Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WILDLAND RECREATION THE AUTHORITATIVE GUIDE TO UNDERSTANDING AND MANAGING THE ECOLOGICAL IMPACTS OF RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES IN WILDLANDS This third edition provides an updated and thorough examination of the ecological impacts of recreational use on wildlands and the best management practices to employ in places where recreation and preservation of natural conditions are important – and often conflicting – objectives. Covering the latest research, this edition provides detailed information about the environmental changes that result from recreational use. It describes spatial patterns of impact and trends over time, and then explores the factors that determine the magnitude of impact, including the amount of use, the type and behavior of use, and the environmental durability. Numerous examples, drawn from parks and recreation areas around the world, give readers an insight into why certain areas are more heavily damaged than others, and demonstrate the techniques available to mitigate damage. The book incorporates both the first-hand experience of the authors and an exhaustive review of the world’s literature on the subject. Boxes provide quick access to important material, and further resources are referenced in an extensive bibliography. Essential reading for all park and protected area management professionals, this book is also a useful textbook for upper division undergraduate and graduate students on recreation ecology and recreation management courses.

Book Glacier Monitoring in the Southwest Alaska Network

Download or read book Glacier Monitoring in the Southwest Alaska Network written by Bruce Griffen and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Glaciers are intricately related to climate and are indicators of regional climate change. The scientific community, the public and park visitors are becoming more aware and concerned about how regional and global climate change will impact the natural resources of parks all across the nation. Glaciers are a key component of the naturally functioning terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems of the Southwest Alaska Inventory and Monitoring Network (SWAN) parks. Together, these interrelated natural resources create the wilderness scenic beauty and quality that is the SWAN. About 50% of Kenai Fjords National Park, 20% of Lake Clark National Park and Preserve and 6% of Katmai National Park and Preserve is covered by glaciers. For these reasons, the Southwest Alaska Inventory and Monitoring Network identified Glacier Extent as a vital sign. This document presents the protocol for mapping and monitoring glacier extent in the SWAN.

Book Path Distance Analysis to Determine Accessibility for Long Term Vegetation Monitoring Program Lake Clark National Park and Preserve

Download or read book Path Distance Analysis to Determine Accessibility for Long Term Vegetation Monitoring Program Lake Clark National Park and Preserve written by National Park Service and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-09-17 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alaskan national parks include some of the last remaining wilderness areas of the world. In order to protect and manage these parks, National Park Service (NPS) managers need to know how and why park ecosystems change over time, and what amount of change is within the historic range of variability. The Service's Inventory and Monitoring (I&M) Program addresses this need by providing park managers with information on status and trends for key elements of park ecosystems. The Southwest Alaska Network (SWAN), one of 32 monitoring networks in the I&M Program, has identified a suite of physical and biological elements for monitoring. Many of these require ground-based sampling.
