Book Biotic and Abiotic Stress Tolerance in Plants

Download or read book Biotic and Abiotic Stress Tolerance in Plants written by Sharad Vats and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-11 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights some of the most important biochemical, physiological and molecular aspects of plant stress, together with the latest updates. It is divided into 14 chapters, written by eminent experts from around the globe and highlighting the effects of plant stress (biotic and abiotic) on the photosynthetic apparatus, metabolites, programmed cell death, germination etc. In turn, the role of beneficial elements, glutathione-S-transferase, phosphite and nitric oxide in the adaptive response of plants under stress and as a stimulator of better plant performance is also discussed. A dedicated chapter addresses research advances in connection with Capsicum, a commercially important plant, and stress tolerance, from classical breeding to the recent use of large-scale transcriptome and genome sequencing technologies. The book also explores the significance of the liliputians of the plant kingdom (Bryophytes) as biomonitors/bioindicators, and general and specialized bioinformatics resources that can benefit anyone working in the field of plant stress biology. Given the information compiled here, the book will offer a valuable guide for students and researchers of plant molecular biology and stress physiology alike.

Book Moss Biomonitoring of Trace Element Deposition in Northwestern British Columbia

Download or read book Moss Biomonitoring of Trace Element Deposition in Northwestern British Columbia written by Phaedra Cowden and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atmospheric pollutant deposition poses arisk to ecosystem health; therefore, monitoringthespatial and temporal trendsof depositionis integralto environmental sustainability. Although moss biomonitoring is a common method to monitor various pollutantsin Europe,offeringacost-effective approach compared to traditionalmethods of monitoring, it is rarely used in Canada. The focus of this study wasa spatial assessment of trace element depositionacross a region with a known large-pointsourceof emissions usingthe moss biomonitoring method. Moss tissues presented strong correlations with modelled deposition in the region, suggestingmosses are avaluable biomonitoring tool of trace element deposition, especially in regions dominated by large-point emission sources.Additionally, a mossspecies endemic to Canada wascompared to commonly used moss specieswith results indicatingthisspecies(Isotheciumstoloniferum)can be used reliably as a biomonitor. Moss biomonitoring is recommended as a compliment tofill in spatial gaps incurrentmonitoring networks across the country.KEYWORDS:biomonitoring, bryophytes, moss, trace elements, Hylocomium splendens, Pleurozium schreberi, Isothecium stoloniferum.

Book Abiotic and Biotic Stress in Plants

Download or read book Abiotic and Biotic Stress in Plants written by Arun Shanker and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2016-02-17 with total page 770 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The impact of global climate change on crop production has emerged as a major research priority during the past decade. Understanding abiotic stress factors such as temperature and drought tolerance and biotic stress tolerance traits such as insect pest and pathogen resistance in combination with high yield in plants is of paramount importance to counter climate change related adverse effects on the productivity of crops. In this multi-authored book, we present synthesis of information for developing strategies to combat plant stress. Our effort here is to present a judicious mixture of basic as well as applied research outlooks so as to interest workers in all areas of plant science. We trust that the information covered in this book would bridge the much-researched area of stress in plants with the much-needed information for evolving climate-ready crop cultivars to ensure food security in the future.

Book Chemical Evolution

    Book Details:
  • Author : Bernd Markert
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2015-02-19
  • ISBN : 3319143557
  • Pages : 295 pages

Download or read book Chemical Evolution written by Bernd Markert and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-02-19 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is written for researchers and students interested in the function and role of chemical elements in biological or environmental systems. Experts have long known that the Periodic System of Elements (PSE) provides only an inadequate chemical description of elements of biological, environmental or medicinal importance. This book explores the notion of a Biological System of the Elements (BSE) established on accurate and precise multi-element data, including evolutionary aspects, representative sampling procedures, inter-element relationships, the physiological function of elements and uptake mechanisms. The book further explores the concept Stoichiometric Network Analysis (SNA) to analyze the biological roles of chemical species. Also discussed is the idea of ecotoxicological identity cards which give a first-hand description of properties relevant for biological and toxicological features of a certain chemical element and its geo biochemically plausible speciation form. The focus of this book goes beyond both classical bioinorganic chemistry and toxicology.

Book Plants on Plants The Biology of Vascular Epiphytes

Download or read book Plants on Plants The Biology of Vascular Epiphytes written by Gerhard Zotz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book critically reviews advances in our understanding of the biology of vascular epiphytes since Andreas Schimper’s 1888 seminal work. It addresses all aspects of their biology, from anatomy and physiology to ecology and evolution, in the context of general biological principles. By comparing epiphytes with non-epiphytes throughout, it offers a valuable resource for researchers in plant sciences and related disciplines. A particular strength is the identification of research areas that have not received the attention they deserve, with conservation being a case in point. Scientists have tended to study pristine systems, but global developments call for information on epiphytes in human-disturbed systems and the response of epiphytes to global climate change.
