  • Publisher : University of Toronto Press
  • Release : 1994-01-01

Download or read book Touch Monkeys written by Marnie Parsons and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All too often Nonsense is relegated to the nursery. Marnie Parsons argues that, rather than being mere child's play, nonsense is a major force in poetic language. In Touch Monkeys she presents us with an original approach to a much-maligned linguistic pursuit. Parsons distinguishes between nonsense language and Nonsense, the genre. Her major chapters work towards a vision of nonsense language as palimpsestic - as involving the overlaying of several ways of making meaning on a verbal sense system, and the consequent disruption of that system. This reading of nonsense is itself an intersection, bringing together historical and contemporary criticism of literary Nonsense and a wide range of poetic and literary theories. Using Carroll and Lear as examples of Nonsense, Parsons provides a survey of existing Nonsense criticism in English, and then extends and elaborates nonsense in theoretical directions set by Gilles Deleuze and Julia Kristeva, among others, and by the poetics of such writers as Charles Olson, Charles Bernstein, Ron Silliman, Steve McCaffery, Louis Zukofsky, and Daphne Marlatt. Following each chapter is a close reading of work by writers as varied as Rudyard Kipling, Colleen Thibaudeau, Adrienne Rich, and Lyn Hejinian. These readings provide practical applications of nonsense theory and establish the interdependence of theory and practice. Nonsense inhabits and challenges traditional forms simultaneously; in Touch Monkeys Parsons enters into the spirit of the genre.

  • Author : Alfred L. Rosenberger
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2020-09
  • ISBN : 0691143641

Download or read book New World Monkeys written by Alfred L. Rosenberger and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-09 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book is a broad synthesis of new world monkey evolution, integrating their unique evolutionary story into the bigger picture of primate evolution and Amazon biodiversity. Capsule For more than 30 million years, New World monkeys have inhabited the forests of South and Central America. Whether these primates originally came from Africa by rafting across the Atlantic or crossing overland from North America, they soon flourished. This book tells the story of these New World monkeys. Integrating data from fossil and living animals, it explores the evolution of the three major New World monkey lineages as well as how they fit into the broader story of primate evolution and Amazon biodiversity. After providing readers with necessary background in primate taxonomy and systematics, Rosenberger shows that the notion of adaptive zones is central to our understanding of primate evolution. The idea of adaptive zones can explain how radiations evolve, morphological adaptations appear, and communities form. From here, Rosenberger synthesizes what is known about New World monkeys' unique ecological adaptations, including those involving feeding and locomotion, as well as their social behaviour. The book's concluding chapters explore theories of how primates first arrived in South America and what their future looks like given the threat of extinction. Biography Internal Use Only Alfred L. Rosenberger is Professor Emeritus of Biological Anthropology at Brooklyn College. An expert on the origin and evolution of New World Monkeys, Rosenberger has contributed numerous articles in edited volumes and his work is published in journals such as Nature, Journal of Human Evolution and American Journal of Primatology . Audience The audience for this book is scholars and graduate students in biological/physical anthropolog and primatology, and to a lesser extent conservation biology, evolutionary biology, and behavioral ecology . Book Monks are from Meditating Monkeys

Download or read book Monks are from Meditating Monkeys written by Dr. G.K. Pillai and published by Notion Press. This book was released on with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This extraordinary book unveils the scientific source of true spirituality. A vision of reality emerges when the brain is in the grip of “near-death” frenzy. The dominant ego declines and consciousness shifts to the right side of the brain. True mystics like Ramana Maharshi meditated up on the dazzling vision and reached “nirvana”, the culmination of spiritual quest. The god men, who sell yoga, meditation, and salvation, are self-centered mimics with inflated ego and greed. The facts now revealed by brain scans might debunk the divine comedy of fake monks misleading the masses? Drug-induced euphoria of “Meditating Monkeys” cannot take humans to lasting bliss and calmness. The only authentic route to sustainable spiritual transformation is shifting consciousness through egoless meditation. Universal compassion is the prominent expression of true enlightenment. The transition of mystics from the ordinary to the sublime can motivate the modern youth to achieve similar awakening. This book shows the reality but faiths may deny it with divine deceptions."

Book Kasey to the Rescue

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ellen Rogers
  • Publisher : Hyperion
  • Release : 2010-11-02
  • ISBN : 1401396305
  • Pages : 188 pages

Download or read book Kasey to the Rescue written by Ellen Rogers and published by Hyperion. This book was released on 2010-11-02 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a story of how miracles DO happen. How courage and a never-give-up spirit can emerge victorious. How an engaging little monkey helped change a family's life. Ellen Rogers considered herself something of a tragedy snob. The single mother of five believed she could weather any storm, that she could keep her family from harm with fortitude and grace. But nothing could have prepared her for the June 2005 car accident that left her son, Ned--then 22 years old--fighting for his life. Ellen refused to give in to despair. We'll get through this, she told herself. We have to. But love and determination can only go so far, and the road home was fraught with obstacles. Ellen and Ned took comfort in family and friends. And they prayed for a miracle. Miracles happen to those who believe, the saying goes, but who would have believed that one family's "miracle" would weigh in at five pounds sopping wet? Then Helping Hands: Monkey Helpers for the Disabled provided Ned with an affectionate and intelligent service animal with a steadfast devotion to hierarchy, a longing for "spa days," and a craving for Gummi Bears. In other words, a diva. Life with Kasey was yet another challenge for this large and lively family, but they persevered as families do, and in time this wise and sensitive animal did more than help Ned cope with his disabilities--she turned the simple tasks of life into a life worth living. Kasey's astonishing intelligence and compassion brought hope and laughter back to a family facing its greatest challenge, and helped them see the world in a new way.
