Book excerpt: Mongolia is a democratic country with a population of around three million, with almost half the country's citizens residing in the capital, Ulaanbaatar. Up until 1990, Mongolia was a communist country and largely supported by the former Soviet Union until the late 1980s. During the thirteenth century, Mongolia's founder, Chinggis Khaan, achieved a stunning feat by conquering most of the known world. Mongolia has a long-standing history of nomadic culture, and even today the rural population still lives a nomadic lifestyle. Stepping onto the Mongolian steppes offers opportunities to explore a unique way of life unlike any other on the planet, ranging from the Darkhad in the north, who practice shamanism and manage flocks of domesticated reindeer, to the sprawling steppes where you'll find friendly nomads who reside in well-kept Gers while maintaining large flocks of livestock. The country is home to several ancient lakes with extraordinarily pure, pristine water, which offers spectacular views and opportunities for recreation. Mongolians have done a tremendous job at preserving their unique nomadic traditional lifestyle, even with the modernization of Ulaanbaatar and explosive economic growth in the past decade. Almost two decades ago, the world discovered the land was extraordinarily rich in minerals such as copper, coal, and even gold. As a result, many international mining companies have made investments in the country, and Mongolia became a large exporter of minerals to the rest of the world. The tourism industry has exploded in the last two decades, given the shift to democracy, globalization, and economic growth. Mongolia has a tremendous amount of land that has been untouched by development or pollution. In some areas, the river and lake water is so pristine and clear that by many standards is considered potable directly from the source.Mongolia is one of the safest destinations in the world and easy for English speaking travelers, as most younger-generation Mongolians are taught English in school. Traditionally, the older generations are fluent in Russian as well but in the major cities a foreigner should not have trouble finding people who speak English. In the larger cities, you will get to experience modern Mongolian culture, exquisite restaurants, and entertaining nightlife. Once outside of the major cities, you will get to experience the magic of the traditional nomadic culture in the countryside.

Book Mongolia Other Places Travel Guide

Download or read book Mongolia Other Places Travel Guide written by Nathan Chamberlain and published by . This book was released on 2012-08-01 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mongolia is an adventurous travel destination. While some luxury accommodations exist in the capital city of Ulaanbaatar (UB) and some tourist hot spots have more Westerner-friendly accommodations, the most interesting experiences are outside the capital, where travelers must be creative, patient, and resourceful. The good news, though, is that your extra work pays off - and this book will serve you well in discovering the real Mongolia. The authors of this book served as Peace Corps volunteers and, combined, lived for over ten years in Mongolia. They lived, worked, and played in local communities all across the sparsely-populated steppe and in the quickly developing urban centers. With the help of local travel experts, host families, fellow travelers, and a national network of expats and locals, they share their distinct perspectives so that you can experience the country as they did - from the inside.

Book excerpt: Mongolia Travel Guide. Touristic Guide. Wonderful nature remains the biggest attraction of this beautiful Asian country horizon-less desserts, green steeps, emerald lakes and picturesque piedmont regions. Every year this beautiful country attracts numerous fans of eco-tourism. The great way to start your exploration of the local culture is to visit the capital of Mongolia, the city of Ulaanbaatar. Your excursion program should definitely include a visit to the ancient Monastery of Gandan (Gandantegchinlen). The monastery is home to a priceless relic one of the tallest statues of Buddha in the world. The height of the Statue is 28 meters; covered with a thin layer of gold, the statue is added to the list of most important religious artefacts in the world. An excursion to the Museum of Natural History will be no less interesting. In this museum one can see skeletons of dinosaurs and other interesting archaeological findings. The grand Desert of Gobi occupies more than a half of the country's territory. The southern part of the desert is traditionally the most famous among tourists. This is where several important archaeological zones are located. Tourists are welcome to stay in a yurt and feel the local lifestyle. However, skeletons of dinosaurs remain the main treasure that is hidden in the sands of Gobi. The first skeleton was discovered yet in 1922 by archaeologists from the United States. Currently, all findings of scientists can be seen in the museum of Ulaanbaatar.
