Book Developing the Blue Economy

Download or read book Developing the Blue Economy written by Robert C. Brears and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-10-20 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally, the ocean economy is viewed solely as a mechanism for economic growth. In this business-as-usual approach, large-scale industrial economies have developed the ocean economy through the exploitation of maritime and marine resources, often without consideration of how those activities impact the future health or productivity of those same resources. This has led to aquatic ecosystems being viewed and treated as limitless resources; the marine environment becoming a dumping ground for waste; overfishing diminishing fishing stocks; ocean habitats being degraded from coastal developments; sea-level rise impacting coastal communities and infrastructure; increasing ocean acidification; and the marginalisation of poor coastal communities. Recognising the failings of the traditional ocean economy, there is a transition underway around the world towards the Blue Economy. This concept moves beyond the business-as-usual approach with economic development and ocean health complementary to one another. In the Blue Economy, the environmental risks of and ecological degradation from economic activity are mitigated or significantly reduced. Therefore, economic activity is in balance with the long-term capacity of the ocean ecosystems to support this activity and remain healthy and resilient. This book will provide an overview of the various technologies used to promote cross-sectoral and multi-scalar collaboration, facilitate the integrated management of sectors and resources, foster partnerships between governments and industry, encourage R&D in new technologies in resource use and management, and scale-up innovative financing mechanisms in the development of a Blue Economy. Also, the book will contain in-depth case studies that illustrate how locations, of differing climates, lifestyles and income levels, have implemented technologies to facilitate the development of the Blue Economy. Developing the Blue Economy will provide an accessible resource for practitioners and researchers working in the field on the various innovative technologies being implemented around the world to create a Blue Economy.

Book Towards Coastal Resilience and Sustainability

Download or read book Towards Coastal Resilience and Sustainability written by C. Patrick Heidkamp and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-09-28 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coastal zones represent a frontline in the battle for sustainability, as coastal communities face unprecedented economic challenges. Coastal ecosystems are subject to overuse, loss of resilience and increased vulnerability. This book aims to interrogate the multi- scalar complexities in creating a more sustainable coastal zone. Sustainability transitions are geographical processes, which happen in situated, particular places. However, much contemporary discussion of transition is either aspatial or based on implicit assumptions about spatial homogeneity. This book addresses these limitations through an examination of socio- technological transitions with an explicitly spatial focus in the context of the coastal zone. The book begins by focusing on theoretical understandings of transition processes specific to the coastal zone and includes detailed empirical case studies. The second half of the book appraises governance initiatives in coastal zones and their efficacy. The authors conclude with an implicit theme of social and environmental justice in coastal sustainability transitions. Research will be of interest to practitioners, academics and decision- makers active in the sphere of coastal sustainability. The multi- disciplinary nature encourages accessibility for individuals working in the fields of Economic Geography, Regional Development, Public Policy and Planning, Environmental Studies, Social Geography and Sociology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wide- scale chemical monitoring programmes are required by international conventions and European Union policies such as the Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC) and the new EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD). This entails all waters, including transitional and coastal waters, sediments and biota. The final volume in the Water Quality Measurement Serieshighlights policy frameworks and analytical trends with an emphasis on laboratory methods and quality control. Within this comprehensive text, the following sections are included: Setting the Scene; monitoring of pollutants Policy Settings; international conventions and EU marine strategy Marine monitored parameters; trace elements, chemical species, organic micropollutants, and nutrients Types of monitoring; classical chemical monitoring, biomonitoring and in-situ methods Quality assurance; certified reference materials for marine monitoring Research and developments; the role of sediments in coastal monitoring, and passive sampling technologies Chemical Marine Monitoring: Policy Framework and Analytical Trends is intended for postgraduates and researchers working in analytical chemistry and its application to environmental and health analyses. Those interested in developing new methods and materials in relation to drinking water regulations with also find this book beneficial.

Book Managing Troubled Waters

Download or read book Managing Troubled Waters written by Division on Engineering and Physical Sciences and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1990-01-01 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reports of closed beaches, restricted shellfish beds, oil spills, and ailing fisheries are some of the recent evidence that our marine environment is in trouble. More than $133 million is spent on marine environmental monitoring annually in the United States, but officials still do not have enough accurate information to make timely decisions about protecting our waters. This book presents the first comprehensive overview of marine monitoring, providing practical information and a model for revamping the nation's marine monitoring apparatus. The volume explores current monitoring programs and whether or not they work; the benefits and limitations of monitoring; the critical need for greater coordination among local, regional, and national monitoring programs; and a recommended conceptual model for developing more effective monitoring programs.

Book Monitoring Research and Management

Download or read book Monitoring Research and Management written by Joel Sturges O'Connor and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A rationale is presented for making research and monitoring interdependent to maximize the contributions of both activities to environmental management. Emphasis is placed upon better choices of temporal and spatial scales of marine assessments, thereby improving managerial guidance from monitoring and research. While appropriate scales are functions of particular environmental issues, the most useful scales 'in the mean' appear to be long-term (including truly historical) and regional. The likelihood in the near-term of only limited incremental advances in understanding ecosystem processes, with marginal improvements in predictability, leads to an argument for more emphasis upon the use of managerially helpful, necessarily simple models. One such model is presented, to characterize the geographical prevalence of fin erosion in winter flounder (Pseudopleuronectes americanus), relative to the sources of plausible causes, from Canada to Delaware Bay. Changing emphasis from laboratory bioassays to field population-level effects is an important and essential step toward integrating ecosystem-level knowledge into the managerial and regulatory milieu. It is now possible to quantify the geographic and, at least recent, temporal associations among man's waste sources and some of their biological effects. Further elaboration of source-fate-effects understanding with the help of simple models (for example, indices) is often more useful to managers than is detailed, piecemeal quantification of seemingly intractable ecosystem dynamics"--Abstract.
