Book Monitoring Fatigue Failure of a High Strength Titanium Alloy by Acoustic Emission Techniques

Download or read book Monitoring Fatigue Failure of a High Strength Titanium Alloy by Acoustic Emission Techniques written by Samuel J. Acquaviva and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This effort describes the application of acoustic emission techniques to cyclically loaded specimens in an attempt to detect crack initiation. Both notched and unnotched fatigue specimens were cycled at 30 cps in the low cycle fatigue region, i.e., the stress level in each test was above the endurance limit of the material. Fifteen specimens, both notched (K sub T = 4.0) and unnotched, were tested. Results of the tests on the unnotched specimens indicate acoustic emission signals being recorded 30 to 150 cycles prior to fracture; and the crack initiation and propagation phases appear to be quasi-simultaneous as expected in a high strength material. The tests on the notched specimens indicate acoustic emission signals corresponding to crack initiation being recorded as long as 2500 cycles prior to fracture. As a result of this study, it appears that acoustic emission can be a useful technique for detecting material flaws prior to catastrophic failure. (Author).

Book Acoustic Emission Monitoring of High Temperature Cyclic Oxidation Damage in a Titanium Aluminum Vanadium Alloy

Download or read book Acoustic Emission Monitoring of High Temperature Cyclic Oxidation Damage in a Titanium Aluminum Vanadium Alloy written by JC. Baram and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The feasibility of using acoustic emission techniques to monitor high-temperature thermal cycling oxidation damage in Ti-6Al-4V was studied between 600 and 900°C. Acoustic emission distribution analysis was applied to discriminate between different mechanical processes that lead to spalling of the oxide layers. It has been proven that acoustic emission follows very closely the exact material oxidation damage mechanism. Plastic deformation and partial stress relief in the oxide alloy system give rise to increasing emission of low peak amplitude pulses. Cracking and fracture of the oxide's scale, followed by spalling, produce a high rate of acoustic emission, with an increased fraction of high peak amplitude pulses. Nondestructive monitoring of oxidation damage in Ti-6Al-4V by acoustic emission was shown to be able to predict the onset of catastrophic spalling of the oxide's scale.

Book Acoustic Emission

  • Author : Thomas F. Drouillard
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 1979-03
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 814 pages

Download or read book Acoustic Emission written by Thomas F. Drouillard and published by Springer. This book was released on 1979-03 with total page 814 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this bibliography is to list all of the known literature on acoustic emission in a single volume. The bibliography is intended to serve as a reference to the literature for those interested in the acoustic emission phenomenon, for those engaged in materials research, and for those interested in applying acoustic emission as a nonde structive testing method. It provides an invaluable reference to source materiaf for both undergraduate and graduate students interested in the subjects of acoustic emission, microseismic activity, and nondestructive testing. In addition, it provides a vaIuable desk-top reference for engineers and scientists in the fields of pressure vessel design and maintenance, stress analysis, mechanical engineering, welding engineering, nuclear engineering, metallurgy, and quality control. In compiling the bibliography every effort was made to search the literat ure for all the publications and obtain copies, index them, and publish a complete, com prehensive bibliography of the literature on acoustic emission. This bibliography is the most complete ever published. It includes essentially all of the literature on acoustic emission that has ever been published up through the first quarter of 1977. Publications listed are in the form of technical reports and memoranda, journal articles, technical presentations, proceedings, doctoral, master, and bachelor theses, patents, bound volumes, translations, and newspaper articles. Some references, however, are not technical articles, but consist of editorials or staff-written journal articles which are included because they represent apart of the literature.

This book was released on 2018-10-28 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The application of the acoustic emission (AE) technique to locate and monitor damage growth in titanium matrix composites (TMC) was investigated. Damage growth was studied using several optical techniques including a long focal length, high magnification microscope system with image acquisition capabilities. Fracture surface examinations were conducted using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The AE technique was used to locate damage based on the arrival times of AE events between two sensors. Using model specimens exhibiting a dominant failure mechanism, correlations were established between the observed damage growth mechanisms and the AE results in terms of the events amplitude. These correlations were used to monitor the damage growth process in laminates exhibiting multiple modes of damage. Results revealed that the AE technique is a viable and effective tool to monitor damage growth in TMC. Bakuckas, J. G., Jr. and Prosser, W. H. and Johnson, W. S.
