a suppressing effect. A new numerical method providing excellent high wavenumber resolution while reducing the computational cost was developed. A model with no adjustable constants was developed to study the vortex breakdown resulting from the interaction of canard or forbody vortices with the shock waves in a supersonic inlet flow. Very good agreement with both experiment and computation was obtained. A numerical method to compute shock/turbulence interaction using a conservative form of the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) equations has been developed and validated. LES of the interaction of isotropic turbulence with a normal shock was performed and comparisons with direct numerical simulation (DNS) results were favorable. A new Fortran 90 code has been developed for the computation of shock/turbulence interaction. The code is an improved version of codes used previously in shock/turbulence interaction simulations.

Book excerpt: The focus of the grant was the use of Application Visualization System (AVS), developed by Advanced Visual Systems, Inc., for animating supersonic turbulent flows computed using Large Eddy Simulation (LES) . Three flow configurations are visualized: a turbulent flat plate supersonic boundary layer, an 8 deg supersonic compression corner and a 25 deg supersonic compression corner. The animations display the quantitative and qualitative features of the turbulence production and the complex physics of the shock wave turbulent boundary layer interaction.

Book Large Eddy Simulation of Supersonic Compression Corner Using ENO Scheme

Download or read book Large Eddy Simulation of Supersonic Compression Corner Using ENO Scheme written by Hong Yan and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Large Eddy Simulation of a 25 deg compression corner at M = 2.88 and Re(delta) - 2 x 10(exp 4) is performed using an Essentially Non Oscillatory (ENO) scheme. The Favre filtered compressible Navier-Stokes equations are solved using a Monotone Integrated Large Eddy Simulation (MILES) technique on an unstructured grid of tetrahedral cells. The mean flow variables and turbulent shear stress at the incoming flow are in good agreement with experiment and DNS. The separation length scaled by the characteristic scale shows agreement with the experiment. No pronounced pressure plateau is observed compared with experiment at higher Reynolds number.

Book Large Eddy Simulation of Three Dimensional High Speed Aerodynamic Flows

Download or read book Large Eddy Simulation of Three Dimensional High Speed Aerodynamic Flows written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An unstructured grid Large Eddy Simulation (LES) methodology has been developed for compressible high speed flows. The filtered compressible Navier-Stokes equations are solved on an unstructured grid of tetrahera. The inviscid fluxes are obtained from an exact locally one-dimensional Riemann solver using Godunov's method. The viscous fluxes are obtained using a discrete analog of Gauss' Theorem. The reconstruction is performed using a Least Squares technique. The temporal integration is a Runge-Kutta method. The algorithm is overall second order accurate in space and time. Four flowfields have been computed: decay of isotropic turbulence, channel flow, supersonic flat plate boundary layer and supersonic compression corner. The first and second cases are effectively incompressible, while the third and fourth cases are supersonic (Mach 3). The computed results show close agreement with experiment and Direct Numerical Simulation and validate the unstructured grid LES methodology.

Book Investigation of High resolution Methods in Large eddy Simulation of Subsonic and Supersonic Wall Turbulent Flows

Download or read book Investigation of High resolution Methods in Large eddy Simulation of Subsonic and Supersonic Wall Turbulent Flows written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents the motivation, objectives and reasoning behind the undertaken PhD to investigate the capability of compressible Implicit Large Eddy Simulation (ILES) in simulating wall-bounded inhomogeneous flows with particular interest in the near wall region and further presents the progress achieved to date. Investigation includes the assessment of current ILES methods to resolve inhomogeneous turbulence as well as compressible turbulent boundary layers and to improve on those models further. A channel flow is an excellent problem to use to investigate the properties of a SGS model near a wall. The presence of a solid boundary tends to alter the behaviour of the turbulent flow in a number of ways that need to be modeled by the SGS model in order to correctly represent the flow near the wall and most importantly the boundary layer. The presence of the wall inhibits the growth of the small scales, alters the exchange mechanisms between the resolved and unresolved scales and finally gives rise in the SGS near wall region to important Reynolds-stress producing events. A literature survey was carried out to identify other numerical investigations in simulating channel flow as well as data that could be used for validation purposes. The main parameters used to validate the level of resolution in simulating channel flow are identified and a number of tools are developed. The primary parameters extensively used to validate LES simulations of channel flow throughout the literature are mean flow velocity profiles, turbulent kinetic energy, dissipation and shear stress profiles, wall shear stress and friction velocities as well as energy spectra in the spanwise and streamwise homogeneous directions. Compressible viscous ILES of inhomogeneous anisotropic turbulence in an incompressible channel flow at wall normal grid resolutions of 68, 96 and 128 cells are carried out with grid clustering applied to the wall normal direction. Initial results conducted in the compress.

Book Large Eddy Simulation in a Channel with Exit Boundary Conditions

Download or read book Large Eddy Simulation in a Channel with Exit Boundary Conditions written by T. Cziesla and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The influence of the exit boundary conditions (vanishing first derivative of the velocity components and constant pressure) on the large eddy simulation of the fully developed turbulent channel flow has been investigated for equidistant and stretched grids at the channel exit. Results show that the chosen exit boundary conditions introduce some small disturbance which is mostly damped by the grid stretching. The difference between the fully developed turbulent channel flow obtained with LES with periodicity condition and the inlet and exit and the LES with fully developed flow at the inlet and the exit boundary condition is less than 10% for equidistant grids and less than 5% for the case grid stretching. The chosen boundary condition is of interest because it may be used in complex flows with backflow at exit.

Book Large eddy Simulation of the Flat plate Turbulent Boundary Layer at High Reynolds Numbers

Download or read book Large eddy Simulation of the Flat plate Turbulent Boundary Layer at High Reynolds Numbers written by Michio Inoue and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The near-wall, subgrid-scale (SGS) model [Chung and Pullin, "Large-eddy simulation and wall-modeling of turbulent channel flow", J. Fluid Mech. 631, 281--309 (2009)] is used to perform large-eddy simulations (LES) of the incompressible developing, smooth-wall, flat-plate turbulent boundary layer. In this model, the stretched-vortex, SGS closure is utilized in conjunction with a tailored, near-wall model designed to incorporate anisotropic vorticity scales in the presence of the wall. The composite SGS-wall model is presently incorporated into a computer code suitable for the LES of developing flat-plate boundary layers. This is then used to study several aspects of zero- and adverse-pressure gradient turbulent boundary layers."
