Guizot, in his History of Civilization, says that civilization seems to him to be the sum, the expression of the whole life of nations. He defines it as a fact subsisting on two conditions and manifesting itself by two symptoms, the development of social activity and that of individual activity; the progress of society and the progress of humanity. To one of our day, looking from an environment which is characterised by so high a degree of individual and social activity, back to a less fortunate age, it would be hard to find anything of greater interest than an attempt to discover what has brought about the change. Encouraged by the statement of M. Guizot that, if limited to certain centuries and certain people, this civilization is a fact which may be described, related, we have attempted within very narrow limits of time and space a study of the work of a single class, that of the monks, toward the furtherance of the progress of society and the progress of humanity. Early England makes a particularly fortunate subject for such a study, in that valuable testimony is given by one of the monks themselves, the venerable Bede. His Ecclesiastical History of the English nation, which was finished in 731, is made up of the results of his personal knowledge and of material which he gained from correspondence with people in other parts of the island, from the archives of the church at Rome, parts of which were copied by a friendly monk, from earlier written records and from traditional accounts. These materials were gathered and put together with the thoroughness and carefulness of an author whose habits and instincts were those of a scholar, and whose familiarity with the scenes and atmosphere which he described give to his narrative a peculiar vividness. The low seat perhaps typifies the stool of repentance; but until the reception is over one hardly likes to speculate on the meaning of things. One of the novices is a man, and the other a girl. Two by two the fraternity have entered into this ark; and two by two they go out of it. So much only is known to the outer world. The man is about thirty years of age, with bright eyes, and smooth-shaven chin and cheek. If the light was better, you would make out that he has a humorous twinkle in his eyes, and that his lips, which are thin, have got a trick of smiling at nothing - at the memory, the anticipation, the mere imagined umbra of a good thing. This kind of second sight is useful for keeping the spirits at a uniform temperature, a simmering rather than a bubbling of cheerfulness. The unhappy people who have it not are melancholy in solitude, rush into any kind of company, often take to drink, commit atrocious crimes while drunk, and hang themselves in prison. Mr. Roger Exton will never, it is very certain, come to this melancholy end. He is extremely thin, and rather tall; also his face is brown, of that colour which comes of long residence in hot climates. Book excerpt: A Monastic Renaissance at St Albans is a study of intellectual life at the abbey of St Albans - one of Britain's greatest Benedictine monasteries - during the lifetime of Thomas Walsingham (c.1340-1422), one of the most prolific scholars of the later middle ages. It has always been assumed that the monasteries fell into decline long before the dissolution and that cultural and intellectual activities were largely abandoned as the monks surrendered themselves to high living and low morals. This study challenges this view. Drawing on a wide variety of manuscript sources, it shows that education, independent study, and even the co-ordinated copying of books continued to flourish at St Albans (and its affiliate houses) for much of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. In fact the abbey emerged as one of the country's most influential centres of learning, a clearing-house for books and ideas in Ricardian and Lancastrian England. Thomas Walsingham himself played a key part in this renaissance in monastic studies; his works were copied and circulated throughout the St Albans network and his influence acted upon the next generation of monastic readers and writers. Walsingham was not only a compiler of contemporary chronicles but also a Classical scholar of extraordinary originality. His commentary on Ovid's Metamorphoses, his re-working of the histories of Alexander of Macedon and the Trojan War, and his Genealogia deorum gentilium, are discussed in detail here for the first time. Walsingham's interest in the Classics was shared by many of his St Albans colleagues, and they in turn were members of a wider circle of literary scholars, which included the London schoolmaster, John Seward. The work of these scholars, monastic and secular, points towards a revival of Classical and literary scholarship in England long before Italian humanism and other traces of the continental Renaissance first found their way into the country.

Brink's English Classical Scholarship is the first sustained treatment since the early years of this century of the historical development of English classical scholarship. Brink shows the effect of the Italian Renaissance on nascent English scholarship and examines the contribution made by 17th century scholars such as Bishop Pearson and Thomas Gataker. He deals at length with the life of Richard Bentley, his troubled careers master of Trinity College, Cambridge, and above all the immenseadvances he made in classical studies, which were in turn developed by Richard Porson. He also shows how, paradoxically, in the Victorian era, while a classical education was seen as the key to advancement, classical scholarship almost wholly stagnated. Although the tradition of Bentley and Porson all but disappeared in England, it was nurtured by the great German scholars of the nineteenth century. It was only with the work of A. E. Housman that the tradition of the greatest classical scholars returned to its native land and Professor Brink shows how it began again to make a contribution to the 'European fund'.
