Book Monitoring the Evolving Land Use Patterns on the Los Angeles Metropolitan Fringe Using Remote Sensing

Download or read book Monitoring the Evolving Land Use Patterns on the Los Angeles Metropolitan Fringe Using Remote Sensing written by Darryl R. Goehring and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapid, inexpensive methods of monitoring land use change can greatly facilitate the planning of urban fringe development by use of synoptic remotely sensed imagery and urban growth theory. The urbanization of Walnut Valley, California from 1953-71 prompted land use change from intensive von Thunen market-oriented patterns to extensive, disinvested, production-factor-minimized patterns. Aerial photography used synoptically recorded six periods of land use change that bracketed dates before and after the freeway was announced and built. Interpretations of these changes help to deal with rural-urban transition problems before they arise.

Book California s Dynamic Landscape Monitoring Ecological Response to Human Impact and Drought Using Satellite Imagery

Download or read book California s Dynamic Landscape Monitoring Ecological Response to Human Impact and Drought Using Satellite Imagery written by Katherine Sarah Willis and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Space-borne remote sensing is a rapidly evolving field and is exceptionally useful for monitoring landscape dynamics. The increasing impact of humans on natural ecosystems via land use change and climate change make ecological monitoring vital to environmental health. Human population levels are causing rapid changes in land cover and development, which in turn puts increasing stress on the natural landscape. Anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions have accelerated climate change causing varied unexpected changes to vegetation. The effects of increased frequency and intensity of drought in the western United States is an example of this which can be monitored using satellite imagery. This dissertation assesses how these human-induced threats are driving landscape changes and the application of remote sensing to assess the ecological impacts. To address these objectives, remote sensing is applied to natural resource monitoring for effective conservation-based land management (Chapter 2). These methods are then applied to various research, including monitoring ecological status of southern California National Parks (Chapter 3), assessment of the effects of drought on southern California native plants (Chapter 4) and on browning over California vegetation zones (Chapter 5). The remote sensing-based analyses utilize several best practice methods such as supervised classification and time series statistics to examine landscape changes throughout California. Outputs include a standardized protocol to determine future ecological conservation management actions, status reports on current and historical land use, publically available spatial datasets, and assessment of the California landscape and native species in response to 20th Century drought conditions.

Book Using Landsat TM Imagery to Monitor Vegetation Change Following Flow Restoration to the Lower Owens River California

Download or read book Using Landsat TM Imagery to Monitor Vegetation Change Following Flow Restoration to the Lower Owens River California written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rehabilitating river corridors to restore valuable riparian habitat consumes significant resources from both governments and private companies. Given these considerable expenditures, it is important to monitor the progress of such projects. This study evaluated the utility of using Landsat Thematic Mapper remotely-sensed data from 2002 and 2009 to monitor vegetation change induced by instream flow restoration to the Lower Owens River in central California. This study compared the results of an unsupervised classification with an NDVI threshold classification to appraise the resources required and effectiveness of each analysis method. The results were inspected by creating standard remote sensing accuracy error matrices and by correlating landscape pattern metrics with bird indicator species. Both sets of classified maps show a noticeable increase in riparian vegetation in the study area following flow restoration in 2006, indicating an improvement of the quality of bird habitat. The study concluded that analyzing vegetation change using the unsupervised classification technique required more effort, expert knowledge, and supplementary data than using the NDVI threshold method. If these prerequisites are met, the output from the unsupervised classification process produces a more precise map of land cover change than the NDVI threshold method. However, if an analyst is lacking either resources or ground verification data, the NDVI threshold technique is capable of providing a generalized, but still valid evaluation of vegetation change. This conclusion is supported by higher correlations between indicator bird species under the unsupervised classification method than were found with the NDVI threshold method.
