Book Evaluation of Exclusive Heavy vehicle Lanes on the Interstate Highway 35 Corridor in Austin Texas

Download or read book Evaluation of Exclusive Heavy vehicle Lanes on the Interstate Highway 35 Corridor in Austin Texas written by Charles Taylor Mansfield and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to evaluate potential travel time impacts of the implementation of exclusive heavy-vehicle lanes on the Interstate Highway 35 (IH 35) corridor, in the Austin metropolitan area. The analysis considers heavy vehicles (trucks) and non-heavy vehicles (cars) as separate system elements and as an integrated system. The study modeled traffic operations on IH 35, during the AM and PM peak hours, under two traffic scenarios, Existing and Inside Truck-Only Lanes using the software VISSIM 5.4. The limits of the study are FM 1431 in Round Rock, on the north, and SH 45 near Buda, on the south. The Existing scenario modeled traffic operations under current IH 35 geometric conditions and traffic control rules, in which trucks are prohibited from the inside lane and cars are allowed in all lanes. The Inside Truck-Only Lanes scenario modeled traffic operations under the assumption that trucks are restricted to the inside lane only and cars are prohibited from the inside lane. Travel times across the study area corridor were measured in the models to compare the performance of the Inside Truck-Only Lanes scenario relative to the Existing scenario.

Book Improving Traffic Control Effectiveness in Complex Work Zones

Download or read book Improving Traffic Control Effectiveness in Complex Work Zones written by Gerald L. Ullman and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information from driver studies performed during the first year of the project identified several features and conditions that created confusion and anxiety in traversing the work zone. Many of these conditions represented deficiencies in the work zone traffic control from the standpoint of positive guidance principles. This report describes the efforts to tailor the application of positive guidance procedures to work zone traffic control installations reviews. Four key steps, hazard visibility assessment, expectancy violation determination, information load analysis, and information needs specification, are described in the context of traffic control at potentially complex work zones. A methodology is presented for applying these steps in a field review process to be performed as part of the work zone traffic control installation process.

Book Strategies for Separating Trucks from Passenger Vehicles

Download or read book Strategies for Separating Trucks from Passenger Vehicles written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the Truck Facility Guidebook is to assist Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) engineers in understanding and replicating the process used by researchers to determine the need for truck treatments. This Guidebook provides criteria to assist TxDOT in choosing among the three types of truck facilities: 1) lane restrictions, 2) dedicated truck lanes, and 3) exclusive truck roadways. The Guidebook primarily focuses on the third type, exclusive truck roadways, and guides users through a nine-step process to determine the need for these facilities. The nine steps are as follows: (1) Acquire truck and non-truck volume; (2) Predict future truck and non-truck volume; (3) Determine desired level of service; (4) Determine number of truck roadway lanes; (5) Acquire crash data and estimate crash costs; (6) Determine initial construction cost; (7) Determine costs of delay and fuel consumption; (8) Determine user perspectives and other measures of acceptability; and (9) Total all benefits and costs.
