  • Author : Peter James Hudson

Download or read book Bankers and Empire written by Peter James Hudson and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2017-04-27 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the end of the nineteenth century until the onset of the Great Depression, Wall Street embarked on a stunning, unprecedented, and often bloody period of international expansion in the Caribbean. A host of financial entities sought to control banking, trade, and finance in the region. In the process, they not only trampled local sovereignty, grappled with domestic banking regulation, and backed US imperialism—but they also set the model for bad behavior by banks, visible still today. In Bankers and Empire, Peter James Hudson tells the provocative story of this period, taking a close look at both the institutions and individuals who defined this era of American capitalism in the West Indies. Whether in Wall Street minstrel shows or in dubious practices across the Caribbean, the behavior of the banks was deeply conditioned by bankers’ racial views and prejudices. Drawing deeply on a broad range of sources, Hudson reveals that the banks’ experimental practices and projects in the Caribbean often led to embarrassing failure, and, eventually, literal erasure from the archives.

Book The Eastern Caribbean Central Bank

Download or read book The Eastern Caribbean Central Bank written by Pablo Druck and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2008-09 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper analyzes the challenges for the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) to be an effective lender of last resort (LOLR) as part of a modern banking crisis resolution framework. The main results from the theoretical model of the ECCB's institutional arrangement are that the majority of currency union members may veto emergency lending in the case of a member-specific shock, as such lending may endanger the stability of the currency board (by lowering the central bank's international reserves, thus raising devaluation risk). However, in the presence of contagion across countries, all currency union members have a vested interest in liquidity supply from the central bank. A key policy recommendation is that currency union members need a stronger fiscal position to continue to access international financial markets and sustain the exchange rate peg.

Book Financial Literacy and Money Script

Download or read book Financial Literacy and Money Script written by Christine Sahadeo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-19 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the financial crisis, everyone is more aware of the need to be financially literate. This book covers a wide range of topics and assures the reader that understanding of one’s money script and more particularly making changes (if necessary) would result in more effective and responsible managing and handling of one’s financial affairs. It is a misnomer that graduates of tertiary education are financially literate or are qualified to make financial decisions. In fact, they are particularly vulnerable in making poor financial decisions as many students do not undertake courses in financial education and they therefore have limited financial knowledge. Training in financial literacy through university-based financial education programs is one method of addressing personal finances and financial stress among students. This book presents the key components of financial education designed to address the growing concerns associated with high levels of debt, abuse of credit cards, home ownership, savings and investments, risk management, and retirement. The chapters on entrepreneurship and business planning provide a roadmap for successful new ventures. The book is an excellent resource for students, those interested in developing or enhancing their understanding of money matters and financial wellbeing, and trainers involved in financial education, counseling, and planning.

Book Optimal Reserves in the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union

Download or read book Optimal Reserves in the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union written by Wendell A. Samuel and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2009-04 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We identify structural breaks in economic growth in 140 countries and use these to define "growth spells: " periods of high growth preceded by an upbreak and ending either with a downbreak or with the end of the sample. Growth spells tend to be shorter in African and Latin American countries than elsewhere. We find that growth duration is positively related to: the degree of equality of the income distribution; democratic institutions; export orientation (with higher propensities to export manufactures, greater openness to FDI, and avoidance of exchange rate overvaluation favorable for duration); and macroeconomic stability (with even moderate instability curtailing growth duration)
