Book Methyl Methacrylate

Download or read book Methyl Methacrylate written by Wendy Dormer and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A concise assessment of the risks to human health posed by exposure to methyl methacrylate, a synthetic chemical used primarily in the production of cast acrylic sheet, acrylic emulsions, moulding and extrusion resins, and several consumer and medical products, including dental prostheses, surgical bone cements, and orthotic shoe inserts. The document is part of a new series of brief reports aimed at the characterization of hazards and dose-response for exposures to selected industrial chemicals. With this goal in mind, documents in the series focus on studies and findings considered critical for risk characterization. Studies of environmental behaviour indicate that methyl methacrylate is emitted mainly to air, does not persist in the atmosphere, and is not expected to contribute to depletion of the ozone layer. Inhalation is identified as the principal route of human exposure. The general population may be exposed to methyl methacrylate through the use of paints, varnishes, lacquers and other consumer products. In animal studies, methyl methacrylate shows low acute toxicity. The principal effect observed with low doses was irritation of the nasal cavity. Higher doses were associated with adverse effects on the kidney and liver. Well-designed studies indicate that the chemical has no adverse effects on development and is not carcinogenic. In humans, methyl methacrylate is a mild skin irritant and has the potential to induce skin sensitization in susceptible individuals. Although occupational asthma associated with exposure has been reported, evidence that methyl methacrylate is a respiratory sensitizer was judged inadequate. Evidence from epidemiological studies of carcinogenic risk in humans was considered inconclusive. On the basis of toxic effects observed in inhalation studies in animals, the report established a tolerable daily intake of 1.2 mg/kg body weight.

Book Adhesion Between Polymers and Concrete Adh sion Entre Polym res Et B ton

Download or read book Adhesion Between Polymers and Concrete Adh sion Entre Polym res Et B ton written by H. R. Sasse and published by Springer. This book was released on 1986 with total page 792 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preface Adhesion is a phenomenon architects and civil engineers are not very familiar with. In other disciplines knowledge about surface properties and the background of bonding energies is also far from satisfactory; nevertheless there are many important· applications in concrete engineering, where adhesion is necessary for success and durability. These include: - coating and painting - repair of concrete surfaces - bonding of fresh to old concrete - crack injection - glueing of precast elements - glueing of steel to concrete, etc. In 1981 RILEM established the technical committee 52-RAC 'Resin Adherence to Concrete'. The main aims of the committee's work were - to collect research results and practical experiences - to initiate and coordinate research programs - to develop, on a scientific base, test methods for field and for laboratory purposes. One of the results of the committee's work is a state-of-the-art report, which will be presented orally as a General Report at the International Symposium ISAP '86, and will be printed either in the RILEM journal Materials and Structures or separately. Several test recommendations have been elaborated and will be prepared as drafts for the participants ofISAP '86. These are: - direct tensile test - pull-off test - direct shear test - slant shear test - four-point bending test - dynamic loading test - thermal compatibility test (two versions) - injectibility test.

Book Alternating Copolymers

Download or read book Alternating Copolymers written by J.M.G. Cowie and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examination of the early literature attests to the fact that the study of copolymerization was initiated when polymer science was in its infancy. It has continued to grow to a subject of major importance and has been a source of interest to both academic and industrialist alike. The wide spectrum of structures and properties available in the statistical copolymer has made this a fruitful field of exploration, but one particular and more restricted form which has held its own fascination for many is the limiting case of the strictly alternating copolymer. This is formed, in the ideal situation, when two monomers in a reaction mixture add consecutively to create a polymer chain with a regular {ABABAB} structure, irrespective of the monomer feed ratio. When this happens the resulting copolymer will always have the same composition, a feature which can be advantageous but also somewhat restrictive, as the ability to vary the properties is then limited. Within a series entitled Speciality Polymers it seems appropriate then to deal with this subject, particularly as no previous attempt has been made to draw together the various facets of alternating copolymerization into one volume. It also seems timely to present a more unified picture of the subject which will also illustrate the progress made.

Book Template Polymerization

Download or read book Template Polymerization written by Stefan Polowinski and published by ChemTec Publishing. This book was released on 1997 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Template polymerization is a new field in polymer synthesis but common practice in the biosynthesis since DNA is the most popular template or matrix on which proteins are built by living species. This field is relevant to the synthesis of polymers of controlled structure but its application goes beyond the synthesis. Materials are formulated in complex mixtures always containing components which can be regarded as templates on which other materials are formed, modified, or are interacted with. In the new product development the relevance of these phenomena is controlled by the order of addition which affects probabilities and preferences of interaction. The current publication outlines mechanisms of template polymerization, polycondensation, and copolymerization. These mechanisms, illustrated with numerous examples, indicate a range of possibilities which can be encountered in materials and utilized to modify their properties. Orientation of substrates on template and their effect on modification of their reactivity and properties such as, for example, absorption of light or water are also discussed. Several chapters contain information on these studies discussed with sufficient detail to give reader comprehensive understanding of the methods used in various research laboratories and their findings."--Publisher's description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the first symposium on Recent Advances in Adhesion, held September, 1971 in Washington, D. C. , this Division of the American Chemical Society has continuously sponsored several symposia on adhesion and adhesives. The chemists have gradually realized the importance of adhesion in various fields of science and technology. During these years, the science of adhesion has steadily grown along with progress in surface science and fracture mechanics. Moreover, new adhesives have been invented and applied in actual structures, for example, structural and aerospace adhesives. In response to socio-economic demands, new forms of adhesives have been introduced to combat the problems of pollution and to promote energy-conservation. The developments of hot-melt adhesives, waterborne adhesives, and radiation-curable adhesives are vivid examples of successes in solving some of the problems. As chemists, our hatural desire is to understand how those new adhesives and new forms of adhesives are made. Thus, we are interested in learning about the chemistry of adhesives so that we may create new generations of materials to satisfy future needs. It was based on this common interest that w~ set forth to org'anize this Symposium on Recent Developments in Adhesive Chemistry. It was held from March 21 through 23, 1983 in the Westin Hotel, Seattle, Washington. The Symposium was very well attended. As a matter of fact, for the first two sessions, we had to move from the smaller Mt. St.
