Download or read book Credit and Community written by Sean O'Connell and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-01-22 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Credit and Community examines the history of consumer credit and debt in working class communities. Concentrating on forms of credit that were traditionally very dependent on personal relationships and social networks, such as mail-order catalogues and co-operatives, it demonstrates how community-based arrangements declined as more impersonal forms of borrowing emerged during the twentieth century. Tallymen and check traders moved into doorstep moneylending during the 1960s, but in subsequent decades the loss of their best working class customers, owing to increased spending power and the emergence of a broader range of credit alternatives, forced them to focus on the 'financially excluded'. This 'sub-prime' market was open for exploitation by unlicensed lenders, and Sean O'Connell offers the first detailed historical investigation of illegal moneylending in the UK, encompassing the 'she usurers' of Edwardian Liverpool and the violent loan sharks of Blair's Britain. O'Connell contrasts such commercial forms of credit with formal and informal co-operative alternatives, such as 'diddlum clubs', 'partners', and mutuality clubs. He provides the first history of the UK credit unions, revealing the importance of Irish and Caribbean immigrant volunteers, and explains the relative failure of the movement compared with Ireland. Drawing on a wide range of neglected sources, including the archives of consumer credit companies, the records of the co-operative and credit union movements, and government papers, Credit and Community makes a strong contribution to historical understandings of credit and debt. Oral history testimony from both sides of the credit divide is used to telling effect, offering key insights into the complex nature of the relationship between borrowers and lenders.

Download or read book Affordable Credit written by Collard, Sharon and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2005-02-09 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The poor pay more for many things but, arguably, it is the extra they pay for credit that puts the greatest strain on their budgets. This report looks beyond the rhetoric that has dominated much of the debate on high-cost credit to examine the scope for widening access to more affordable credit. The report explores what people on low incomes want from a credit source. It also analyses the constraints on lending to poor people. It looks at the scope for reducing the costs of lending and widening access to more affordable credit, and estimates the scale of demand for affordable credit. This report should be read by commercial and not-for-profit lenders, campaigners, policymakers and anyone studying or researching issues around poverty and financial exclusion.
Download or read book Poverty Social Exclusion and Microfinance in Britain written by Ben Rogaly and published by Oxfam. This book was released on 1999 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an analysis of the potential of community-based financial services to reduce poverty and combat social exclusion in Britain. From this base, the authors move to a critical review of the outcomes of microfinance interventions around the world. They consider innovative economic responses to poverty in countries such as Bangladesh and Bolivia. Then drawing on their own research, they set out ways to counter financial exclusion in Britain; how to enable people to build assets and acquire capital, and provide mechanisms for the wealth retention in communities deserted by conventional banks.
Download or read book The Language of Money and Debt written by Annabelle Mooney and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-07-13 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the language that ordinary people employ when discussing money, debt and financial behaviour. It documents and critiques this language from an array of disciplinary perspectives, with chapters on children’s books, government infomercials, television poverty porn, the emotional experience of being indebted, and more. In doing so, it addresses common underlying questions concerning definitions of money and value, and scrutinises how people construct, negotiate and articulate meaning in these domains. This wide-ranging edited collection will be of interest to students and scholars of linguistics, sociology, communication, literature and anthropology.
