Book Integral and Semi Integral Bridges

Download or read book Integral and Semi Integral Bridges written by Martin P Burke Jr and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-06-17 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Worldwide, integral type bridges are being used in greater numbersin lieu of jointed bridges because of their structural simplicity,first-cost economy, and outstanding durability. In the UK and theUS states of Tennessee and Missouri, for example, the constructionof most moderate length bridges is based on the integral bridgeconcept. The state of Washington uses semi-integral bridges almostexclusively, while, depending on subfoundation characteristics, thestate of Ohio and others use a mix of these two bridge types. Integral and Semi-Integral Bridges has been written by apracticing bridge design engineer who has spent his entire careerinvolved in the origination, evaluation and design of such bridgesin the USA, where they have been in use since the late1930’s. This work shows how the analytical complexity due tothe elimination of movable joints can be minimized to negligiblelevels so that most moderate length bridges can be easily andquickly modified or replaced with either integral or semi-integralbridges. Bridge design, construction, and maintenance engineers; bridgedesign administrators; graduate level engineering students andstructural research professionals will all find this bookexceptionally informative for a wide range of highway bridgeapplications.

Book Instrumentation and Monitoring of Integral Bridge Abutment to approach Slab Connection

Download or read book Instrumentation and Monitoring of Integral Bridge Abutment to approach Slab Connection written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Iowa Department of Transportation has long recognized that approach slab pavements of integral abutment bridges are prone to settlement and cracking, which manifests as the "bump at the end of the bridge". A commonly recommended solution is to integrally attach the approach slab to the bridge abutment. Two different approach slabs, one being precast concrete and the other being cast-in-place concrete, were integrally connected to side-by-side bridges and investigated. The primary objective of this investigation was to evaluate the approach slab performance and the impacts the approach slabs have on the bridge. To satisfy the research needs, the project scope involved a literature review, survey of Midwest Department of Transportation current practices, implementing a health monitoring system on the bridge and approach slab, interpreting the data obtained during the evaluation, and conducting periodic visual inspections. Based on the information obtained from the testing the following general conclusions were made: The integral connection between the approach slabs and the bridges appear to function well with no observed distress at this location and no relative longitudinal movement measured between the two components; Tying the approach slab to the bridge appears to impact the bridge; The two different approach slabs, the longer precast slab and the shorter cast-in-place slab, appear to impact the bridge differently; The measured strains in the approach slabs indicate a force exists at the expansion joint and should be taken into consideration when designing both the approach slab and the bridge; The observed responses generally followed an annual cyclic and/or short term cyclic pattern over time.

Book Verification of Performance and Design Criteria for High Performance Steel Bridges

Download or read book Verification of Performance and Design Criteria for High Performance Steel Bridges written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High Performance Steel (HPS) has quickly gained popularity in United States bridge applications due to its high yield strength and better weldability, toughness, ductility, and weathering characteristics. However, a great deal of information is missing from the body of knowledge on HPS performance and design criteria, especially concerning HPS-70W (485W) produced by thermo-mechanical controlled processing (TMCP). This research examines material characteristics and fatigue performance of HPS-70W (485W) TMCP, as well the performance of Ohio's first HPS bridge in service. Data from 96 tensile tests show that yield and ultimate strengths of HPS-70W (485W) TMCP are dependent upon plate thickness and orientation. 75 Charpy V-Notch (CVN) specimens were tested, and all met the ASTM A709 requirement for minimum toughness. Twenty-nine specimens were tested to investigate the fatigue resistance of continuous plates with punched, drilled, and reamed holes. Results from this investigation suggest that current restrictions mandated by some state departments of transportation concerning punching holes are not overly restrictive when HPS-485W (70W) is utilized. Performance of drilled and sub-punched and reamed specimens met or exceeded American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) (2004) requirements for Category B details. Performance of Submerged Arc Weld (SAW) and Narrow Gap Improved Electroslag Weld (NGI-ESW) welded butt-splices utilizing HPS-70W (485W) were examined. All specimens performed considerably better than predicted by the AASHTO fatigue life equation.

Book Integral Bridges

Download or read book Integral Bridges written by George L. England and published by Thomas Telford. This book was released on 2000 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work was commissioned by the Highways Agency to produce guidance for bridge designers by addressing the thermally induced soil/structure integration problem created by environmental changes of temperature and the associated cyclical displacements imposed on the granular backfill to the bridge abutments. It develops a better theoretical understanding of the cyclic performance, in particular the strain racheting in the backfill soil when in contact with a stiff structure. It also identifies the governing soil parameters and examines their influence in the interaction problem, develops numerical modelling procedures to predict interactive soil behaviour, and identifies and quantifies the controlling features of bridge structures relevant to the interaction problem.
