Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone knows the feeling: you're trapped in an endless meeting or held hostage on the phone by a droning client. Or maybe the minutes are just ticking by very slowly. What can you do? Doodle, of course! Susan McBride--who put some fun in kids' schooldays with The Don't Get Caught Doodle Notebook and The I'm So Bored Doodle Notebook--now comes to the aid of adults who need a break from the daily grind. Though this humorous interactive book looks like an everyday planner--complete with charts and graphs to confuse anyone who sneaks a peek--it's really a little bit of subversive escapism. That's because inside are dozens of creative ways to doodle, including warm-ups to unleash your inner artist. Vent pent-up aggressions with voodoodling. Illustrate what your co-workers--from the lunch stealer to the obnoxiously perky intern--look like through your keen eyes. Explore the "Lame Excuses Hall of Fame." There's even a little "doodling analysis" provided--so you can find out what your art really means.

Book excerpt: Hile his expected macho super-patriotism is very much in evidence, Liddy (Will: An Autobiography) adds an interesting twist to his latest thriller. Ex-Navy SEAL Michael Stone is jolted out of his placid real-estate law practice when the sister of a Vietnam buddy is arrested for trespassing at a chemical plant run by a West German corporation in New York's Hudson Valley. The Germans, led by the ruthless Metz, try to retrieve animal rights activist Sara Rosen's photos of an animal-experimentation lab and to intimidate Mike with a vicious biker gang. After Sara and her inept, idealist boyfriend get themselves into dire peril, Stone, with a trio of former SEALs and Sara's brother, comes to the rescue. Their next job is to stop international terrorists from wiping out Manhattan. The derring is done very well, with graphic details built around shocking descriptions of animal experimentation. What may surprise readers is Liddy's convincing case against unnecessary, FDA-forced cruelty to animals. The ending is a bit abrupt, but otherwise Liddy's touch is deft.

Book Doomi Golo The Hidden Notebooks

Download or read book Doomi Golo The Hidden Notebooks written by Boubacar Boris Diop and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2016-11-01 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first novel to be translated from Wolof to English, Doomi Golo—The Hidden Notebooks is a masterful work that conveys the story of Nguirane Faye and his attempts to communicate with his grandson before he dies. With a narrative structure that beautifully imitates the movements of a musical piece, Diop relates Faye’s trauma of losing his only son, Assane Tall, which is compounded by his grandson Badou’s migration to an unknown destination. While Faye feels certain that his grandson will return one day, he also is convinced that he will no longer be alive by then. Faye spends his days sitting under a mango tree in the courtyard of his home, reminiscing and observing his surroundings. He speaks to Badou through his seven notebooks, six of which are revealed to the reader, while the seventh, the “Book of Secrets,” is highly confidential and reserved for Badou’s eyes only. In the absence of letters from Badou, the notebooks form the only possible means of communication between the two, carrying within them tunes and repetitions that give this novel its unusual shape: loose and meandering on the one hand, coherent and tightly interwoven on the other. Translated by Vera Wülfing-Leckie and El Hadji Moustapha Diop.

Book Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge A Novel

Download or read book Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge A Novel written by Rainer Maria Rilke and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2022-11-29 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A stunning, revelatory new translation of the only novel by one of the greatest poets of the twentieth century, from one of “the most trustworthy and exhilarating of Rilke’s contemporary translators” (Michael Dirda, Washington Post). A groundbreaking masterpiece of early European modernism originally published in 1910, The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge unspools the vivid reflections of the titular young Danish nobleman and poet. From his Paris garret, Brigge records his encounters with the city and its outcasts, muses on his family history, and lays bare his earliest experiences of fear, tenderness, and desolation. With a poet’s feel for language and a keen instinct for storytelling, Rainer Maria Rilke forges a dazzlingly fractured coming-of-age narrative, kaleidoscopic in its alternation of vivid present encounters and equally alive memories of childhood. Strikingly contemporary, The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge reveals a writer metabolizing his own experiences to yield still-essential questions about fiction and reality, empathy and psychosis, and—above all—life, love, and death. In a fascinating introduction, award-winning translator Edward Snow explores the overlaps between Rilke’s experiences and those of his protagonist, and shows with granular attention the novel’s capacity for nuance and sympathy. Snow’s exquisite translation captures as never before the astonishing cadences and musical clarity of the poet’s prose. It reveals The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge as an urgent contemporary achievement, more than one hundred years after it was written.
