Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monoamine Oxidases and Their Selective Inhibition, Volume IV, documents the proceedings of the 3rd Congress of the Hungarian Pharmacological Society held in Budapest, 1979. The discovery of the selective monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors, such as clorgyline and deprenyl, has given a new impetus to MAO research as well as to the clinical applicability of these compounds. This volume contains 21 papers by researchers and clinicians from eight different countries. It begins with papers on the pharmacological effects and the biochemical mode of actions of deprenyl as well as some other new selective inhibitors. This is followed by communications concerning the biochemical methods applied in the study of the nature of MAO in the mitochondrial membrane. Finally, the neurologists provide an account of their experience with the clinical application of deprenyl, and other inhibitors in Parkinsonian patients. They also discuss the essential role of the dopaminergic mechanism with respect to the disease.

Book excerpt: The papers in this volume are the invited lectures at the Second Workshop on Amine Oxidases held at the Biomedical Center, Uppsala University, 2 to 4 August 1986. It was a great pleasure for the organizers to see, in Uppsala, so many old and new friends, all brought together by our common interest in the fascinating field of Amine Oxidases. The Workshop was the successor of a long row of successful predecessors to start with the 1972 meeting in Cagliari, Sardinia, and recently preceded by the first meeting of Workshop design, held in Cambridge 1984. Several of the previous meetings have been dedicated to distinguished senior research workers within the field. To start this Workshop a memorial lecture was given. This lecture, given by Prof. T. P. Singer, was dedicated to the late Prof. K. Kamijo, who was one of the pioneers of what is now worldwide interest in Amine Oxidases and who organized the superb meeting in Hakone 1981. To the great honour of all the participants the family of the late Prof. Kamijo visited the Workshop. Abstracts of all the presentations have been published as a Supplement of Acta Pharmacologica et Toxicologica (Copenhagen).

  • Pages : 821 pages

Download or read book Fluorine and Health written by Alain Tressaud and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2008-06-06 with total page 821 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluorine and Health presents a critical multidisciplinary overview on the contribution of fluorinated compounds to resolve the important global issue of medicinal monitoring and health care. The involved subjects are organized in three thematic parts devoted to Molecular Imaging, Biomedical Materials and Pharmaceuticals. Initially the key-position of partially fluorinated low molecular weight compounds labelled either with the natural 19F-isotope for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) or labelled with the radioactive [18F]-isotope for Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is highlighted. Both non-invasive methods belong to the most challenging in vivo imaging techniques in oncology, neurology and in cardiology for the diagnosis of diseases having the highest mortality in the industrialized countries. The manifold facets of fluorinated biomaterials range from inorganic ceramics to perfluorinated organic molecules. Liquid perfluorocarbons are suitable for oxygen transport and as potential respiratory gas carriers, while fluorinated polymers are connected to the pathology of blood vessels. Another important issue concerns the application of highly fluorinated liquids in ophthalmology. Moreover, fluorine is an essential trace element in bone mineral, dentine and tooth enamel and is applied for the prophylaxis and treatment of dental caries. The various origins of human exposure to fluoride species is detailed to promote a better understanding of the effect of fluoride species on living organisms.Medicinally relevant fluorinated molecules and their interactions with native proteins are the main focus of the third part. New molecules fluorinated in strategic position are crucial for the development of pharmaceuticals with desired action and optimal pharmacological profile. Among the hundreds of marketed active drug components there are more than 150 fluorinated compounds. The chapters will illustrate how the presence of fluorine atoms alters properties of bioactive compounds at various biochemical steps, and possibly facilitate its emergence as pharmaceuticals. Finally the synthetic potential of a fluorinase, the first C-F bond forming enzyme, is summarized. New approach of topics involving chemistry, biology and medicinal techniques Transdisciplinar papers on fluoride products Importance of fluoride products in health Updated data on specific topics

Book MAO The Mother of all Amine Oxidases

Download or read book MAO The Mother of all Amine Oxidases written by J. P. M. Finberg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1998 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monoamine oxidase (MAO) is linked to psychiatric and neurological disorders, because inhibitors of the enzyme are used clinically for treatment of affective disorders and Parkinsona (TM)s disease. One of the interesting new aspects of MAO is the occurrence in the human population of deletions of genes coding for one or the other enzyme subtype (A or B). This leads to the possibility of a genetic basis for psychiatric disorders based on MAO. Subjects with deletions of type A or B, and combined deletions, have been described. In the first group of 6 papers in this book, the occurrence and characterization of these phenotypes, as well as the structure of MAO genes, is explored. Advances in the biochemistry of MAO subtypes and their physiological function and localization in brain and periphery is included. Other sections of the book deal with the neuroprotective action of MAO inhibitors and their pharmacology, especially the pharmacology of new MAO-B inhibitors.

Book Pharmacology and Therapeutics for Dentistry E Book

Download or read book Pharmacology and Therapeutics for Dentistry E Book written by John A. Yagiela and published by Elsevier Health Sciences. This book was released on 2010-03-19 with total page 960 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Use your knowledge of pharmacology to enhance oral care! Pharmacology and Therapeutics for Dentistry, 6th Edition describes how to evaluate a patient’s health and optimize dental treatment by factoring in the drugs they take. It explores the basic fundamentals of pharmacology, special topics such as pain control, fear and anxiety, and oral complications of cancer therapy, and most importantly, the actions of specific drug groups on the human body. Whether you’re concerned about the drugs a patient is already taking or the drugs you prescribe for treatment, this book helps you reduce risk and provide effective dental care. An emphasis on the dental applications of pharmacology relates drugs to dental considerations in clinical practice. Dental aspects of many drug classes are expanded to include antibiotics, analgesics, and anesthetics. The Alternative Medicine in Dentistry chapter discusses chemicals used as alternative medicines and assesses their potential benefits and risks. The Nonopioid Analgesics chapter groups together non-opioid analgesics, nonsterioidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and antirheumatic and antigout drugs, making these easier to locate and study. Coverage of the endocrine system includes four separate chapters for the most comprehensive coverage. Drug Interactions in Clinical Dentistry appendix lists potential interactions between drugs a patient is taking for nondental conditions and drugs that may be used or prescribed during dental treatment, including effects and recommendations. Glossary of Abbreviations appendix includes the most common abbreviations used for drugs or conditions. New Pharmacogenetics and Pharmacogenomics chapter covers the effects of genetic traits of patients on their responses to drugs. A NEW introductory section offers tips for the study of dental pharmacology and relates pharmacology to dental considerations. An updated discussion of drug-drug interactions covers the harmful effects of mixing medications. Coverage of adverse effects and mechanisms of COX-2 inhibitors, antibiotic prophylaxis, and antiplaque agents explains the dental risks relating to common drug treatments.

Download or read book Drug Discovery written by Robert A. Maxwell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This treatise had its origins in the authors' strong opinion that the discovery of new drugs, especially of innovative therapeutic agents, really does not happen as a spontaneous sequel to investiga tive research, no matter how penetrating such research may be. Rather, it seemed to us that the discovery of innovative therapeutic agents was a very active process, existing in and of itself, and demanding full attention-it was not simply a passive, dependent by-process of investigative research. And yet, many researchers some close confreres of the authors, others more distant-believed otherwise. We felt that their view reflected unrealistic thinking and that reality probably lay closer to what Beyer" maintained: We are taught to believe that if we can understand a disease it should be easy enough to figure out, say, the molecular configuration of a definitive receptor mechanism somewhere along the line and to design a specific drug . . . . And so we start out to understand the disease but never get around to doing much about therapy. The authors very soon realized that there was essentially no quantitive information available on just where and how innovative therapeutic agents were discovered. There were only anecdotal accounts, and these were able to be selected and presented in ways that could be used to defend any point of view.
