Book Data Driven Modeling for Additive Manufacturing of Metals

Download or read book Data Driven Modeling for Additive Manufacturing of Metals written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2019-11-09 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Additive manufacturing (AM) is the process in which a three-dimensional object is built by adding subsequent layers of materials. AM enables novel material compositions and shapes, often without the need for specialized tooling. This technology has the potential to revolutionize how mechanical parts are created, tested, and certified. However, successful real-time AM design requires the integration of complex systems and often necessitates expertise across domains. Simulation-based design approaches, such as those applied in engineering product design and material design, have the potential to improve AM predictive modeling capabilities, particularly when combined with existing knowledge of the underlying mechanics. These predictive models have the potential to reduce the cost of and time for concept-to-final-product development and can be used to supplement experimental tests. The National Academies convened a workshop on October 24-26, 2018 to discuss the frontiers of mechanistic data-driven modeling for AM of metals. Topics of discussion included measuring and modeling process monitoring and control, developing models to represent microstructure evolution, alloy design, and part suitability, modeling phases of process and machine design, and accelerating product and process qualification and certification. These topics then led to the assessment of short-, immediate-, and long-term challenges in AM. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.

Book Artificial Neural Networks for Intelligent Manufacturing

Download or read book Artificial Neural Networks for Intelligent Manufacturing written by C.H. Dagli and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The quest for building systems that can function automatically has attracted a lot of attention over the centuries and created continuous research activities. As users of these systems we have never been satisfied, and demand more from the artifacts that are designed and manufactured. The current trend is to build autonomous systems that can adapt to changes in their environment. While there is a lot to be done before we reach this point, it is not possible to separate manufacturing systems from this trend. The desire to achieve fully automated manufacturing systems is here to stay. Manufacturing systems of the twenty-first century will demand more flexibility in product design, process planning, scheduling and process control. This may well be achieved through integrated software and hardware archi tectures that generate current decisions based on information collected from manufacturing systems environment, and execute these decisions by converting them into signals transferred through communication network. Manufacturing technology has not yet reached this state. However, the urge for achieving this goal is transferred into the term 'Intelligent Systems' that we started to use more in late 1980s. Knowledge-based systems, our first efforts in this endeavor, were not sufficient to generate the 'Intelligence' required - our quest still continues. Artificial neural network technology is becoming an integral part of intelligent manufacturing systems and will have a profound impact on the design of autonomous engineering systems over the next few years.

Book Unit Manufacturing Processes

Download or read book Unit Manufacturing Processes written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1995-01-03 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manufacturing, reduced to its simplest form, involves the sequencing of product forms through a number of different processes. Each individual step, known as an unit manufacturing process, can be viewed as the fundamental building block of a nation's manufacturing capability. A committee of the National Research Council has prepared a report to help define national priorities for research in unit processes. It contains an organizing framework for unit process families, criteria for determining the criticality of a process or manufacturing technology, examples of research opportunities, and a prioritized list of enabling technologies that can lead to the manufacture of products of superior quality at competitive costs. The study was performed under the sponsorship of the National Science Foundation and the Defense Department's Manufacturing Technology Program.

Book Design of Clothing Manufacturing Processes

Download or read book Design of Clothing Manufacturing Processes written by Jelka Geršak and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-07-31 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The era of mass manufacturing of clothing and other textile products is coming to an end; what is emerging is a post-industrial production system that is able to achieve the goal of mass-customised, low volume production, where the conventional borders between product design, production and user are beginning to merge. To continue developing knowledge on how to design better products and services, we need to design better clothing manufacturing processes grounded in science, technology, and management to help the clothing industry to compete more effectively. Design of clothing manufacturing processes reviews key issues in the design of more rapid, integrated and flexible clothing manufacturing processes. The eight chapters of the book provide a detailed coverage of the design of clothing manufacturing processes using a systematic approach to planning, scheduling and control. The book starts with an overview of standardised clothing classification systems and terminologies for individual clothing types. Chapter 2 explores the development of standardised sizing systems. Chapter 3 reviews the key issues in the development of a garment collection. Chapters 4 to 7 discuss particular aspects of clothing production, ranging from planning and organization to monitoring and control. Finally, chapter 8 provides an overview of common quality requirements for clothing textile materials.Design of clothing manufacturing processes is intended for R&D managers, researchers, technologists and designers throughout the clothing industry, as well as academic researchers in the field of clothing design, engineering and other aspects of clothing production. Book Manufacturing Process Controls for the Industries of the Future

Download or read book Manufacturing Process Controls for the Industries of the Future written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1998-08-14 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manufacturing process controls include all systems and software that exert control over production processes. Control systems include process sensors, data processing equipment, actuators, networks to connect equipment, and algorithms to relate process variables to product attributes. Since 1995, the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Industrial Technology 's (OIT) program management strategy has reflected its commitment to increasing and documenting the commercial impact of OIT programs. OIT's management strategy for research and development has been in transition from a "technology push" strategy to a "market pull" strategy based on the needs of seven energy-and waste-intensive industries-steel, forest products, glass, metal casting, aluminum, chemicals, and petroleum refining. These industries, designated as Industries of the Future (IOF), are the focus of OIT programs. In 1997, agriculture, specifically renewable bioproducts, was added to the IOF group. The National Research Council Panel on Manufacturing Process Controls is part of the Committee on Industrial Technology Assessments (CITA), which was established to evaluate the OIT program strategy, to provide guidance during the transition to the new IOF strategy, and to assess the effects of the change in program strategy on cross-cutting technology programs, that is, technologies applicable to several of the IOF industries. The panel was established to identify key processes and needs for improved manufacturing control technology, especially the needs common to several IOF industries; identify specific research opportunities for addressing these common industry needs; suggest criteria for identifying and prioritizing research and development (R&D) to improve manufacturing controls technologies; and recommend means for implementing advances in control technologies.
